Some Practicalities for the Hands-on Training in Scattering Practicum 1: Imaging and Reflectometry

Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), 24-30th September 2017

Introduction As a part of the general training in fundamental all SwedNess PhD students should pass the mandatory “Introductory Course in Neutron Scattering” (8 ECTS). Such course is divided into two sections:

 Lectures and Exercises (4 ECTS): Two weeks summerschool in Tartu, Estonia.  Hands-on training (4 ECTS): practicums performed at three neutron sources in Europe.

This document deals with the first practicum of the hands-on training, which will be performed at the Swiss (SINQ) of the Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. This training will take place 25-30th September 2017 (see below for more detailed program) and focuses on neutron imaging and reflectometry. In addition to PSI there will be two other subsequent practicum:

2. IFE Kjeller in Norway, 27th November – 1st December 2017 and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS)

3. ISIS Neutron source, UK, 11-15th December 2017 Neutron spectroscopy / Inelastic neutron scattering (INS)

About PSI The PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland, conducting cutting-edge research in three main fields: matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. PSI develops, builds and operates complex large research facilities. Every year, more than 2500 scientists from Switzerland and around the world come to PSI to use our unique facilities to carry out experiments that are not possible anywhere else. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are apprentices, post-graduates or post-docs.

PSI employs 2000 people, with an annual budget of approximately CHF 370 million, and is primarily financed by the Swiss Confederation. PSI is part of the ETH Domain, with the other members being the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology, ETH and EPFL , as well as Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology), Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science & Technology) and WSL (Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research). The Paul Scherrer Institute is located in the Canton of , in the municipal areas of and Würenlingen on both sides of the River .

Overview of the Program:

 Hands-on training in  Hands-on training in neutron imaging

 Study visit of the Swiss spallation neutron source (SINQ)  Study visit of the Swiss source (SS)  Study visit of the (SLS)  Study visit of the Swiss Free-electron Laser (SwissFEL)  Interaction with local PSI PhD students (26 September from 18:00)  Scientific seminars by neutron scientists at PSI (optional)

Location: Paul Scherrer Institut PSI, 5232 Villigen, Switzerland ( https://www.psi.ch/ ) Start: 25 September 2017 at 08:00 End: 30 September 2018 at 13:00

Things to do before going to PSI ( https://www.psi.ch/ ), Point 1 & 2 as soon as possible:

1. Create an account in the PSI Digital User Office (DUO) at https://duo.psi.ch/duo/

2. Register for the hands-on training at: https://goo.gl/forms/WzlvGo8EN2CeVTUr2

3. Pass the radiation safety test. Download the following file and follow the instructions https://www.psi.ch/bz/ServicesDE/2015_RadiationProtectionandSafety_ENGL.ppsx (do not forget to print/sign the document at the end of the test and bring it to PSI).

4. Book your accommodation, here are some options (if you need more contact Martin Månsson):  You can try to use the PSI guesthouse (but it is usually fully booked). Go to: https://www.psi.ch/gaestehaus/registration-form Here the “PSI Project” should be “SwedNess neutron training” and “Local Contact” is “Thomas Geue”  Restaurant & Hotel Hirschen, http://www.hirschen-villigen.ch/ which you can book through www.booking.se  Schloss Böttstein, http://www.schlossboettstein.ch/ , which you can book through www.booking.se  Hotel Restaurant zum Sternen in Würenlingen, http://www.sternen-wuerenlingen.ch/ which you book directly through their webpage or by phone.  Hotel Gasthaus Hirschen in Kirchdorf, http://www.hirschen-kirchdorf.ch/ which you can book through www.booking.se

If all of these are fully booked you could look for hotels in preferentially Brugg, Aargau, Schweiz (easy access to PSI by direct bus) or Baden, Aargau, Schweiz (train to Brugg and then bus to PSI).

5. Plan your travel to PSI, see https://www.psi.ch/visit/how-to-find-us for details.

6. Make sure you bring some cash money (Swiss Franc, CHF)

7. Please note that you probably need an adapter for the power-plug in Switzerland !

General Info for Hands-on Training

The hands-on training follows the spread-sheet below. Check your own personal schedule and note that some groups have to be different for the reflectometry and imaging since the number of available places are different.

5 minutes before the start of the hands-on training (i.e either 08:30 or 14:00) you will meet up with the local contacts outside SINQ entrance (see map below). Your local contacts will be one of the following:

Gunnar Palsson Max Wolff Jochen Stahn Thomas Geue Reflectometry Reflectometry Reflectometry Reflectometry (Main Support Exp.) (Main Support Analysis) (PSI expert) (PSI expert)

Martin Månsson Anders Kaestner Peter Vontobel Erika Tudisco “PSI Guru” Imaging Imaging Imaging +46 – 73 – 765 2130 (PSI Local Contact) (PSI Local Contact) (SwedNess Support)

For the data-analysis we have allocated at least 10 desks in the WBWB building (see map below) that will be available during the entire week. You are of course free to sit anywhere you want or make individual plans with your local contacts. For the reflectometry, there will be someone in WBWB during the specified times according to the spread-sheet (so basically the entire week).

Hands-on Summary/presentations This day we all meet and summarize the hands-on training results. In order to pass this part of the course you are requested to do the following:

1. Hand in the short report including the specifics mentioned in the hands-on description “Protocol”. This should be done both for the Imaging and Reflectometry exercise. One report per group is enough (so please specify clearly the persons involved in each report)

2. Make a 5 minutes individual (not in groups) presentation where you present what you think you learned from the hands-on training (if anything) and, more importantly, how you think you can use neutron reflectometry and neutron imaging in your own PhD project. If you do not think one or both of the techniques are useful, then explain why!

Sightseeing

All of you will have some free time during this week and since Switzerland is rather small there is a possibility to do a lot of things even for a day tour. You can all google things for sure but just a few suggestions:

1. Visit of Rigi Kulm (mountain top): It will take you about 2.5 hours with bus, train and cogwheel train (put “Rigi Kulm” as end-station into the www.sbb.ch system) to go there (and another 2.5 hours back). Cost of tickets will be approximately CHF 40 in total. If the weather is nice then you will have a very nice view and you can have a good lunch up on the top (1797 m). More information here: https://www.rigi.ch/en/Places/Rigi-Kulm

2. Visit of Mount Pilatus: Another very nice mountain top that you reach by bus, train and cable-cart, approximately 2.5 hours from PSI. Total cost will be approximately CHF 80 (due to the cable-cart). If the weather is nice then you will have a very nice view and you can have a good lunch up on the top (2132 m). More information here: https://www.pilatus.ch/en

3. Visit of Zurich: Takes you about 40 minutes by bus and train. In Zürich, you have a wide selection of museums, shopping etc. Have a look at the local tourist information: https://www.zuerich.com/en I would recommend at least a visit to the Läderach chocolate store on Bahnhofstrasse 106:

4. Visit of the Einstein museum in : The name says it all. Go to the homepage of the museum for more information: http://www.bhm.ch/en/exhibitions/einstein-museum/
