Earth-leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Requirement

Samsung installation instructions are based on global markets and standards. Samsung requires all electrical requirements of an installation be done by local and national codes.

Factory installation manuals state the following: Caution for electrical work • You must install ELCB or MCCB + ELB - ELCB: Earth leakage breaker - MCCB: Molded case circuit breaker - ELB: Earth leakage breaker • Do not operate the outdoor unit before completing the refrigerant pipe work. • Do not disconnect or change the cable inside the product. It may cause damage to the product. • Specification of the power cable is selected based on following installation condition; culvert installation/ ambient temperature 30ºC(86ºF) / single multi conductor cables. If the condition is different from the ones stated, please consult an electrical installation expert and re-select the power cable. - If the length of power cable exceed 50m (164.04ft), re-select the power cable considering the voltage drop. • Use a power cable made out of incombustible material for the (inner cover) and the sheath (outer cover). • Do not use power cable with the wire core exposed due to insulator damage occurring during the removal of the sheath (outer cover). When the core wire is exposed, it may cause fire.

Earth-leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Requirement

If the electrical supply of the building is solidly grounded or TN-C or TN-C-S Earthing system, then a GFCI or ELCB is not required. These are the most common systems in the United States.

TN-C-S earthing system: Combined protective earth/neutral (PEN) from transformer to building distribution point, but seperate PE and N conductors in fixed indoor wiring and flexible power cords.

If the building electrical supply has been evaluated and the use of ELCB and GFCI are not warranted, Samsung HVAC holds no objections to following the local and national codes for the installation.
