Proje No: 2931. Çalışmada küçük krallıkların bakış açısından yapılan tarihi rekonstrüksiyonların yanısıra, M.Ö. 2. binyılda süper güçlerin çeşitli politik koşullarda hakimiyet kurma yöntemleri ve buna karşılık tabii krallıkların diplomasi ve manevra yöntemlerinin yüzyıllar içerisindeki benzerlik ve farklılıkları toplu halde ortaya konmuştur. iii Establishing Hittite Hegemony on Syria: Super Powers and Minor States in Ancient Near East in the 2nd Millennium BC. Hasan Peker ABSTRACT Hittite foreign policy is based on its relations with Syria. Syria is also the region where in the 2nd millennium B.C. the most powerful states meet. Apart from the superpowers, namely Egypt, Assyria, Babylon and Mitanni, opposing the Hittite state when trying to rule Syria, minor states in that area play an important role. Hittite, Mesopotamia and Egypt all had contact to Syria in nearly all periods of their histories. From the second half of the 14th century B.C. on the North of the Syrian region was under the rule of the Hittite Empire whereas the South was under the rule of the Egyptian Kingdom. In this work the establishment of the Hittite hegemony in Syria will also be evaluated from the point of view of the other powers. With documents from Boğazköy, Syrian centers, Mesopotamia and Egypt the history of equal empires and those of the subordinate minor states will be reconstructed and the relations between them will be evaluated. Especially in the 2nd millennium B.C. Syria, the economical and cultural centre of the ancient Near East, was a place where many battles, wars, alliances and treaties took place. This paper has the aim to illuminate the political balance and relations of that period and present the points of view of the opposing powers according to written documents. In addition to reconstructing the history of that period from the point of view of the small kingdoms, the paper will give insight into the similarities and differences in the manner of the super powers when gaining rulership under changing political circumstances and that of minor states when using diplomacy and maneuvers in order to oppose the super powers over the centuries. iv Önsöz Hititlerin Suriye üzerindeki hakimiyeti konusunda çalışmanın en büyük zorluğunu, bölgedeki ilişkilere ışık tutan arşivlerin çeşitliliği oluşturmuştur. Dr. Metin Alparslan’a teşekkür borçluyum. Son olarak motivasyonumun ve huzurlu çalışmamın mimarı, hayat arkadaşım, E. Oya Demirci'ye teşekkür ederim. Türk Eskiçağ Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Alman Arkeoloji Enstitüsü ve Akdeniz Medeniyetleri Araştırma Enstitüsü bu çalışmamda büyük katkılar sağlamışlardır. Akdeniz Medeniyetleri Araştırma Enstitüsü’nün burslarıyla çalışmamın özellikle yurtdışı ayaklarını gerçekleştirebildiğim için başta Prof. Dr. Haluk Abbasoğlu olmak üzere, sorumlularına ayrıca müteşekkirim. Vyriešenie achchijavského problému. Nový pohľad na dejiny Sýropalestíny a Anatólie, v dobe bronzovej. Fenomén Porteurs de Torques. Exkurz: Protoindoeurópska problematika & archeogenetika. Pozn. 447 (Prepracované a doplnené vydanie. I. Všeobecné fakty.

Recebido em 30 de setembro de 2016 ORCID: 0000-0003-1193-1321 Aceito em 04 de maio de 2018 Abstract The aim of this paper is to provide an introduction to the study of diplomatic relations in the Ancient Near East, more specifically during the so-called Amarna Age. A field so commonly dismissed among scholars of International Relations, ancient diplomacy can be a fertile ground to understand the birth of pre-modern political contacts and extra-societal issues. In order to explore this topic, I will make use of the Amarna Letters, a collection of tablets, found in the modern city of Tell el-Amarna, that represents one of the first complex diplomatic systems in the world (a system that is subsequent to the Ages of Ebla and Mari). I will also discuss the context of the relationships established and the affairs between the kingdoms of Egypt and Mitanni, using as a case study to demonstrate how the rhetoric and the political arguments were present – and fundamental – to the understanding of diplomacy in Antiquity.

Petrovich Doctor of Philosophy Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto 2016 Abstract After the collapse of the Hittite Empire and most of the power structures in the Levant at the end of the Late Bronze Age, new kingdoms and powerful city-states arose to fill the vacuum over the course of the Iron Age. One new player that surfaced on the regional scene was the Kingdom of Palistin, which was centered at Kunulua, the ancient capital that has been identified positively with the site of Tell Tayinat in the Amuq Valley. The archaeological and epigraphical evidence that has surfaced in recent years has revealed that Palistin was a formidable kingdom, with numerous cities and territories having been enveloped within its orb. Kunulua and its kingdom eventually fell prey to the Neo-Assyrian Empire, which decimated the capital in 738 BC under Tiglath-pileser III. After Kunulua was rebuilt under Neo- Assyrian control, the city served as a provincial capital under Neo-Assyrian administration. Excavations of the 1930s uncovered a palatial district atop the tell, including a temple (Building II) that was adjacent to the main bit hilani palace of the king (Building I).

  • Hanigalbat and the Land Hani
Arnhem (nl) 2015 – 3 Anatolia in the bronze age. © Joost Blasweiler student Leiden University - [email protected] Hanigal9bat and the land Hana. From the annals of Hattusili I we know that in his 3rd year the Hurrian enemy attacked his kingdom. Thanks to the text of Hattusili I (“ruler of Kussara and (who) reign the city of Hattusa”) we can be certain that c. 60 years after the abandonment of the city of Kanesh, Hurrian armies extensively entered the kingdom of Hatti. Remarkable is that Hattusili mentioned that it was not a king or a kingdom who had attacked, but had used an expression “the Hurrian enemy”. Which might point that formerly attacks, raids or wars with Hurrians armies were known by Hattusili king of Kussara. And therefore the threatening expression had arisen in Hittite: “the Hurrian enemy”. Translation of Gary Beckman 2008, The Ancient Near East, editor Mark W. Chavalas, 220. The cuneiform texts of the annal are bilingual: Babylonian and Nesili (Hittite). Note: 16. Babylonian text: ‘the enemy from Ḫanikalbat entered my land’. The Babylonian text of the bilingual is more specific: “the enemy of Ḫanigal9 bat”. Therefore the scholar N.B. Jankowska1 thought that apparently the Hurrian kingdom Hanigalbat had existed probably from an earlier date before the reign of Hattusili i.e. before c. 1650 BC. Normally with the term Mittani one is pointing to the mighty Hurrian kingdom of the 15th century BC 2. Ignace J. Gelb reported 3 on “the dragomans of the Habigalbatian soldiers/workers” in an Old Babylonian tablet of Amisaduqa, who was a contemporary with Hattusili I.

IMPACT OF A MILITARISTIC SOCIETY: A STUDY ON THE HITTITES By Amber N. Hawley Submitted to the Faculty of The Archaeological Studies Program Department of Sociology and Archaeology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science University of Wisconsin – La Crosse 2012 Copyright © 2012 by Amber N. Hawley All rights reserved ii THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF A MILITARISTIC SOCIETY: A STUDY ON THE HITTITES Amber N. Hawley, B.S. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 2012 The purpose of this study is to better understand the relationship between the military, the economy, and the societal collapse of the Hittites, a militaristic society. The Hittite empire suffered from many problems near the end of its existence, but this research supports the idea that the military‟s demand for subsistence goods was too great for the economy to provide. By analyzing historical documentation, many aspects of the Hittite culture can be examined, such as trade networks as well as military campaign reports. The study also looks at the archaeological excavations of Hattusa, the Hittite capital, and Kaman-Kalehöyük, a supply city that would restock the campaigning military. By examining these cities and historical documentation, better understanding of the economy and military will be attained for militaristic societies; and in the case of the Hittites, their relationship to the societal collapse is determined to be strong. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I would like to thank my advisors, Dr. David Anderson and Dr. Mark Chavalas for providing me with feedback throughout my research. I would also like to thank my reading group, which consisted of Mitchell Johnson and Maximilian Pschorr for giving me great advice.

Hayes editors ml"ITfE ADMINISTRATION IN SYRIA IN THE LIGHT OF THE TEXTS FROM UATTUSA, UGARIT AND EMAR Gary M. Beckman Although the Hittite state of the Late Bronze Age always had its roots in central Anatolia,1 it continually sought to expand its hegemony toward the southeast into Syria, where military campaigns would bring it booty in precious metals and other goods available at home only in limited quantities, and where domination would assure the constant flow of such wealth in the fonn of tribute and imposts on the active trade of this crossroads between Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Aegean. Already in the 'seventeenth century, the Hittite kings ~attu§ili I and his adopted son and successor Mur§ili I conquered much of this area, breaking the power of the "Great Kingdom" of ~alab and even reaching distant Babylon, where the dynasty of ~ammurapi was brought to an end by Hittite attack. However, the Hittites were unable to consolidate their dominion over northern Syria and were soon forced back to the north by Hurrian princes, who were active even in eastern Anatolia.2 Practically nothing can be said concerning Hittite administration of Syria in this period, known to Hittitologists as the Old Kingdom. During the following Middle Kingdom (late sixteenth-early fourteenth centuries), Hittite power was largely confined to Anatolia, while northern Syria came under the sway 1 During the past quarter century research in Hittite studies bas proceeded at such a pace that there currently exists no adequate monographic account ofAnatolian history and culture of the second millennium.
