2 www.afl vic.com.au DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE GRAND FINAL Development League Grand Final Introductions are really not necessary, Box Hill Hawks and Williamstown are on fi rst name basis when it comes to this big dance.

It seems Box Hill Hawks and Photo: Jenny Owens Williamstown have a date in the Development League Grand Final each year. Over the past nine years, the VFL Hawks have won four Development League premierships, Williamstown has won three. Box Hill Hawks are lining up for its seventh successive Development League Grand Final, Williamstown it’s second. Who will forget the extraordinary match these two clubs played last year when the game went into extra time with the outcome decided by the ‘golden point’. It took an agonising seven minutes before Williamstown was able to register the fi rst score in extra time to seize a truly memorable premiership. It was the second successive year that Box Hill Hawks had lost a heart- breaker as Coburg defeated them by So, the Hawks and Seagulls again square off, just as they seven points in 2012, snapping the VFL Hawks stretch of do in the VFL Preliminary Final. three straight premierships. www.vfl .com.au 3 FINALS PREVIEW Footscray v Port Melbourne Many thought Footscray and Port Melbourne would meet deep in the fi nals series, just not in the Preliminary Final. Many had the clubs penciled in for the VFL Grand Final, but, that’s the vagaries of the game after the Borough lost its Qualifying Final to reigning premiers Box Hill Hawks. Now, Port Melbourne must defeat Footscray, which has had a week to freshen up after a stirring win against Williamstown, if it’s to reach the Grand Final. While the VFL Bulldogs were outstanding and rocketed to fl ag favouritism on the back of that win against Williamstown, queries hover over who will and won’t play. Five players - Mark Austin, Tom Campbell, Jason Johannisen, and Tom Young - who played Port Melbourne took an eternity to shake off a persistent in ’ fi nal home and away loss to Greater Sandringham, but really the Borough’s atrocious conversion Western Sydney are eligible to play in the Preliminary. rate made the game more interesting than it really was. , who played for Footscray in the Qualifying The Borough have the added advantage of playing at home, Final, is unable to play as he did not meet the eligibility but what tempers that physiological edge is that Footscray easily eclipsed Port Melbourne by six goals at the North Port criteria. The Boroughs rely on both so Port Melbourne love nothing more than a challenge, and their output is vital. Footscray will defi nitely provide one.

4 www.afl vic.com.au FINALS PREVIEW Box Hill Hawks v Williamstown Williamstown has much to refl ect on its 150th anniversary celebration, but the Seagulls are looking to add a lasting exclamation point. The competition’s oldest club moved a step closer to achieving its best possible celebration when it delivered one of the most extraordinary comebacks in recent history in last week’s Semi Final victory. Seemingly down for the proverbial eight count, Williamstown dug deep and remarkably ran away from arch rival Werribee. The Seagull’s stunning 9.5 to 0.1 last quarter blitz catapulted it from a 32-point three-quarter time defi cit to a 24-point victory and into the Preliminary Final against reigning premiers Box Hill Hawks. While it was in contrast to its disappointing fi nal quarter against Footscray a week earlier, Williamstown’s belief has never been greater in capping its inaugural standalone season with a premiership. But, Box Hill Hawks present a formidable challenge especially with an infl ux of Hawthorn AFL Listed players into its team that comprehensively defeated one-time fl ag favourite Port Melbourne in the Qualifying Final. Billy Hartung and , who missed the VFL Hawks Qualifying Final success when they played for Hawthorn in the fi nal AFL home and away season, The Seagulls must fi nd a way to apply constant scoreboard are expected to play. www.vfl .com.au 5 RETIREES VFL captains retire Two hundred games was so palpably close that Dom Gleeson could just about touch it. As the home and away season drew to a close he hoped he there might be a fairytale scenario where he could reach the milestone in the VFL Grand Final. But, in the end it wasn’t to be. Geelong missed the fi nals and with it brought the end one of the most respected careers in the clubs history. Not only did Gleeson captain both Werribee and Geelong, but also had the distinction of captaining the VFL in state representative football. The 31-year-old left nothing in the locker room as he gave his all in a 197 game career, headlined by a premiership with Geelong. “I’ve loved every minute of it,” declared Gleeson. “I knew very early in my career that I wasn’t good enough for AFL footy, but I always wanted to play at the highest level I could.” Gleeson said it’s hard to split the good times he enjoyed at both Werribee and Geelong, but the premiership success he enjoyed with the VFL Cats is a clear standout. He described his 13-seasons as “an amazing journey”, one which he thanked all his coaches, teammates, family and above all his wife Erin. “The VFL is such a great competition that has opened so many pathways for me, I could not speak more highly of it,” Gleeson said. 6 www.afl vic.com.au YOUNG GUNS Young Guns The curtain may well have fallen on their clubs for 2014, but for 40 plus players the season importantly continues this weekend. The Young Guns match, a curtain raiser to Sunday’s Preliminary Final which draws talented players from all across Victoria - from the VFL, TAC Cup, VAFA, community and country leagues - provides players another opportunity to impress AFL recruiting staff. While no one can say with surety their recruitment was as a direct result of the Young Guns match, it’s worth noting that AFL listed players Sam Dunnell, , Andrew Collins, all played in the Young Guns Jaden McGrath match in recent years.
