PRE-OPERATION BARIATRIC SURGERY

TWO-WEEK PRE-OP PLAN • This meal plan should be followed for 2 weeks prior to your operation. • The meal plan consists of 4 meal replacements and one solid meal per day (except for the day before surgery). • You may eat your solid food meal at any time of the day. • On the day before your operation, eliminate the solid meal and consume all liquids (5 shakes instead of 4). • Spread out your shakes and one solid food meal evenly throughout the day. • Have your meal or a shake every 3-4 hours. • Take 1 multivitamin daily. Before surgery, any multivitamin is appropriate. After surgery, you will need to follow specific recommendations that will be provided to you. • 64 oz. (8 cups) of calorie-free/very low calorie (less than 5 calories per serving) sugar-free fluids daily. • Avoid caloric beverages including alcohol, juice (even 100% fruit juice), regular soda, Gatorade, and sweet . • Approved beverages include but are not limited to water, broth, decaf coffee, decaf tea, unsweetened decaf iced tea, Propel Zero, and Crystal Light packets. • Do not add fruit or milk to any of the meal replacements. • If you are using powdered shake mix, you should use water to mix your shakes (not milk or juice).

NUTRITION GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING A PROTEIN SHAKE FOR PRE-OP DIET If you would like to use a protein shake that is not on the approved list above, you must make sure that it meets ALL of the following criteria for calories, protein, fat, AND sugar in order to be an approved choice. If a protein shake is too high or low in any of the following categories, it is NOT appropriate for the pre-op diet.

RECIPE IDEAS CROCKPOT SALSA CHICKEN Serving Size: ¾ cup | Makes about 6 servings • Place the 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts in the crockpot and cover with 1 jar of salsa • Cover and on high for 4 hours or low for 6-8 hours • Shred the chicken in the slow cooker and toss with remaining salsa and juices

EASY FAJITA VEGETABLES Serving Size: 1 cup cooked | Makes 2 servings • Chop up 1 cup red bell pepper, 1 cup green bell pepper, 1 cup portabella mushroom, 1 cup yellow onion and place in a skillet with ½ cup water • Next season with 4t chili powder, 2t paprika, 1t onion powder, 1t garlic powder, ½t cayenne pepper, 1t cumin or use your own low-sodium taco seasoning • Cook at medium heat for 10 minutes or until tender

BROILED SALMON WITH ROSEMARY Serving Size: 4 oz • Rinse the 4 oz salmon filet under cool water and pat dry with paper towel • Place fillet on non-stick baking • Combine ½t lemon juice, ½t rosemary, ½ clove garlic, and salt/pepper • Brush mixture on to the fish • Bake at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until salmon is cooked through

EASY GREEN BEANS Serving Size: 1 cup | Makes 4 servings • Add 1 small chopped onion into a non-stick medium size pan • Sauté over medium for about 3 minutes • Next add 1 cup low sodium chicken broth and bring to a boil • Add 1 lb of trimmed green beans • Cover pan and simmer for 8 minutes, or until tender
