Mazza, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation examines the citational use of the Judeo-Christian Bible in two sociopolitical debates within the United States: first, the debate over the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century, and second, the contemporary debate over gay rights. This study incorporates two core theses. First, I argue that the contemporary religious right, in its anti-gay use of the Bible, is replicating the hermeneutical practices used by opponents of the abolitionist movement. My second thesis parallels the first: I argue that the contemporary activists who reclaim the Bible as a pro-gay instrument are standing in the same hermeneutical tradition as nineteenth-century Christian abolitionists.

  • Accelerating Acceptance 2016
Accelerating Acceptance 2016 A Harris Poll survey of Americans’ acceptance of LGBT people 1 GLAAD’s“ findings point to a culture of Accelerating complacency, wherein Acceptance 2016 the non-LGBT public is under the false and Introduction potentially dangerous 2015 represented an especially historic year in the movement impression that for LGBT equality, with the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed same-sex couples the right the work for LGBT to marry nationwide. Notwithstanding the American public has grown well beyond majority status in support for marriage equality equality is done. and we have reached what TIME Magazine called the “transgender tipping point,” GLAAD’s recent survey results, conducted by Harris Poll, reveal that other key, yet perhaps more nuanced attitudes about LGBT people are lagging and the cause of Accelerating “ Acceptance in 2016 and beyond must continue. With the monumental progress achieved for marriage equality also comes a misperception that LGBT people are now fully equal in the eyes of the law. For example, half of non-LGBT Americans (50%) currently believe that “gay people have the same rights as everybody else,” GLAAD’s survey reveals. GLAAD’s findings point to a culture of complacency, wherein the non-LGBT public is under the false and potentially dangerous impression that the work for LGBT equality is done. Yet, GLAAD’s survey also reveals that slow but steady progress is being made for acceptance of LGBT people. In many of the ‘comfortability’ questions central to GLAAD’s Accelerating Acceptance survey, non-LGBT Americans report significantly less discomfort than was reported in 2014.

  • Browsing Through Bias: the Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings for African American Studies and LGBTQIA Studies
Browsing through Bias: The Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings for African American Studies and LGBTQIA Studies Sara A. Howard and Steven A. Knowlton Abstract The knowledge organization system prepared by the Library of Con- gress (LC) and widely used in academic libraries has some disadvan- tages for researchers in the fields of African American studies and LGBTQIA studies. The interdisciplinary nature of those fields means that browsing in stacks or shelflists organized by LC Classification requires looking in numerous locations. As well, persistent bias in the language used for subject headings, as well as the hierarchy of clas- sification for books in these fields, continues to “other” the peoples and topics that populate these titles. This paper offers tools to help researchers have a holistic view of applicable titles across library shelves and hopes to become part of a larger conversation regarding social responsibility and diversity in the library community.1 Introduction The neat division of knowledge into tidy silos of scholarly disciplines, each with its own section of a knowledge organization system (KOS), has long characterized the efforts of libraries to arrange their collections of books. The KOS most commonly used in American academic libraries is the Li- brary of Congress Classification (LCC). LCC, developed between 1899 and 1903 by James C. M. Hanson and Charles Martel, is based on the work of Charles Ammi Cutter. Cutter devised his “Expansive Classification” to em- body the universe of human knowledge within twenty-seven classes, while Hanson and Martel eventually settled on twenty (Chan 1999, 6–12). Those classes tend to mirror the names of academic departments then prevail- ing in colleges and universities (e.g., Philosophy, History, Medicine, and Agriculture).

Common Reading Series: Lavender Lives Forced Relocation for LGBTQ+ Individuals MATTHEW: Good afternoon, everyone. Is my mic good? Thank you. I'm going to be careful because I sit right in the projector line. Thank you, Karen. So ask Karen mentioned, I'm Matthew. I am the director of the Gender Identity Expression Sexual Orientation Resource Center, I use he and his pronouns. And I'm upstairs on the fourth floor of the cub, and the most beautiful view probably outside Webster on this campus. If you haven't seen it-- well, you probably did during your alive program. We overlook Kamiak Butte, which was most likely visible during your time here. Sometimes it's smoky and you can't see anything. So I have you for 45-ish minutes, and I'd like to give you an overview because I never like to be in a presentation where we might not have a roadmap of where we're going. So first off, I've a few notes and a few definitions something that's important to figure out what we're talking about. A little bit of history. Anyone in history 105 or 305? So we're going to talk about why history is important a little bit. Some present day persecution and what we're seeing happening across the globe. And then, what it means to attain refugee status here in the United States or in some of the other countries where we would think we folks are going and where the research already exists. So the UK, Australia, et cetera.

O’Brien, Chair In this dissertation, the introduction defines the erotic-mystical mode, using the poetry and prose of the five feminist writers that I argue constitute a core poetic movement. Based on their shared understandings of the centrality of this disruptive new paradigm—with important influences from English Romanticism—these poets create both lyric and prose works that position them as major leaders in feminist thought in the seventies. Collapsing conventional binaries, their works offer examples of how to live, on the deepest level, as life-affirming beings, regardless of gender, race, class, or sexuality, on a damaged, yet still vibrant, planet. They never deny difference, embracing all that is living, yet still grounded in faith in possibilities of collective communication.
