Sam McLean Major Research Paper 095708700 Acknowledgements This project is not the paper that I proposed at the beginning of my MA studies. It is, as a result of those studies, much more focused in purpose, conception, and execution. This paper reflects the transition from classic naval historian to cultural historian and is the result of supervision by Professors Roger Sarty, Elizabeth Ewan, George Urbaniak, Geoffrey Hayes and Greta Kroeker. Their combined efforts led me to re-evaluate my historical interests and approach, and helped me to discover the importance of historical complexity as the foundation of understanding. Thanks also to the members of the Canadian Nautical Research Society who responded to my presentation of this paper at the society’s annual conference in June 2010 with helpful comments and recommendations. Finally, thanks again to Professor Roger Sarty for his patience and aid in the final stages of this project. 1 Sam McLean Major Research Paper 095708700 Introduction During the first part of the Second World War, Sir Herbert Richmond, professor at Cambridge University and the leading British naval historian, asserted that old-fashioned historical education of the Royal Navy’s officers had a deleterious effect on the navy’s operational performance. This paper is an examination of the impact of what Richmond called the “Blood and Thunder” school of history on the Royal Navy’s professional culture, and the effects of that culture on tactical decision-making during the period 1939 to 1943. The objective is to gain further insight into the institutional culture of the Royal Navy, greater understanding of how officers made tactical decisions, but most importantly endeavour to test more precisely the linkages between professional culture and decision-making in battle. -

“No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century by Kevin Woodger A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Kevin Woodger 2020 “No Mere Child’s Play”: The Canadian Cadet Movement and the Boy Scouts of Canada in the Twentieth Century Kevin Woodger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto Abstract This dissertation examines the Canadian Cadet Movement and Boy Scouts Association of Canada, seeking to put Canada’s two largest uniformed youth movements for boys into sustained conversation. It does this in order to analyse the ways in which both movements sought to form masculine national and imperial subjects from their adolescent members. Between the end of the First World War and the late 1960s, the Cadets and Scouts shared a number of ideals that formed the basis of their similar, yet distinct, youth training programs. These ideals included loyalty and service, including military service, to the nation and Empire. The men that scouts and cadets were to grow up to become, as far as their adult leaders envisioned, would be disciplined and law-abiding citizens and workers, who would willingly and happily accept their place in Canadian society. However, these adult-led movements were not always successful in their shared mission of turning boys into their ideal-type of men. The active participation and complicity of their teenaged members, as peer leaders, disciplinary subjects, and as recipients of youth training, was central to their success. -

HMCS Haida, Canada’s most famous warship, saw distinguished service with the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II, the Korean conflict and the Cold War. Decommissioned in 1963, she was designated as a national historic site in 1984 because of her role in naval combat and because she is the last of the Tribal class destroyers once used by three navies. THE VISION In 2020, HMCS Haida is managed and pre- sented as a living, operating ship. THE LIBERATION OF OSLO AND COPENHAGEN: A MIDSHIPMAN'S MEMOIR C.B. Koester Introduction I joined HMS Devonshire, a County-class cruiser in the Home Fleet, on 16 September 1944. For the next nine months we operated out of Scapa Flow, the naval base in the Orkneys north of Scotland which had been home to Jellicoe's Grand Fleet during World War I and harboured the main units of the Home Fleet throughout the second conflict. It was a bleak, uninviting collection of seventy-three islands—at low water—twenty-nine of them inhabited, mainly by fishermen and shepherds. Winters were generally miserable and the opportunities for recreation ashore limited. There was boat-pulling and sailing, weather permitting; an occasional game of field hockey on the naval sports ground; and perhaps a Saturday afternoon concert in the fleet canteen or a "tea dance" at the Wrennery. Otherwise, we entertained ourselves aboard: singsongs in the Gunroom; a Sunday night film in the Wardroom; deck hockey in the Dog Watches; and endless games of "liar's dice." Our operations at sea were more harrowing, but only marginally more exciting, consisting mainly of attacks on German shore installations on the Norwegian coast. We rarely saw the coastline, however, for the strikes were carried out by aircraft flying from the escort carriers in the task force. At the same time, we had to be prepared for whatever counterattack the Germans might mount, and until Tirpitz was finally disabled on 12 November 1944, such a riposte might have been severe. That and the ever-present threat of submarines notwithstanding, for most of us these operations involved a large measure of boredom and discomfort. -

THE ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY 1087 each is responsible for anti-submarine operations involving RCN and RCAF forces in his Command. The 20 Naval Divisions of the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve are under the over-all command of the Commanding Officer Naval Divisions, with headquarters at Hamilton, Ont. There are naval staffs in London, England, and Washington, D.C., U.S.A., to maintain liaison with the Royal Navy and the United States Navy. As a result of Canada's NATO commitments, officers of the Royal Canadian Navy serve on the staffs of: the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic, at Norfolk, Va., in the United States; the Commander-in-Chief, Eastern Atlantic Area, at Northwood in Britain; and the Com mander-in-Chief, Western Atlantic Area, at Norfolk, Va. The Flag Officer Atlantic Coast holds the NATO appointment of Commander, Canadian Atlantic Sub-Area. The strength of the RCN on Aug. 31, 1964, was 20,276 officers, men and women in the regular force and 2,875 in the reserve force. Operations at Sea, 1963-64.—During 1963, ships of the RCN spent more than 5,700 days at sea and steamed over 1,000,000 nautical miles on exercises, training exercises, patrols and on passage; naval aviators flew over 5,370,000 nautical miles in 35,600 hours flying and made 3,836 day and night deck landings on board HMCS Bonaventure. HMCS Provider, a 22,000-ton replenishment ship, joined the fleet in September 1963 and, by Sept. 1, 1964, four new Mackenzie class destroyer escorts and one Annapolis class had also joined and one was under construction. -

Second World War Newfoundland Escort Force Remembered in St
SECOND WORLD WAR NEWFOUNDLAND ESCORT FORCE REMEMBERED IN ST. JOHN'S Lieutenant Commander ret'd Pat Jessup Communications and Commemorations HMCS Sackville Seventy-seven years after its establishment, the Newfoundland Escort Force (NEF) was honoured in a special ceremony on September 11 at Government House in St. John's. At the same time a unique international project, thirteen years in the making, was culminated. Since May of 2005 members of HMCS Sackville in Halifax, the Royal Naval Association (RNA) - Londonderry, Northern Ireland (NI) and the Crow's Nest Club in St. John's have joined forces to connect their wartime port cities with specially crafted ships' bells. Most recent was the founding of the Newfoundland Escort Force Bell, the last in the series of three, consecrated last May, at St. Columb's Anglican Cathedral in Londonderry, NI. The three bells commemorate Allied naval and merchant sailors, DEMS gunners, and air personnel who lost their lives between September, 1939 and May, 1945 during the Battle of the Atlantic while safeguarding convoys carrying much-needed supplies from North America to Britain and Russia. In his opening remarks of the NEF Bell presentation ceremony to Her Honour The Honourable Judy Foote, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), emcee LCdr ret'd Jim Reddy, HMCS Sackville's captain, explained the meaning of a bell in the world of sailors, ships and the sea: "As much as a ship can approach being a living thing, the bell could be considered to represent its heart and its soul, and even part of its memory. The bell is engraved with the ship's name.
