    Some Practicalities for the Hands-on Training in Neutron Scattering Practicum 1: Imaging and Reflectometry Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland 24-30th September 2017 Introduction As a part of the general training in fundamental neutron scattering all SwedNess PhD students should pass the mandatory “Introductory Course in Neutron Scattering” (8 ECTS). Such course is divided into two sections: Lectures and Exercises (4 ECTS): Two weeks summerschool in Tartu, Estonia. Hands-on training (4 ECTS): practicums performed at three neutron sources in Europe. This document deals with the first practicum of the hands-on training, which will be performed at the Swiss spallation neutron source (SINQ) of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. This training will take place 25-30th September 2017 (see below for more detailed program) and focuses on neutron imaging and reflectometry. In addition to PSI there will be two other subsequent practicum: 2. IFE Kjeller in Norway, 27th November – 1st December 2017 Neutron diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) 3.     Extreme flood events on the River Aare 1 Key findings and results of the EXAR project Extreme flood events on the River Aare Key findings and results of the EXAR project 2 Extreme flood events on the River Aare Key findings and results of the EXAR project Contents 4 The EXAR project provides an important basis for decision-making in order to better protect the population and key infrastructure on the River Aare from flooding in the future. 7 By combining different models and simulation programs, the ex- perts were able to determine the peak discharges of the Aare over a period of almost 300,000 years. 10 Because of the much longer time horizon, the flood peaks on the Aare can be significantly higher than previously expected in the case of extremely rare events. For example, upstream of the point where it joins the Rhine, discharge values of over 7,000 cubic metres per second are possible, around 12 times the average discharge. 14 In the drainage basin, there are six key sites capable of influencing the flow behaviour of the Aare supra-regionally. Highly unlikely dam failures could flood large areas of the Seeland with several metres of water. 19 EXAR provides detailed hazard assessments for five locations, including the sites of the nuclear power plants on the Aare. They show that flooding is possible, especially in the case of structural failures and blockages by large wood. 28 The expert assessments, calculations and simulations of natural processes and technical structural failures are subject to uncertain- ties. Although only an approximation to real events is possible, EXAR will help to improve the assessment of flood hazard on the Aare.
