Job Description HEAD OF PHILANTHROPY Department Commercial, Guardian Australia Reports to CEO, Guardian Australia Normal location Sydney or Melbourne Terms and conditions Full-time, permanent Purpose of the role To generate and nurture partnerships to support civic journalism Key responsibilities and accountabilities ● Develop and implement a fundraising strategy for high net worth individuals, private family foundations and philanthropic trusts ● Research and identify funding prospects, including government and private philanthropy in accordance with organisational priorities ● Attend meetings with current and prospective funders and be the first point of contact for philanthropy ● Represent Guardian Australia publicly to help build brand awareness within the philanthropic community and in other donor cultivation meetings ● Liaise with editor and senior editorial staff about reporting priorities and needs ● Understand Guardian Australia’s editorial mission and values ● Generate letters of inquiry, proposals and supporting documents as part of Guardian Australia’s solicitation strategy ● Ensure timely submission of proposals and reports ● Stakeholder management including writing reports for funders and other organisations as required and arranging roundtable meetings to nurture and engage stakeholders ● Liaise with staff from the University of Melbourne regarding the Guardian Civic Journalism Trust, other Guardian Australia staff and Guardian staff internationally ● Maintain and implement calendar of activities, including new funding opportunities, and from time to time attend philanthropy conferences and events ● Systematically conduct research on individuals, trusts and foundations prospect pipelines to develop strong systematic opportunities for market growth ● Work closely with the internal Marketing and Reader Revenue team to nurture supporters into potential high level donors ● Innovate with new models for support of civic journalism - including research into establishing a new foundation ● Develop strategy to expand GNM’s philanthropic income in Australia Key contacts and relationships (internal and external) MD, Editor, Marketing Director, CFO, University of Melbourne Advancement and Engagement staff, UoM Faculty of Arts & Guardian Civic Journalism Trust, staff editorial staff and external trusts, foundations and individuals. PERSON SPECIFICATION Knowledge and experience ● Experience and knowledge of the philanthropic sector and funding opportunities ● Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills ● Minimum of 5 - 6 years work experience in fundraising in a fast-paced, growth - oriented organisation ● Digitally-savvy with experience using Salesforce or similar CRM systems ● Demonstrated success in writing successful grant and funding applications ● Ability to work to deadlines, in cooperation with a range of stakeholders ● Knowledge of one or more of digital, media, higher education, research and development and not-for-profit sectors in Australia 2 Guardian Australia JD ● Ability to think innovatively, conceptually and analytically in order to explore new opportunities ● Have demonstrated ability to raise and grow >$1m philanthropic revenue stream ● Large donor network Skills / behaviours ● Positive with can-do attitude ● Results-driven ● Strategic thinker ● Good communication skills (presenting, other verbal, written etc.) ● Digitally-savvy ● Excellent interpersonal skills ● Ability to communicate and interact at all levels ● Good organisational and time management skills ● Professional, approachable manner ● Ability to work independently, be self sufficient and self motivated ● Resilient ● IT skills (especially MS Office, Mac, Gmail and Google products) This job description is a guide to the work you will initially be required to undertake.
