Qudāmah (w. 682 H. 1283 M.), Ibn Taymīyah (w. 728 H./1328 M.), Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzīyah (w. 751 H./1350 M.), dan Ibn Rajab (w. 795 H./1393 M.). digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id digilib.uinsby.ac.id KATA PENGANTAR Puji syukur kehadirat Allah swt.

  • The 21 Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain And
The 21st Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain and Germany Submitted by Caroline Neumueller to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Arab and Islamic Studies October 2012 1 2 Abstract The dissertation focuses on the conversion experiences and individual processes of twenty-four native British Muslim converts and fifty-two native German Muslim converts, based on personal interviews and completed questionnaires between 2008 and 2010. It analyses the occurring similarities and differences among British and German Muslim converts, and puts them into relation to basic Islamic requirements of the individual, and in the context of their respective social settings. Accordingly, the primary focus is placed on the changing behavioural norms in the individual process of religious conversion concerning family and mixed-gender relations and the converts’ attitudes towards particularly often sensitive and controversial topics. My empirical research on this phenomenon was guided by many research questions, such as: What has provoked the participants to convert to Islam, and what impact and influence does their conversion have on their (former and primarily) non-Muslim environment? Do Muslim converts tend to distance themselves from their former lifestyles and change their social behavioural patterns, and are the objectives and purposes that they see themselves having in the given society directed to them being: bridge-builders or isolators? The topic of conversion to Islam, particularly within Western non-Muslim societies is a growing research phenomenon. At the same time, there has only been little contribution to the literature that deals with comparative analyses of Muslim converts in different countries.

  • Narratives of Conversion to Islam in Britain
centre of islamic studies, cambridge The Centre of Islamic studies seeks to develop a constructive and critical understanding of Islam in the modern world. Its priority is to develop high-quality research and outreach programmes about Islam in the United Kingdom and Europe. Through its roster of scholarship, symposia, reports and interactive educational events, the Centre is committed to engaging with academics, policy-makers and wider society. This report is exclusively about female converts to Islam in Britain. Conversion implies continuity and change, association and, at times, involuntary dissociation. It looks back, and it looks forward in a journey with meanings which vary with time and from person to person. Female conversion to Islam in particular challenges the binaries of tradition versus modernity and faith versus secularism, by combining in the person of the convert – and her body – both the insider and the outsider, and doing so in a way that has the capacity to dilute the rough and ready distinction between ‘us’ and ‘them’. In the person and body of the female convert to Islam, the ‘twain shall and do meet’. This in-betweenness of female converts poses challenges to our mental and social tax- onomies, being insiders/outsiders and intimate strangers at one and the same time, to both the non-Muslim majority and the Muslim minority in Britain.’ PROFESSOR YASIR SULEIMAN , PREFACE Narratives of Conversion to Islam in Britain , , , Female Perspectives : + () • : + () • : @... • The Need for a Sacred Science: an Intellectual Defence of the Tradition
Review Article The Need for a Sacred Science: An Intellectual Defence of the Tradition By Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Albany: State University of New York Press, SUNY Series in Religious Studies, 1993. Looking through humanity's experience of history one finds, in a vari ety of ways, a tendency to go beyond time. 1 This was true in premodem man and is equally prevalent in the postmodern view of human spirituality, even though postmodemism as an entity has failed to recognize the need and logic of such an idea. 2 In response, contemporary religious thinkers, philosophers, and spiritualists have argued for the revival of "tradition," religious values, and spirituality. Some of the main proponents of this "tra ditionist school" (p. 53) are Huston Smith, Frithjof Schuon, Gai Eaton, Titus Burckhardt, Martin Lings, and, of course, Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Nasr has written on several topics within the field of Islamics as well as other related disciplines. However, the major portion of his writings have been permeated with such themes as scientia sacra, perennial phi losophy, and the revival of spiritual traditions. These are indicative of his concern for and commitment to the cause of the revival of tradition. In the words of Jane Smith, he is the "defender of the sacred."3 His works on Islam, especially on Sufism, the philosophy of religion, Shi'ite thought, and various topics in world religions are too innumerable to be accounted for here. 3 But Nasr's relevance extends far beyond the areas of Islamic studies and comparative religion, for he writes for the specialist and for the wider public and appeals to those who are interest ed not only in religion and spirituality as such but also in their interrela tion to philosophy, science, social science, policy making, art, and youth issues.

This study critically explores and analyses through content analysis method on available published ‘Islamic’ documents, which are purposively sampled based on relevancy to the existence. We shared what we found related to existential psychotherapy using cognitive behavior therapy for depressed Muslim clients in supporting the current call for integrating Islamic teachings and practice. Mainly, being intersubjective is very crucial for therapists’ competency because Muslim clients are from diverse Islamic backgrounds. Reorienting Sufism: Hamka an d Islamic M ysticism in the M alay W orld Khairudin Aljunied This article examines the ideas of a prominent Southeast Asian thinker on Sufism in the Malay World. Haji Abdul Malik bin Abdul Karim Amrullah (1908-81), better known by his penname “Hamka,” is still regarded today as one the most influential Muslim public figures in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. He wrote more than a hundred books that covered a wide variety of topics, including Islamic philosophy, theology, history, jurisprudence, ethics, literature, and culture. More than three decades after his death, his books are still read and referred to by many Muslim scholars across the Southeast Asian region. Many of his writings are assigned as essential texts for university courses in Malaysia and Indonesia, and his writings on Sufism still attract a wide readership.* 1 Born in Minangkabau, in Sumatra, in the early twentieth century, Hamka hailed from a family of scholars and reformers who held different views about Sufism. His great-grandfather and grandfather were both proponents of Sufi practices and subscribed to the Naqshbandiyyah Sufi order, which had a strong following in island Sumatra as well as in other parts of the Malay World. By comparison, Hamka’s father, Abdul Karim Amrullah, was an ardent opponent of Sufistic tendencies and one of the Khairudin Aljunied is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore. 1 To be sure, the supply of postgraduate theses and critical studies on Hamka alone deserves a bibliography of its own.
