Major changes include the development of technology which enables digital publishing, distribution and retailing; the entry of disruptive players including Amazon, Google and Apple; the introduction of hand- held digital reading platforms and devices; upheavals in the bricks and mortar retailing sector; and the rise of online and social media as important channels for promoting books. Education publishers are also affected by disruption taking place in the education sector itself, further complicating their business models and operations. To date there has been little systematic examination of the responses of Australian publishers to change and the ways in which traditional publishers are experimenting and innovating, both as defensive responses and initiating change themselves. This report examines changes that are underway in nearly every stage of the publishing process, drawing on findings from interviews with senior Australian publishers. It includes 25 case studies and detailed discussion of the key findings. A broad range of publishers is represented, including major trade and education multinational companies, small and large independent trade publishers, experimental literary presses, scholarly presses and more. These case studies are illustrative, not comprehensive.2 The publishers recount reforms and initiatives that demonstrate a variety of innovations being trialled and implemented in the Australian industry. Keywords: Book publishing; disruption; innovation; authors; publishers; booksellers; books; ebooks; literature; education; cultural economics JEL classification: Z10, Z11 Acknowledgments: ‘The Australian Book Industry: Authors, publishers and readers in a time of change’ is a three-year research project led by Professor David Throsby, and funded by the Australian Research Council under Discovery Project grant DP 140101479 and Macquarie University. Thank you to Professor Throsby, Dr Tom Longden and Mr Paul Crosby: discussions during the ARC project were a beneficial part of the process in preparing this report. Thanks also to Laura Billington for copyediting work and formatting the report. 1 Dr Jan Zwar, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Economics, Adjunct Lecturer, Department of Marketing and Management, Faculty of Business and Economics, Macquarie University. Ph 61 2 9850 8491, Email [email protected] 2 A later stage of this research project involves a survey of traditional Australian book publishers, with the findings due for release in 2016. This survey will indicate the extent to which the initiatives documented in this report are occurring across the industry. i CONTENTS ABSTRACT • Jean-Yves Mollier
French publishing in World War Two: A habitus of submission? Jean-Yves Mollier The present article sets out to explore the situation of French publishing between June 1940 and August 1944. Before addressing the main argument, however, it is important to bear in mind that it is difficult to understand this key sector of French cultural life in the period immediately prior to the Nazi occupation without looking back at its development over the preceding decades and even centuries. Similarly, understanding the deeper meaning underlying the attitude of the leading publishers who occupied the higher echelons of the publishing union means bearing in mind their “centuries-old habitus of submission”1 to authority. Take for example the “voluntary delegation of notables representing Paris's industrial sector” led by the industrialists Emile Menier and Jean- François Cail and the printer Henri Plon to the Elysée Palace on December 19, 1851 to thank Louis- Napoléon Bonaparte for “guaranteeing the defence of order, family, and property” after seizing power in a coup seventeen days earlier.2 Though it is important not to overstate the importance of such an event in the contemporary context, it can be seen as symbolic of a craven attitude to power that remained largely unchanged in the summer of 1940. Napoleon I and his successors set up a system to police the book trade, with inspectors whose task it was to keep a close eye not only on ports and borders, but also printers, bookshops, pedlars, second-hand bookshops, and any other premises or itinerant points of sale where books could be acquired.

M O R A V I A N A R C H I V E S Inventory of the records of the Moravian Publication Office 1823 – 1964 MPO Pauline Fox 2012 History The history of bookselling in Bethlehem began in 1745 when the Moravian Church appointed Samuel Powell, landlord of the Crown Inn on the south bank of the Lehigh River, to also manage the new "Bethlehem Buchladen." Eventually the book store, and other branches dealing with printed materi- al, centered near Main Street on the north side of the river. The first established printing press in Bethlehem began operation in 1830, providing local newspapers and advertising. The first official Moravian publication to be issued was the quarterly "Missionary Intelligencer", from 1822 to 1849, edited by the Rev. Henry Van Vleck and printed in New York City. It was then continued as the monthly "Moravian Church Miscellany" from 1850 to 1855. In 1856 a new and expanded weekly "The Moravian" was introduced, with a joint editorial board of Edmund de Schweinitz, L.F. Kampmann, and F. F. Hagen. At first the printing was done in Philadelphia, then transferred to Bethlehem at the end of 1858. The priority of publication of materials for worship, education and commu- nication was stated in the Resolutions of the 1864 Provincial Synod (Northern District) of the Moravian Church: that "a strenuous effort" should be made to create a printing/publication establishment whenever the Provincial Elders deemed "such a step practicable." The cause of publica- tions was strongly supported by Rev. Sylvester Wolle, who was Treasurer of the Provincial Elders Conference and worked in the Publication Office dur- ing the 1860s.
