YOUTH ACTION FOR CHANGE LAUNCH

DISCUSSION ON: AN INTERGRATED APPROACH TO ECONOMIC CHALLENGES OF WORLD TODAY AIMS TO FOSTER ECONOMIC INTEGRATION AND INCLUSION OF CANADIAN YOUTH THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND LEADERSHIP

MARRIOT DOWNTOWN 525 BAY STREET DECEMBER 7, 2019 Facts about TYAC

Black have contributed greatly to Canada’s heritage and growth ever since the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa. Da Costa’s influence on Canada dates all the way back to the early 1600s. Black Canadians in Canada come from diverse backgrounds and have had vastly different experiences. While some of them can trace their roots in Canada going back many generations, others have only immigrated in recent decades. It would be fair to say that they have had a major impact on the country when it comes to things like development, diversity, our history, and our Canadian identity. According statistics Canada, Toronto has the largest black population in the country with 442,015 individuals making up 36.9% of Canada's black population.

In working with both the United Nations’ initiatives for the International Decade for People of African Descent (an initiative that begun in 2015 and will culminate in 2024) and Black History Month 2020, the Sylvenie Lindor Foundation pleads for more concrete action from all levels of government in addressing issues pertaining to the integration of Canadian black youth. It is also important that these youth are better able to understand how the Canadian justice system works. The Toronto Youth Action for Change (TYAC) aims to reach out to about 2000 Canadian black youth and engage them in actively discovering their identity in the Greater Toronto Area.

Aiming to foster economic integration and social inclusion through entrepreneurship and leadership skills, the TYAC will tackle some challenges faced by Canadian youth in the Queen City. Some of these challenges relate to issues such as the justice system, language barriers, unemployment, and poverty. We all know that Canada prides itself on things like inclusion and diversity where those new to the country are helped to blend in in hopes that eventually they will be made to feel at home. Though it is somewhat unclear exactly why, it needs to be said that this process has been incredibly challenging in the case of youth from minority communities. So far, in our partnership with the government, we have done great work and hope to continue doing so.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the city of Toronto for creating an Anti-Black Racism unit which aims to tackle challenges faced by Afro Canadian Youth in the Queen City. Our Foundation has not yet established a partnership with the city of Toronto and our attempt to do so with the city has been unsuccessuful on many occasions. In commemoration of the International Decade for People of African Descent, we advocate for more funding and programs from the provincial government that allow youth to succeed across the province.

Additionally, our foundation wants to express its gratitude to the Ministry of Canadian Heritage and the Canadian government as a whole for partnering with us and working with us so closely on our TYAC project. The International Decade for People of African Descent which came out of the United Nations is an incredible initiative that we believe in very strongly. Working on this initiative in our home of Canada helps make it a global effort to recognize the contribution of the black community from past to present. We are more than confident that this initiative will continue moving forward in the right direction up until its culmination in 2024. We at Sylvenie Lindor Foundation are doing our part in furthering the initiative and adding to what are already some fantastic efforts.

Lastly, we would like to thank the Ministry of Canadian Heritage for specifically creating a Secretary of Anti-Racism who can devote much of their time to this important undertaking. We aim to work closely with this Secretary and their team in focusing in on the acute issues that we care so much about addressing. This is how change takes place, and we at SLF believe wholeheartedly that change is always possible despite any obstacles. As is often the case, stigma emerges as one of the most fundamental issues. Many people of Africans decent at any age can feel overly stigmatized in Canada and elsewhere in the world. By changing the current stigma, much similar change in other areas can follow. Overall, we want Canadian black youth to be able to successfully coexist with all others in our great country. It is important that this Canadian youth population can feel on the same wavelength as their counterparts in a country that prides itself on multiculturalism and equability.
