Dear Parishioners,

“Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. (John 18:37)

How do we as Americans understand the kingship of Jesus in our lives? We fought a war to rid ourselves of monarchy. And while there have been some kings and queens who have acted in justice and mercy towards their people, we cannot ignore the image of those who have abused power. Well, the Jesus we honor is not a king who rules through power and force; rather, His authority comes when He is welcomed into the hearts of men and women. Our hearts become the throne of Jesus. It is when Jesus comes into our hearts that we can truly see the way that Christ wants to rule as our King. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus “loves us and has freed us from our sins by His Blood.” He is the one who goes looking for those who are lost, feeling alone, hurt; and when He fi nds them He brings them back to Himself. Th e Messiah is a Shepherd King who suff ered for us. He has come to those whose hearts are fi lled with compassion for those who need Him most.

Th e Gospel, while building on this image, reminds us of another role of Jesus as King of the Universe. Th is universal kingship is that of the voice of truth. At the end of time we will stand before God and give account of our lives. We know that it is faith in Jesus alone that saves us. But proclaiming Jesus as our Lord and Savior demands from us a response. Th at response is how well we have loved. Th e Gospels remind us that whatever we do to those in most need we do for Jesus Himself. So the question posed to us is how open are our lives to those in most need? When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked and comfort those in sorrow, do we see in them the face of Jesus? If we can see in them the face of Jesus, it changes the heart by which we give. We then see and understand that those in need deserve more than “our ” or those things we don’t want or would never wear. Th ey deserve what we would give to Jesus Himself. In embracing this mindset with an open heart, we now have the possibility to off er to those who have been so often “expected” to accept what is second best and return to them their God given dignity. Each act of kindness and mercy we do in the Name of Jesus not only fulfi lls the commands of faith, but also proclaims to the world the King we follow.

Th e “works of faith” are so important to what it means to be a Christian that we are told that at the end of time, Jesus will separate the sheep (those who act in mercy to the needy) from the goats (those who do not). Th e sheep are invited to share the joy of the Father, while the goats…well you know what happens to them! So which group will you be in when Jesus our King comes in glory? Remember, it’s never too late to change and open yourself to the loving Shepherd.

Last Sunday the young people of our parish gathered to make Advent Wreaths for their homes. It was a wonderful and joyous event. I want to thank Michele Bernic and all who assisted her to make it such a faith fi lled and fun experience.

Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. I encourage you to use the four weeks of Advent as a time of deep spiritual preparation for Christmas. Pray each night around your Advent Wreath at home as you light the candles of each week. You can fi nd some great prayers and activities online. Make the memories of our faith for your children at home…you won’t regret it.

You are all invited to bring your family Advent Wreaths to Mass next Sunday and place them in the Sanctuary. As the priest blesses the parish wreath he will also bless those you will use at home.
