Sept. 2 The Spartans, ranked preseason No. 20, begin the season by winning the Sixth Annual L&L/MSU Classic; Jessica Sanborn named MVP and Amy Sibbernsen and Christie Landry named all-tournament. Northeastern scored just 12 points against the Spartans, tied for sixth-fewest point allowed in MSU’s 28-year history. Sept. 10 MSU finishes third at the adidas/Notre Dame Invitational, losing to No. 3 UCLA and No. 4 Nebraska, but defeating No. 22 Notre Dame; Jessica Sanborn named all-tournament. Sept. 16 State wins the San Diego Invitational; Sarah Gustin named MVP and Jessica Sanborn all-tournament. The Spartans hit .460 vs. Georgetown, the fifth-best three-game hitting percentage in school history. Sept. 18 Sarah Gustin is named the Big Ten Player of the Week after winning the tournament MVP and recording 59 kills (.432), while adding 10 blocks and 2.3 digs per game. Sept. 20 MSU defeats No. 21 Michigan in its Big Ten opener, 3-2; Christie Landry tallies her first career triple-double with 11 kills, 48 assists and 14 digs. It is the first triple-double at MSU since 1996 and the first-ever for a Michigan State setter. Sept. 29 Sarah Gustin records her 1,000th career kill, the 10th Spartan in history to reach the mark. Sept. 30 Erin Hartley notches her first career triple-double with 18 kills, 11 digs and 10 blocks as Michigan State defeats Illinois 3-2, raising its record to 3-0 in five-game matches. MSU hit .335 against Illinois, the third-best team hitting percentage in a five-game match in team history. The win also raised MSU’s record to 7-1 on Saturdays. Oct. 13 Jenny Rood steps into the starting lineup against Wisconsin, notching 16 kills, 18 digs and two block solos. She would start the rest of MSU’s matches for the season. Oct. 14 Starting middle Jessica Sanborn is lost for the season with a broken foot. Christie Landry tallies her 3,000th career assist, just the third Spartan setter to reach the mark. Oct. 17 Back row specialist Lisa Ashton records a career-high 15 digs in MSU’s three-game win over Indiana. Oct. 28 Middle Angela Morley blocks her way onto MSU’s top 10 list with her 219th block assist and 262nd career block. Nov. 3 After missing two weeks with a sprained foot, Sarah Gustin returns in MSU’s 2-3 loss to Illinois, leading the team with a season-high 24 kills. The Spartans hit .324 against the Illini, the fifth-best five-game hitting percentage in school history, but lose. The 50 points Illinois tallied against MSU was the sixth-fewest points State has ever allowed in a five-game match. And, in game four, MSU beat the Illini 15-1, the 27th time in history the Spartans have held an opponent to just one point. Nov. 4 Angela Morley gets a season-high 10 blocks in MSU’s 3-1 win over Purdue. Nov. 8 MSU loses to Michigan, 2-3, but wins back the State Pride Flag on the basis of points 128-120 since both teams won a match and each team won five games. Nov. 11 Erin Hartley tagged her 1,000th career kill in MSU’s 3-1 upset over No. 13 Ohio State. The outside hitter is the 11th Spartan in history to reach the mark. The win was just the third over a ranked team for MSU all season. Sarah Gustin moves back to the middle hitter position and records 20 kills, 12 digs and six blocks. Nov. 13 Michigan State falls out of the AVCA/USA Today top 25 for the first time all season. Nov. 17 Michigan State defeats Iowa, 3-0, and sets the school three-game match record for block assists (34) and total blocks (18). The block assists mark is third best all-time, regardless of length of match. Nov. 18 The Spartans nearly escape No. 8 Minnesota with an upset but are beaten by the serve of the Gophers’ Lindsey Berg. Nov. 25 MSU ends its regular season with a 0-3 loss to No. 5 Wisconsin. The Spartans honor their four seniors: Vicki Basil, Sarah Gustin, Christie Landry and Jessica Sanborn. Nov. 26 Christie Landry is named team MVP at the annual banquet. Lisa Ashton earns the Spirit Award, Jessica Sanborn the hitting efficiency award (.420) and Sarah Gustin the team GPA award (3.74, communication). Michigan State earns its seventh-consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament, all under eighth-year head coach Chuck Erbe. The Spartans will play Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Dec. 2 in Los Angeles, Calif.

1998 marked the third time in four years that the Spartans hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Michigan State was caught off guard by a hot Pepperdine team and run out of the tournament in the first round in a 2-3 loss.

In 1999 Michigan State was one of eight Big Ten teams to gain entry into the NCAA Tournament, making it as an at-large bid. The Spartans traveled to Malibu, Calif., defeating Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the first round, 3-1, but falling for the second consecutive year to Pepperdine, 1-3.

In just his third season at the helm of the MSU program, Erbe delivered on his promise of a title, leading the Spartans to their first-ever Big Ten champion- ship in 1995 (19-1 record). Not only did the Spartans take the Big Ten Conference by storm, but they came to the forefront on the national scene as well, earning their first-ever national ranking and climbing as high as No. 3 in the polls. In just its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, MSU defeated previously unbeaten Hawaii before 10,000 fans in Honolulu in the Mountain Region final. The come-from-behind five-game victory propelled the Spartans into the national semifinals and the national limelight. Todd Dagenais Erbe was recognized by his peers for his efforts in revitalizing the Spar- tan program, earning 1995 Big Ten, AVCA District 2 and AVCA National Coach of the Year honors. In addition, he was tabbed as the Volleyball Magazine National Coach of the Year. Several Spartans also reaped the rewards of success. Dana Cooke, Val Sterk and Jenna Wrobel were named to the First-Team All-Big Ten squad, with Wrobel being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earning a spot on Volleyball Magazine’s Freshman All-America squad. Cooke, Courtney DeBolt and Sterk also earned the distinction of becoming MSU’s first-ever All-Americans. Jenna Wrobel joined the elite club in 1998. Sterk is currently playing on the USA National Team. The success of the Spartan volleyball program has not gone unnoticed as Erbe has helped turn the East Lansing area into a volleyball-crazed city.
