Whether it’s lifelong friends among our “sandbox kids” or meaningful mentorship from a caring faculty member, it is the people of the St. Anne’s-Belfield community who bring energy and enthusiasm to each of our days. When I think of our Annual Fund, it is this vibrant community that comes to mind. At its most basic level, our Annual Fund is people helping people, a shining example of our community coming together to “close the gap” between what a School education costs per student and what is covered by tuition payments. Last year, with the support of our community members who raised $1.4 million, we were able to provide each Maria Gall with daughters Leah Gall '31 and Ali student with a personalized educational experience, one that our faculty and staff members are proud to Gall '34. provide, our parents treasure for their families, and our alumni so often credit as the foundation of their career and personal successes. This issue of Impact once again celebrates our Annual Fund, while highlighting other philanthropic achievements. I hope the pride I feel in our community as both an administrator and parent of two young students is shared by all who have helped to create and sustain such a wonderful School. Together, our 2017 – 2018 fundraising efforts supported activities in our classrooms and auditoriums, on our courts, fields, and stages, and even took our students across the world on summer international travel. Truly, each of you who has contributed, especially our many volunteers who donated countless hours of time and talent, has been a real difference maker in the educational experiences of our students. For this and so much more, we thank you. Imel A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages & Literatures and Medieval Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mairi McLaughlin, Chair Professor Richard Kern Professor Lev Michael Professor Bryan Donaldson, UCSC Summer 2019 Sa nature proveir se volt: A New Examination of Leftward Stylistic Displacement in Medieval French through Textual Domain, Information Structure, and Oral Représenté © 2019 Brock A. Imel Abstract Sa nature proveir se volt: A New Examination of Leftward Stylistic Displacement in Medieval French through Textual Domain, Information Structure, and Oral Représenté by Brock A. Imel Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages & Literatures and Medieval Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Mairi McLaughlin, Chair ・・・ Among all the studies performed on medieval French syntax during the last decade, one construction in particular, variously known in the literature as “stylistic fronting” or “leftward stylistic displacement”, has provoked particularly lively debate. Atheoretically conceived, this construction is characterized by the presence of non-subject constituents to the left of the finite verb, such as adjectives, adverbs, nouns, infinitives, past participles, and prepositional phrases. One or more such elements may appear in both main and subordinate clauses, either to the left or to the right of the subject, when the subject is expressed. Originally at the heart of this debate was the apparent similarity between the medieval French construction and one found in contemporary and historical Scandinavian languages (Holmberg 2000; Hrafnbjargarson 2004).

Mahaiko kideak jabetzen ziren, ger- tatutakoaren memoria lantzeak, hau da, jasandako giza eskubide urraketa larriei eta sufrimenduei erreparatzeak, gaur egun oraindik oso bizirik diren zauriak eta zenbaite- tan ukatuak edo isilduak izandako sufrimenduak izendatzea suposatzen zuela. Bai eta egindako lanak, bizikidetzaren berreraikuntzari ekarpen bat egin ziezaion iraganarekiko begiradaren inguruko kontsentsua ezinbestekoa zela ere jabetzen ziren. Azkenean eta hilabeteetako elkarrizketa sakonen ondoren —non Argituz eta Intxorta 1937 Elkarteko adituen aholkularitza nahitaezkoa bilakatu den— , memoria parteka- tua eraikitzeko beharrezkoak ziren oinarrizko kontsentsuak lortzea posible izan da. Aurkezten diren liburuetan jasota gelditu den memoria alegia. Bide honi ekiteak elkarren arteko eskuzabaltasun ariketa bat suposatu du, non bakoitzak izan ditzakeen iraga- narekiko irakurketa desberdinetatik harago, bizikidetzaren bideari ekiteko beharrezko akordioa lehenetsi egin da. Guzti honek fokua irekitzea suposatu du, gureak bezala bizitu izan ditugun sufrimen- duez harago jo eta urrunago sentitu ahal izan ditugun horiengana hurbilduz.
