The Syart Sorrento Festival, Dedicated to Contemporary Art and Now in Its The SyArt Sorrento Festival, dedicated to contemporary art and now in its fourth edition, presents from July 11th to September 6th forty artists from fourteen countries. The suggestive Sorrento location of Villa Fiorentino welcomes the artists, selected by Dr. Rossella Savarese, curator and gallery owner SyArt, becoming a unique container in which more than a hundred contemporary works of art tell of contamination and exchange between multi-ethnic languages and multiple artistic declinations. Photography, painting, sculpture, installation are contaminated by continuing a metaphysical dialogue inaugurated in the previous edition. The exhibition closes with a Solo Room dedicated to Video Art with a suggestive work by the creative Simone Riccardi. In addition to Italy well represented, the kermesse hosts countries such as Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Russia, Slovenia, Egypt, Turkey, England, Brazil, Peru, Serbia, South Korea and Poland. Interesting is the cultural exchange in the room dedicated to Photography where two Neapolitan artists Nico Vigenti and Federica La Magra meet their Brazilian, Uruguayan and Turkish colleagues. From a ground floor focused on a purely figurative discourse we move along the three exhibition floors and in the eight large rooms where the informal gives way to photography, illustration, body art, rather than sculpture and video art. Important the presence of women also in this edition, most of the works were made specifically for the Festival during the quarantine time and for the first time are presented to the public. Among the themes covered are gender violence, environmental pollution and forced isolation to which we have recently been subjected. As per tradition, during the opening evening, the Arbiter Fata Verde Award is presented, a wooden trophy created by the Sorrento artist Toni Wolfe. The winner has the privilege of creating one of the artistic covers of the well-known Arbiter magazine, which since the very beginning has been accompanying the Festival. It is renewed the realization of side events with well-known car manufacturers, this year BMW and M. Car decide to support the idea SyArt through the exhibition of a car model reinvented by one of the participating artists. Rosaria and Leone Cappiello, creators of the event, were pleased with the renewed possibility of allocating the proceeds collected during the opening night for a charitable purpose. And again a multi-handed and all-female live painting. The curator declares: "Emotionally I give you a structured exhibition path during a period of uncertainties with the awareness that art does not stop continuing its endless dialogue". Among the concomitant events we also remember the donation to the City of Sorrento of the work "Mikado" by Vincenzo Mascia, installed a few steps from the entrance of Villa Fiorentino in Corso Italia and which is part of the Outdoor Museum project realized by the SyArt Gallery of Sorrento and that with each edition expands and structures the dislocation in Sorrento of artistic works.     1910 Brussels International Exhibition Belgium’s 5th such event confirmed her position as a major host of international events. Staged thirteen years after the previous Brussels Expo (5 years after that in Liège), and a year after the London international exhibition at which Belgium had a large pavilion, this fair revealed the government’s heavy commitment to international display. King Albert was patron and le Comte de Smet de Naeyer, minister of finance and public works, oversaw his department’s involvement in its construction. Major participants were France, Holland, UK & Ireland, Russia, Germany, Brazil, Spain & Italy. A pavilion for all other nations was erected, in which they put up stands. In all fewer nations attended than previous exhibitions. The exhibition opened on 23 April and closed during November. Some 13,000,000 people attended but the fair lost some 10,000 BEF. About 9 pm on the evening of Sunday 14 August, a fire broke out, but apart from the animals in the zoo being killed by smoke and heat, nobody was killed, as the public had already gone home. The fire broke out near the central gallery and quickly spread to the British section, the city of Paris pavilion and a French restaurant. After several hours the fire was brought under control, the rest of the site escaping damage. The remaining British industrial exhibits were relocated in the Salle des Fêtes. The fire greatly stimulated people’s curiosity to see the exhibition. The exhibition was sited in the Solbosch park, near the Bois de la Cambre at the outer end of the Avenue Louise in.

She will be sorely missed. Please be sure to read the obituary that our colleague, Barbara Haeger, prepared especially for this issue of the Newsletter. I have recently returned to teaching and administrative duties here at Syracuse University after having enjoyed a sabbatical during the 2005-06 academic year. Despite the added work loads and constraints on my already limited time, this re-entry into academe has been thoroughly enjoyable. Instead of spending the entire year myopically focused on the topic of my own research – Hendrick ter Brugghen – my renewed responsibilities have forced me to think in much broader terms about our discipline, more specifically, about the various fields in which our membership curates, teaches, and writes.
