I furthermore plan to examine how this Anzac myth excluded and even erased the place of marginalized communities in the birth of Australia and New Zealand as modern nations. In other words, my thesis explores both the insiders and the outsiders of the Anzac myth. My cutting- edge research aims to build upon the small but growing scholarship about these "forgotten" Anzacs and their role in the construction of nationhood. Much has been written about white male Anzacs, and by writing this thesis, I hope to contribute to bridging this disparity in the scholarly literature. Not only will I highlight the roles of women and people of color in greater detail, but I will also analyze how the formation of the Anzac myth systematically excluded them in the first place. The work also explores the ramifications and implications of this exclusion in Australia and New Zealand as increasingly multicultural nations. In sum, it brings together three threads of research: the formation of national identity in these nations, the paradox of the public's reverence of the failed military campaign of Gallipoli, and the exclusion of the "forgotten" women Anzacs and people of color. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to gratefully acknowledge the invaluable contributions of my thesis chair, Dr. Amelia Lyons, without whom this project would not have been possible. Taken by Anne Donnell. ...................... 51 v INTRODUCTION While visiting the National Museum of New Zealand in April 2018, I encountered an exhibition on the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzacs) service during the Gallipoli campaign of World War I (WWI). Titled “Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War,” the massive exhibition had attracted over two and a half million visitors by March 2019 and has been extended until 2022. The long run is a testament to the importance of Gallipoli to New Zealanders, colloquially known as “Kiwis.”1 A few months later, I read an article on Australian Anzac soldiers of Chinese origin; I had no idea they existed.2 Although the Gallipoli exhibit contained a section on Māori (indigenous people of New Zealand) soldiers, representations of Anzacs in popular culture are almost exclusively of white males of European ancestry. Upon further reading, I realized the Anzac image is central to the national identity of both Australia and New Zealand. I started to wonder why this image of a World War One soldier is central to these nations’ identity, and is it an accident that women and people of color are not a part of traditional visions of the Anzacs? This then led me to ask how this image reflects or even creates the national identity of both countries. There is, in fact, concrete evidence of women and people of color serving as Anzacs, but the dominant historical narrative has suppressed their stories. I will go on to show this evidence,

The men behind the legend of the ANZAC's are worthy and inspirational role models for a society with lost youth. In the early morning on the twenty fifth of April 1915, courageous Australian soldiers made it into Australia's history when they landed at Gallipoli Peninsula with the intent of reaching Plugge's Plateau. That same day, troops from New Zealand landed in Gallipoli, and side by side the Australians and New Zealanders created the Anzac legend. This battle forever bound the two cultures, in a web of glory and mateship.1 These men, the best of humanity were shot down in a manner which could only be called, a slaughter. Many men, some of whom can be described as fresh from boyhood, had smuggled themselves into the war because their judgement was clouded with promises of glory and peer pressure.2 These men were gunned down by bullets shot by men they had no personal quarrel. Soldiers or 'diggers' as they later became known, were slain until the blood red of the poppy could no longer be indentified and separated. Although the men, watched their mates be cut down without mercy, they continued to charge up to the cliffs and give their life in the service of their country. 'Lest we forget'. The ANZAC's displayed inspirational traits such as bravery, loyalty, discipline, endurance, mateship, persistence and initiative.

He recently spoke at the University of Auckland Business School’s Dean’s Speaker Series as a Co-Chair of the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum, and his speech was entitled “Keeping the ANZAC spirit alive: the future of the Trans-Tasman trading relationship.” This is an edited and adapted version of that speech. here can be no doubt that the relationship between T Australia and New Zealand is essentially a people relationship.     tHe GaLlIpOlI CaMpAiGn The Gallipoli Campaign was an attack on the Gallipoli peninsula during World War I, between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916. The Gallipoli peninsula was an important tactical position during World War I. The British War Council suggested that Germany could be defeated by attacks on her allies, Austria, Hungary and Turkey. The Allied forces of the British Empire (including Australia and New Zealand) aimed to force a passage through the Dardanelles Strait and capture the Turkish capital, Constantinople. At dawn on 25 April 1915, Anzac assault troops landed north of Gaba Tepe, at what became known as Anzac Cove, while the British forces landed at Cape Helles on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The campaign was a brave but costly failure. By December 1915 plans were drawn up to evacuate the entire force from Gallipoli. On 19 and 20 December, the evacuation of over 142,000 men from Anzac Cove commenced and was completed three weeks later with minimal casualties. In total, the whole Gallipoli campaign caused 26,111 Australian casualties, including 8,141 deaths. Since 1916 the anniversary of the landings on 25 April has been commemorated as Anzac Day, becoming one of the most important national celebrations in Australia and New Zealand. tHe GaLlIpOlI CaMpAiGn The Gallipoli Campaign was an attack on the Gallipoli peninsula during World War I, between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916. It brings to life the experiences of many Old Boys who died at Gallipoli and some who survived, only to be fatally wounded in the trenches or no-man’s land of the western front. Wesley annually honoured these names, even after the Second World War was over. The silence in Adamson Hall as name after name was read aloud, almost like a slow drum beat, is still in the mind, some seventy or more years later. The messages written by these young men, or about them, are evocative. Even the more humdrum and everyday letters capture, above the noise and tension, the courage. Lydia Saleh Rofail i Abstract This thesis undertakes a detailed examination of a close corpus of five Australian literary novels published between 2005 and 2011, to assess the political, social, and cultural implications of 9/11 upon an urban Australian identity. My analysis of the literary city will reveal how this identity is trapped between layers of trauma which include haunting historical atrocities and inward nationalism, as well as the contrasting outward pull of global aspirations. Dead Europe by Christos Tsiolkas (2005), The Unknown Terrorist by Richard Flanagan (2006), Underground by Andrew McGahan (2006), Breath by Tim Winton (2008), and Five Bells by Gail Jones (2011) are uniquely varied narratives written in the shadow of 9/11. These novels reconfigure fictional notions of Australian urbanism in order to deal with fears and threats posed by 9/11 and the fallout that followed, where global interests fed into national concerns and discourses within Australia and resonated down to local levels. Adopting an Australia perspective, this thesis contextualises subsequent traumatic and apocalyptic trajectories in relation to urbanism and Australian identity in a post-9/11 world.

Memorial after ANZAC Day Service !2 Preface This resource has been compiled by Uniting Church in Australia ministers who are current- ly in placement as Chaplains in the Australian Defence Force. Some of them have seen deployments in places of war and served for many years while others are new to this min- istry who care for sailors, soldiers and airmen and women in the ADF and their families. These traditional and interactive prayers have been provided for congregations that will be remembering Australians throughout the centenary year of World War 1 and in particular the landings at Gallipoli. The prayers in this resource have been broken up in light of the four fold structure of wor- ship, as found in Uniting in Worship 2: Gathering, Word, Remembrance, and Sending. There is a fifth section which has been compiled from prayers used by Chaplains in public services, such as ANZAC Days and Remembrance Days.
