While Northern has struck form and momentum at the right end of the season, Eastern has to fi nd a way to regroup after losing its past two games. Calder dealt the Ranges a wake-up call with a 47-point defeat in the last home and away game and then Dandenong delivered a reality check last week. Admittedly, Eastern has been without star midfi elder Mitch Honeychurch the past two games, but he hasn’t played now since Round 15. While the inclusion of Honeychurch will provide a much needed spark, the Ranges can’t rely on one player to lift them into the Preliminary Final. Too much was left for too few against Dandenong. And, in most part it was left to the usual suspects – Ben Cavarra and Michael Apeness – to fl y the fl ag for Eastern. The Ranges will need an overall contribution if they’re to stop the charging Knights, which ended Gippsland’s season with a minimum of fuss. Northern’s dominance could be seen in many facets outside the fact it had 32 scoring shots to the Power’s 14. The margin could easily have blown out beyond 10 goals had the Knights’ conversion been better. While star forward Ben Lennon led the way with three goals, Northern had 11 individual goal kickers. Rover Billy Murphy, playing just his second game since the start of June, provided Northern with plenty of energy and drive. The two Josh’s – Iacobaccio and Turner – were among

Murray kicked just two goals over the fi nal three quarters as Western clawed its way back in the match to turn a 15-point three-quarter defi cit into a nine point win. Western’s self-belief was apparent as it kicked 4.3 to Murray’s 0.3 in the last quarter to register a deserved win. Signifi cantly, Western owns a 7-5 record in those tight games. Vic Metro representative Jake Greiser shone for the Jets, just as he had all season. Greisher was ably supported by David Iaccarino, who kicked three goals, Lachlan Hickey, Corey Ellis and Harley Walshe. Apart from its close games against Western, Calder has played in only two other games, including a one-point win against Geelong in Round 16. But, Calder, which fi nished off the season winning fi ve of its last six games, received a jolt last week when Geelong completely outplayed it in the Qualifying Final. After matching the Falcons in the fi rst quarter, the Cannons fell away in uncharacteristic fashion. The Cannons will be looking for a lift all over the ground with Vic Metro representatives Reilly O’Brien and Jake Lever, who both played well against Geelong, as well as Jason Cooke and Jake Owen leading the way. Expect the Cannons to rebound. It has little alternative, if they don’t the season will be over. It promises to be yet another enthralling match-up between the Cannons and Jets.

One of those losses was against Calder, which dealt Geelong a one-point defeat in Round 16. The Falcons ensured there was to be no repeat of the result as they were clearly the better team throughout the Qualifying Final. Geelong’s defensive pressure was outstanding as they suffocated the Cannons’ ability to run, carry and score with any regularity or effi ciency. After allowing three goals in the fi rst term, Geelong held Calder to four goals for the rest of the match. The Falcons took charge in the second quarter when they turned its two-point defi cit into a 19-point half time lead then burst open the match in the third quarter. With its Vic Country representatives Joe Maishman, James Tsitas, Fraser Fort, Hugh Goodard and Patrick McCartin all contributing, Geelong consigned the Qualifying Final to history. But, it wasn’t only its recognized prime movers that set up the victory. Sam Russell, Reid Adams, Scott Dixon and George Cameron all played their roles. Goddard, who kicked three goals, has now kicked goals in all his seven games and multiple goals in six of them. He shared the goal kicking honors with McCartin and Dixon.
