THE LIBERATION OF OSLO AND COPENHAGEN: A MIDSHIPMAN'S MEMOIR C.B. Koester Introduction I joined HMS Devonshire, a County-class cruiser in the Home Fleet, on 16 September 1944. For the next nine months we operated out of Scapa Flow, the naval base in the Orkneys north of Scotland which had been home to Jellicoe's Grand Fleet during World War I and harboured the main units of the Home Fleet throughout the second conflict. It was a bleak, uninviting collection of seventy-three islands—at low water—twenty-nine of them inhabited, mainly by fishermen and shepherds. Winters were generally miserable and the opportunities for recreation ashore limited. There was boat-pulling and sailing, weather permitting; an occasional game of field hockey on the naval sports ground; and perhaps a Saturday afternoon concert in the fleet canteen or a "tea dance" at the Wrennery. Otherwise, we entertained ourselves aboard: singsongs in the Gunroom; a Sunday night film in the Wardroom; deck hockey in the Dog Watches; and endless games of "liar's dice." Our operations at sea were more harrowing, but only marginally more exciting, consisting mainly of attacks on German shore installations on the Norwegian coast. We rarely saw the coastline, however, for the strikes were carried out by aircraft flying from the escort carriers in the task force. At the same time, we had to be prepared for whatever counterattack the Germans might mount, and until Tirpitz was finally disabled on 12 November 1944, such a riposte might have been severe. That and the ever-present threat of submarines notwithstanding, for most of us these operations involved a large measure of boredom and discomfort. -

The project is designed to provide significant additional energy interconnection between Ireland, the UK and continental Europe with the aim of delivering increased security of supply, fuel diversity and greater competition. It is also designed to provide additional transmission network capacities, reinforcing the existing electricity grids in south-east Ireland and south Wales. The study area is approximately 160km in length and spans the St George’s Channel, including areas of landfall in Ireland and Wales. Its westernmost section intercepts the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford and the easternmost section incorporates an area of land surrounding Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire. -

The declaration of war in 1939 found the Canadian Army without the establishments or organization necessary to carry out scientific research or technical development. This is readily understandable since up to this time, with a few exceptions1, Canadian commitments had not warranted any independent of warlike stores, but largely for their production as well. -

Case Studies of Mutiny in the Wartime Royal Canadian Navy Bill Rawling One of the characteristics of good leadership is the ability to anticipate trouble and devise solutions before problems become so serious as to imperil a mission. The reverse - refusing to acknowledge pitfalls even when on their very edge - has led to such infamous catastrophes as the raid on Dieppe and the fall of Singapore. Another possible consequence of poorly-informed management is the sudden eruption of mutiny; commanders, especially in wartime, seldom consider the frightening possibility that their soldiers, sailors, or aircrew would simply refuse to perform their duties and hence place a mission - and perhaps their own physical well-being - at substantial risk. Two such cases involved RCN ships in the summer of 1944 and early days of 1945, each of which was temporarily put out of action when a large part of its complement simply put down their tools to engage in what the Congress of Industrial Organizations would have called a "sit-down strike" - what the navy condemned as mutiny. Although the ships in question cannot be named under Canada's Privacy Act, all the details concerning the actions of the mutineers and authorities can be studied in detail to better understand the anatomy of such incidents.1 "Confidence between officers and men," insisted the 1933 Admiralty publication, Mutiny in the Royal Navy, "is of the first importance, and want of confidence lies at the root of discontent. To explain the circumstances when hardship or discomfort has to be faced invites trust and implies it, raising the spirits of the men and putting them on their mettle."2 As we shall see, shipboard mutinies were more likely to be triggered by grievances which individually may have seemed insignificant but which cumulatively could lead to a loss of confidence in command and a breakdown of discipline. -

The “incidents” were the culmination of a series of challenges that the senior staff was already endeavouring to address internally. Media and political attention to the indiscipline, however, brought the minister to insist that there be a public enquiry. -
