Putting forth everything from cult-followed ramen to local wine pairings to homemade ice cream, these spots were such instant hits that it’s difcult to believe Long Island ever existed without them. Wölfer Kitchen s one of the Long Island’s fnest wineries, it’s Aonly natural that Wölfer Estate Vineyard would open a restaurant equally impressive. On Sag Harbor’s Main Street not far from the 175-acre Wölfer estate itself, Wölfer Kitchen opened last year to top-critic reviews praising it for warm, meticulous service, contemporary design that’s smart without being fashy, and consistent excellence throughout the menu, which focuses on seasonal, Mediterranean-infuenced cuisine. Lamb lollipops with salsa verde for dipping, mussels steamed with housemade chorizo in Wölfer rosé, butternut squash ravioli in lemoncello brown butter, and Dayboat stew flled with fresh seafood are standouts worth raising a glass¬ to— preferably one flled with Wölfer’s 2013 Merlot, though the wine list kindly also includes bottles from numerous fellow island vineyards, along with some names from abroad. The staf is happy to make recommendations, but the well-edited and organized list is happily accessible enough for even budding oenophiles to have a stab at choosing for themselves. (29 Main St., Sag Harbor) Saltbox had big shoes to fll when it opened last summer, taking over the space formerly inhabited for 25 years by the beloved O’Murphy’s Pub¬, yet it’s managed not just to slide right into Montauk’s food scene but also to resonate as an instant favorite. Its chef may have something to do with it: Danny Ye, formerly of Manhattan’s ever- popular Nobu and Harlow restaurants.

This land transfer, the party argues, would benefit states “and the nation as a whole,” because “residents of state and local communities know best how to protect the land where they work and live.” It is unclear how the transfer of public lands would benefit the entire country, but it seems to me that such a transfer on any scale would change the character of the American West. Given that, and given that the GOP holds the Oval Office and both chambers of Congress, the so-called “land-transfer movement” is worthy The not-so-grand entrance to Little Missouri State Park in North Dakota, where a saltwater disposal facility of a hard look. • Back to School Lunches and Snacks
Back To School Lunches and Snacks The fall is a busy time of year. When it comes to what you will pack in your child's lunch, packaged or convenience foods may seem like the best choice when you are in a rush. However, foods like soda, chips, cookies and high fat lunchmeats (salami, bologna) have too much fat, sugar, sodium, and total calories. Over time, eating these foods frequently can lead to long-term health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. Extra calories and sugar can also cause children to feel sluggish or cranky in the afternoon while children who eat more nutritious foods tend to do better in school. Help them reach their full potential by packing them a good old-fashioned "brown bag" lunch that includes a variety of foods from different food groups to help provide them with the energy and nutrients they need to grow, play, learn, and stay healthy. To make a lunchbox lunch more appealing for your children, let them help select and prepare their meals. This way, they are more likely to eat their lunch because they feel invested in the process. A bonus for you as the parent is that if your child is involved in the food prep, they can help you clean it up as well. For example, let your children shop for, clean, peel, and/or cut up fruits and veggies (if they are old enough). Let them select the dinner vegetable and then pack the leftovers in their lunch box for the next day. Basics of a Healthy Lunch Box: In every lunch, try to include..

Yvon Wang University of Toronto [email protected] Abstract This article is an exploration of media and gender in urban and peri-urban China dur- ing the 1950s and early 1960s – specifically, the persistent trope of the “hooligan,” or liumang. Since at least the late imperial period, Chinese authorities had feared unmar- ried, impoverished, rootless men as the main source of crime, disorder, and outright rebellion. Yet such figures were simultaneously celebrated as knights-errant for their violent heroism in cultural works of enormous popularity across regions and classes. As the ruling Chinese Communist Party attempted to reshape society and culture after 1949, it condemned knight-errant tales and made hooliganism a crime. At the same time, the state tried to promote a new pantheon of vigilante-like men in the guise of revolutionary heroes. But the state’s control over deeply rooted cultural markets and their products was incomplete. Moreover, the same potent tools that had empowered the Party, in particular its rhetoric of revolutionary subjectivity and its harnessing of modern media technologies, were open as never before to being adopted by the very targets of its efforts at control and censure.

  • Leftovers and Food Safety Often When We Cook at Home Or Eat in a Restaurant, We Have Leftovers
Leftovers and Food Safety Often when we cook at home or eat in a restaurant, we have leftovers. To ensure that leftovers are safe to eat, make sure the food is cooked to a safe temperature and refrigerate the leftovers promptly. Not cooking food to a safe temperature and leaving food out at an unsafe temperature are the two main causes of foodborne illness. Safe handling of leftovers is very important to reducing foodborne illness. Follow the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service's recommendations for handling leftovers safely. Cook Food Safely at Home Keep Food out of the &quotDanger Zone&quot Cool Food Rapidly Wrap Leftovers Well Store Leftovers Safely Thaw Frozen Leftovers Safely Reheating Leftovers without Thawing Reheat Leftovers Safely Refreezing Previously Frozen Leftovers Cook Food Safely at Home The first step in having safe leftovers is cooking the food safely. Use a food thermometer to make sure that the food is cooked to a safe, minimum internal temperature. Red meats: Cook all raw beef, pork, lamb and veal steaks, chops, and roasts to a minimum internal temperature of 145° F as measured with a food thermometer before removing meat from the heat source. For safety and quality, allow meat to rest for at least three minutes before carving or consuming. For reasons of personal preference, consumers may choose to cook meat to higher temperatures. Ground meats: Cook all raw ground beef, pork, lamb, and veal to an internal temperature of 160° F as measured with a food thermometer. Poultry: Cook all poultry to an internal temperature of 165° F as measured with a food thermometer.

  • Beth's Annotated Coastal-Hiking Personal Packing List
Pack light. Stay dry. Hike safe. Beth’s annotated coastal-hiking personal packing list Rather than tell you what you should take on a trip, the following list tells you what I take on a trip. It also explains reasons why I take what I take, noting options and alternatives I’ve tried. The list should give you a good idea of what is needed, but it is important to recognize that final details are personal. The list includes all personal gear I take on a coastal hike as well as a few of the items that I carry because I am a guide, some of which you might consider as optional items. I begin with a few general pointers. Weight : One of the nicest things you can do for yourself is lighten your pack before you even leave on the hike. (The other thing is train, but we can get into that elsewhere...) Every single piece of clothing, equipment, packing material and container you stuff into your pack will be hoisted onto your shoulders and cling to your back for the length of your trip: up and over logs, scrambling across boulders, walking along amazing beaches... Your pack and its contents will be your best friend, but can also be your biggest adversary. Weight is a dominant factor in the distinction. Of course having the right stuff is another one. There are always trade-offs: Consider them carefully as you pack. (The total weight of everything listed here is about 13.5kg/30 pounds (including pack, boots, poles, etc.).
