1 Learner’s Outcomes

Participants will learn how to:

• connect to your Recordex panel via a cable for a mirroring of your computer’s contents. • utilize Simplicity Xpress to annotate on the desktop and XPress whiteboard. • install the XPress Chrome browser extension. • connect a document and use Simplicity XSight. • use a slate and touch laptop to gain mobility through-out the classroom and encourage collaboration from the students. • use handwriting recognition.

Launch Chrome and click on the menu bar at the right-top of the screen. 1. Select “More Tools” and then “Extensions”. 2. Scroll through the “Extensions” and at the bottom select “ Get more extensions ”. 3. Search for “XPress Chrome” in the Chrome Web Store and select “+Add to Chrome” .

10 Planning Mode ---Creating your Lesson on your Laptop

• On your laptop double-click the “XPress” shortcut. • When you do a blank Xpress screen will appear. • Just like XPress on the panel, you will have 2 toolbars • Annotation tools Click on the desired tool • Presentation tools

• Once you open the workbook you created during planning, you’ll simply proceed through your planned lesson to teach the students about Vertebrates and Invertebrates.

Launch web page: Click on the “Screen ” tool and slide the Opacity slider from the right to the left. You can see items open or your desktop such as a webpage thereby allowing you to annotate on the website. The “Click Through” tool allows you to scroll on the webpage. Screencast-O-Matic (in the Navigation toolbar) – allows you to record in 15 minute increments.

14 Customizing XPress Navigation Toolbar

Click on the “hamburger” tool on the left of the screen. Click on the “Gear” tool. • Under “Screenshots” notice that the default format is “PNG”. • Options include: PNG, JPG, or PDF • Change this to PDF – this will allow your screenshots to be in the .pdf format and you to save your workbook as a .pdf for distribution to students via CANVAS or email. • Under Appearance you may wish to change the following: • Two-sided menu – places the Navigation tools on both sides of the XPress window. • Note: you must exit the program for configuration changes to take effect. 15 Saving an XPress Workbook as a PDF

• With your XPress workbook opened, click on the camera. • Click on #1 to “Capture all the pages”. Image Effects Toolbar Options: Image Effects Toolbar Split Screen – divides the current image into two equal parts. The right side is frozen and the left side remains active. Used to view and compare a live image. Freeze – pauses the preview window. This is a good way to move between objects without having the transition occur on screen. Information & Technology 30 Exercise 1 –––Planning your Lesson

In this exercise, you’re going to create a 5 page lesson using the Xpress application installed on your laptop. Be sure to use the templated created by Innovative Learning to complete the follow-up.

1. Launch XPress 2.5 by double-clicking the shortcut on your desktop. 2. Create your workbook by inserting an textbox, image, website, and/or video file. 3. To insert a page and use the white board to annotate. You may wish to have a white board page with a textbox set of directions for your students. a. Open the “Navigation & Options” tools. b. Click the “ “ to add a second page. Repeat for additional pages.

c. Add your next lesson page of your lesson. 4. Save the file by clicking the and append your last name. The file will be saved at the following path: C:\Users\P000XXXXX\Documents\XPress (Macs: Macintosh HD/Teacher/Documents/XPress). 5. To reorder the pages, click the page until it gets a border and then drag into the desired new location. 6. If you wish to have an original copy and a revised copy with the changes, click the tool. 31 Elements to Include in Your XPress Workbook

PART 1 • Participants will create a standards based interactive learning activity using Xpress workbook that integrates curriculum resources with the Recordex presentation system and software/tools. You will used the template provided for you. • The lesson should consist of at least 5 or more Xpress workbook pages. • Page 1 should include: • Date • Participant’s First and Last Name • Participant’s School • Lesson Title: • Lesson Description: (1 -2 sentences) • Curriculum • Standard Addressed • Rate the lesson utilizing the Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) • Name the workbook • Upload the workbook to CANVAS. PART 2 • After presenting your lesson to your class, record a 1-2 minute video reflection to share the success and challenges of the lesson activity implementation. You can use either Screencast-O-Matic, the built-in camera on your laptop, Movie Maker, or the video creator in CANVAS. • Upload the video to CANVAS. 32 Exercise 2 –––Connecting to the Panel

In this exercise, you’re going to connect your laptop to the panel and open up your lesson for a presentation.

1. Determine the type of connector your laptop has – VGA or HDMI. 2. Plug the cable from the panel into the appropriate laptop connection. 3. Click the source button on the panel and select the matching option to your laptop. 4. You may have to change the laptop display to “Duplicate.” a. For Windows, use the keystroke command “Windows + P.” b. For Macs, go to the Display System Preferences and select “Duplicate.” 5. Your desktop should appear on the panel. 6. Open up a website. 7. Open up Xpress on top of the website. 8. Use the “Opacity” option in the Scene Color tool to view the website that is in the background. Remember the “Click-Through” tool for scrolling through the website.

33 Exercise 3 –––Presenting your Lesson

In this exercise, you’re going to open the lesson you created in Exercise 1.

1. Your laptop should already be connected as in Exercise 2. 2. Launch “XPress” from your laptop. 3. Click on the “Navigation & Options”. a. Click on the tool and navigate to the XPress folder to the file you previously created by clicking on the workbook. b. Proceed with your lesson by annotating on the XPress screen. i. This can be instructor or student led. 4. Open up an image or document from your laptop and extend to full screen. Use an annotation tool to indicate items of interest on your document. 5. You may wish to use Screencast-O-Matic to record parts for absent students. 34 Exercise 4 ––– Using the Simplicity Slate In this exercise, you’re going to practice with the slate in XPress.

1. Your laptop should already be connected as in Exercise 2. 2. Insert the USB hub from the back of the slate into an USB port in the laptop a. Launch XPress with the Slate’s pen. b. With the slate , click the “Pen” tool. i. Annotate on the page in the workbook. c. Click on the “Image” tool. i. Insert an image (.pdf, .png, or .jpg file) into your workbook. ii. Annotate on the image by clicking the “Pen” tool. 3. Explore the convenient shortcut buttons on the edges of the slate: a. My Computer – point and click to open up other applications (PowerPoint, etc.) b. Web Browser – point and click to launch default web browser i. Scroll button to scroll through the web browser c. Volume – adjust the volume

35 Exercise 5 –––Using the Document Camera

In this exercise, you’re going to connect the Simplicity Document Camera to the Recordex panel to show an object or document on the panel.

1. Connect the Simplicity Document Camera to your laptop with the USB cable included with the camera. 2. Launch XSight by double-clicking the shortcut on your laptop’s desktop/taskbar. 3. If the camera is not recognized, click on the “Options” tool and select the Document camera as a “Device”. 4. Place a hard copy or object under the camera to display. a. You may have to flip and/or rotate the image. b. Annotate on the file using the “Pen” tool in the Annotation toolbar in XSight. c. Use the “Spotlight” and “Magnify” tools on the Presentation toolbar in XSight. 5. For those of you who already have an Elmo camera: a. Connect via the VGA cable. b. No software is required to display a document or object.
