Canada’s fertilizer industry is doing everything possible to ensure farmers receive essential fertilizer products in time for spring seeding in April and May, while protecting employees and the public from COVID-19. We know that the situation remains fluid and rapidly changing, but as the government implements new policies it must acknowledge that fertilizer is essential to continued global food security. Like many industries who rely on Canada’s infrastructure system to deliver products, we have felt the impact from recent disruptions. However, we have done well in recovering and generally have normal supplies of fertilizer moving throughout the country. This movement must continue, allowing farmers to position product for spring seeding and ensure additional quantities are available for replenishment throughout the entire planting season. The Canadian supply chain is resilient and can manage through these challenges. However, our industry would be concerned about any restrictive measures that may have unintended consequences on rail, port, and truck service, or imports and operations at agri-retail. Your government must ensure that the Canadian border remains open to the movement of critical goods, like fertilizer, in order for farmers to receive their product and meet their spring seeding requirements. In addition, clarity for agricultural businesses on the Temporary Foreign Worker program will allow industry to appropriately manage its labour force and ensure continued operations.

In May 2015, the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) released its final hearing report, recommending the Kiggavik uranium mine not be approved at this time. AREVA Resources Canada Inc. (AREVA) then wrote to your predecessor, requesting the Minister reject the NIRB recommendation. This was followed by a series of letters – from the Baker Lake Hunters and Trappers Organization (HTO), Kivalliq Wildlife Board, Aqiggiq HTO, Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet, Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board, and Mining Watch Canada – requesting the Minister uphold the NIRB recommendation and reject the Kiggavik proposal. I hope you will carefully consider the facts and arguments presented in the NIRB final hearing report and subsequent correspondence. Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit believes that the public record demonstrates that AREVA’s proposal should not be approved at this time, and that AREVA’s request to overturn the NIRB decision was unfounded and inappropriate. Nunavummiut Makitagunarningit also welcomed the statements made by the Hon. Hunter Tootoo during the election campaign. In an interview with Nunatsiaq News, Mr. Tootoo promised that, under the Liberal Party, it would be “the government that grants the licences, but the communities that grant permission.” The NIRB report and submissions to your predecessor clearly show that the most affected communities have not granted permission for this project to go ahead. The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically reshaped the experience of the 2020-21 internship cohort relative to previous years. Such changes began with a mostly-virtual orientation in September, and continued with remote work in their MP placements, virtual study tours, and Brown-Bag lunches over Zoom. Yet while limiting some aspects of the PIP experience, the pandemic provided opportunities as well. The interns took full advantage of the virtual format to meet with academics, politicians, and other public figures who were inaccessible to previous cohorts relying on in-person meetings. They also learned new skills for online engagement that will serve them well in the hybrid work environment that is emerging as COVID-19 recedes. One thing the pandemic could not change was the steadfast support of the PIP’s various partners. We are greatly indebted to our sponsors who chose to prioritize their contributions to PIPs despite the many pressures they faced. Canada must stand against unsustainable shrimp imports. Why Shrimp Health & Nutrition Only 5% of our food imports are inspected at the border, leaving 95% of imports to enter Canada uninspected3. Unsustainable imported shrimp from countries like Thailand and India were recently sent back for containing Nitrofurans, a carcinogen antibiotic2. But antibiotic- resistant bacteria are making their way to Canada despite 5% being inspected. These bacteria can harbour disease and cause fatal infections2.
