Lydia Saleh Rofail i Abstract This thesis undertakes a detailed examination of a close corpus of five Australian literary novels published between 2005 and 2011, to assess the political, social, and cultural implications of 9/11 upon an urban Australian identity. My analysis of the literary city will reveal how this identity is trapped between layers of trauma which include haunting historical atrocities and inward nationalism, as well as the contrasting outward pull of global aspirations. Dead Europe by Christos Tsiolkas (2005), The Unknown Terrorist by Richard Flanagan (2006), Underground by Andrew McGahan (2006), Breath by Tim Winton (2008), and Five Bells by Gail Jones (2011) are uniquely varied narratives written in the shadow of 9/11. These novels reconfigure fictional notions of Australian urbanism in order to deal with fears and threats posed by 9/11 and the fallout that followed, where global interests fed into national concerns and discourses within Australia and resonated down to local levels. Adopting an Australia perspective, this thesis contextualises subsequent traumatic and apocalyptic trajectories in relation to urbanism and Australian identity in a post-9/11 world.

A Critical Genealogy Andrea Josipovic MCouns (University of Queensland), Magister Artium (German Philology, Art History and European History, Universität zu Köln) 0000-0002-8819-1029 A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2020 School of History and Philosophical Inquiry Abstract My thesis seeks to investigate the historical dimension of modern concerns about child sexual abuse, with a particular focus on women as offenders. It attempts to redress conceptual oversights which are directly related to the single-minded view that child sexual abuse constitutes a gendered crime whereby women as agents of such abuse have been rendered almost completely absent. The assumption is that the very great majority of sexual offending is committed by men, not women, and not, for that matter, other children. Everyday encounters with this dominant narrative have prompted me to engage in a more detailed inquiry. Despite its ubiquity, time and again cases emerge where women have criminally engaged in sex with children. Since women and children often find themselves alone together within spheres of “privacy,” I will primarily be studying the domestic space of the family home as the site of its occurrence. I am interested to learn how women as possible offenders of child sexual abuse have vanished from sight, and along with them, their victims. Accounts of contemporary child protection practice do not often centralise history as their primary object of inquiry in order to deepen an understanding of present concerns. In contrast, I plan to demonstrate that there is indeed merit in investigating the genealogy of child sexual abuse as a gendered crime, not least because it can help to inform and adjust contemporary child protection assessments.

Colleen Murrell reports on the increasing levels of distrust both between the players – The Australian versions of The Guardian, the Daily Mail and the BBC – and between those players and the tough local media groups, Fairfax Media and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Australia. Last Thursday the chief executive of Guardian Media Group, Andrew Miller, gave the annual Polis lecture in London in which he didn’t appear to welcome the BBC’s expansion into Australia. He disputed that this should be a “core part” of the BBC’s mission and said it did not “benefit UK licence fee payers or meet the requirement of the BBC to provide news in parts of the world where there are limited alternatives”. He added. “It threatens a distortion that is not in the interests of audiences or other UK news providers”. Alluding to the ‘licence fee payers’ is disingenuous as the expanded website venture isn’t funded by the licence fee but is a commercial enterprise that will be financed by advertising. It is therefore the second part of the allegation – that it is not in the interests of “other UK news providers” – that really bothers the Guardian. I had become a very respectable student trouble-maker, as President of the Sydney Students’ Representative Council. This took me to the annual meetings of the then National Union of Australian University Students 1 (NUAS), held mostly in Melbourne. It was there that I met remarkable student leaders from this University. They included Pierre Slicer, later to be a Justice of the Supreme Court of Tasmania here today with his wife Antonia Kohl; Dennis Altman, later to become a Professor of La Trobe University in Melbourne and a world leader in the advancement of equal rights for LGBTIQ people; and Patti Warn, who served with senior ministers in the Hawke and Keating Governments and in health governance in New South Wales.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com For more than thirty years, Dennis Altman, a self-described "international activist-academic," has written on such topics as the United States and its politics, the gay movement, postage stamps, AIDS, the modernization of Asia, and national identity. He specializes in theories and practices of sexuality, in particular the development of the gay and lesbian movement and the globalization of sexual identities. He is also interested in the social, political, and cultural impact of the AIDS epidemic. Gore Vidal pays tribute to Altman in the preface to a 1995 edition of The City and the Pillar (originally published in 1948), where he recounts how the book was taken from Altman at the Sydney airport in 1969: "Altman challenged the obscenity law under which the book had been seized. The judge in the case acknowledged that under the law that he must administer the book was obscene, but then, in a famous obiter dicta, he wrote that he thought the law absurd: in due course, it was changed." (Vidal is right about Altman, but the book in question was actually Myra Breckinridge.) Moreover, in a series of footnotes in Kiss of the Spider Woman (1983), Argentinian writer Manuel Puig cites Altman's most important work, Homosexual: Oppression and Liberation, as one of the first books to chronicle the gay and lesbian liberation movement. In addition, Jeffrey Weeks, a respected scholar of sexuality studies, praises Altman in his Making Sexual History (2000) for "anticipating" rather than simply recording change.
