Project details Region: -Anhalt / Client: Bilfinger Berger Umwelt GmbH (On behalf of MDVV c/o LAF SA) Involved Parties: ARE Deutzen GmbH Construction Time: 2010 / 2011 Contract value: 3m EUR

Completed work • Pre-treatment of ca. 60,000 tonnes of materials contaminated with benzene at the soil treatment facility in Deutzen • Thermal treatment and subsequent disposal of excavated material.

Background The site of the former benzene production facility can be found on the north eastern edge of a chemical and industrial park in Zeitz. The facility was 200 x 120 m and was in use until the 1990s after which it was demolished. A very large amount of damage had been done to the soil and groundwater due to the benzene. The remediation work revolved around the removal of saturated and unsaturated soils from the area.

Bilfinger Berger Umwelt GmbH was contracted by MDVV to carry out the remediation work at the site of the former benzene production facility in Zeitz. The focus of the work was to carry out source remediation using rotary drilling systems as well as to dispose of the contaminated soils.

Remediation work Bilfinger Berger Umwelt GmbH planned to decontaminate the soils at the thermal treatment facilities of ARE Deutzen GmbH in Deutzen / Saxony, depending on the determined levels of contamination.

The soil removed from the rotary drilling systems by Bilfinger Berger Spezialtiefbau GmbH was transported in containers to be treated at the facilities of ARE Deutzen GmbH near . This was done using gastight containers, which were transported by road. Between 07/2010 and 08/2011, around 60,000 tonnes of soil were delivered and prepared and this was all treated by the end of 2011.
