Leiden: LOT (Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics), 2007, 438 pp. ISBN 9789078328247. Price: EUR 32.27 (paperback). ALEXANDER ADELAAR Asia Institute, University of Melbourne [email protected] The traditional languages in Indonesia’s West Kalimantan Province are pre- dominantly Malayic and Bidayuhic (although some other language groups are also represented). Mualang belongs to the Ibanic branch of the Malayic lan- guage group and is spoken in the Belitang Hulu, Belitang Hilir and Belitang districts of Sekadau Regency (formerly part of Sanggau Regency). Based on purely linguistic criteria, it is clearly in a dialect relation with Iban, one of the main languages in Sarawak and a minority language in West Kalimantan. It is probably even more like Iban than some other Ibanic languages, which have not developed the diphthongs that are so typical of Iban and Mualang (for example, datay ‘come’; jalay ‘road’; tikay ‘mat’). Notable differences between the two varieties are that Iban does not exhibit nasal preplosion and postplo- sion (see below), and that Iban has acquired a transitive suffix –ka, whereas in Mualang this element is still a preposition. According to Tjia, another dif- ference is that in Iban mid vowels are phonemic whereas in Mualang they are allophones of high vowels, but this is just a matter of analysis, as Scott (1957) was able to show that Iban high and mid vowels were still allophones, in spite of the rather non-phonemic Iban spelling conventions. -
SOCIOLOGISTS and SUFIS: a REASSESSMENT of SAINTHOOD in EARLY SUFISM in LIGHT of NEW DEVELOPMENTS in SOCIOLOGY by SVEND A. WHIT
SOCIOLOGISTS AND SUFIS: A REASSESSMENT OF SAINTHOOD IN EARLY SUFISM IN LIGHT OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN SOCIOLOGY by SVEND A. WHITE (Under the Direction of Alan Godlas) ABSTRACT Western sociologists have often viewed Sufi saints and Islamic mysticism in general through lenses that obscure the vibrant and multi-faceted sociological role long played by Sufi saints in Islamic societies. The reasons for this are many, complex, and open to debate, some responsibility must be assigned to the great Max Weber (. 1920) and his disciples, especially Ernest Gellner (. 1995 CE) and Clifford Geertz (. 2006 CE), whose ideas have despite the best of intentions often reinforced important misconceptions. A review of the core tenets of Sufism on sainthood through the prism of the great medieval mystics Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī (. 910 CE) and Ibn ʿArabī (. 1320 CE) reveals stark limitations to Weberian categories vis-à-vis Islamic mysticism. Such an analysis highlights the need for more holistic and less implicitly Eurocentric approaches to sociological studies of Islam and Sufism. The Formation of Liberal and Anti-Liberal Islamic Legal Thinking in Indonesia Akh
Akh. Muzakki IS EDUCATION DETERMINANT? The Formation of Liberal and Anti-liberal Islamic Legal Thinking in Indonesia Akh. Muzakki The University of Queensland, Australia Abstract: Liberalism and anti-liberalism are two increasing- ly prominent but staunchly opposing streams of Islamic legal thinking in Indonesia. This article analyses the formation of each of the two through an examination of the role of formal education. It focuses on organic intellectuals during two periods, the New Order and the reformasi. Challenging the strongly-held thesis of the determinant role of education, this article argues that both liberal and anti-liberal Islamic legal thinking in Indonesia is a result of not only the intellectual formation in the sense of academic training and access to education and knowledge, but also the sociological background and exposure in building a new epistemic community in an urban context. As a theoretical understanding of sociolo- gical background and exposure, the concept of epistemic community deserves to be taken as an analytical framework in addition to education for the analysis of the formation of the two contesting bents of Islamic legal thinking in Indonesia. Keywords: Liberalism, anti-liberalism, Islamic legal think- ing, education, epistemic community. Introduction In his controversial speech entitled “The Necessity of Islamic Renewal Thinking and the Problem of the Integration of the Ummah” on 2 January 1970, Madjid argued for a dynamic approach to Islam which requires reinterpretation of Islamic teachings in context with place and time. In more elaborate ways, he further argued that Islamic values move in line with the spirit of humanitarianism which promotes 280 JOURNAL OF INDONESIAN ISLAM Volume 01, Number 02, December 2007 Is Education Determinant? the dignity of Mankind. -
Under the Direction of ALAN GODLAS)
ABSTRACT A DECONSTRUCTIVE READING OF NURCHOLISH MADJID’S THOUGHT ON RELIGIOUS REFORM by MOHAMMAD HANAFI (Under the Direction of ALAN GODLAS) Nurcholish Madjid (1939-2005) is an icon for reform of Islamic thought. He is the champion of the so-called, Islamic neo-modernism thought. His claim that the universality and transcendency of his thought inclines to negate the understanding of the “other” and puts his own on a higher level. Thus, his religious discourse becomes totalitarian and hegemonic leading to a one dimension understanding. It functions as a rule to justify the legitimacy of the other. Many attempts have been made to overide his authority but they have not shaken it; on the contrary, those criticisms have been considered immature and amature as well. Based on this concern, this study seeks to use Nurcholish’s own work to dethrone his authority from its ivory tower by employing deconstructive criticism because of its assumption that a text is heterograph. This study focuses on Nurcholish’s three major themes: secularization, masyarakat madani (Islamic civil society), and pluralism. INDEX WORDS: Islam, Neomodernism, Nurcholish Madjid, Indonesia, Deconstruction, Logocentrism, Secularization, Masyarakat Madani, Islamic Civil Society, Religious Pluralism. Path(S) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community”
“Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” By Jaison Carter A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair Professor Charles Hirschkind Professor Stefania Pandolfo Professor Ula Y. Taylor Spring 2018 Abstract “Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” by Jaison Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair The Mustafawiyya Tariqa is a regional spiritual network that exists for the purpose of assisting Muslim practitioners in heightening their level of devotion and knowledges through Sufism. Though it was founded in 1966 in Senegal, it has since expanded to other locations in West and North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1994, protegé of the Tariqa’s founder and its most charismatic figure, Shaykh Arona Rashid Faye al-Faqir, relocated from West Africa to the United States to found a satellite community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. This location, named Masjidul Muhajjirun wal Ansar, serves as a refuge for traveling learners and place of worship in which a community of mostly African-descended Muslims engage in a tradition of remembrance through which techniques of spiritual care and healing are activated. This dissertation analyzes the physical and spiritual trajectories of African-descended Muslims through an ethnographic study of their healing practices, migrations, and exchanges in South Carolina and in Senegal. By attending to manner in which the Mustafawiyya engage in various kinds of embodied religious devotions, forms of indebtedness, and networks within which diasporic solidarities emerge, this project explores the dispensations and transmissions of knowledge to Sufi practitioners across the Atlantic that play a part in shared notions of Black Muslimness. -
Nur Muhammad" Concept in Malay Manuscripts: Tajalliy and Faidhun's Perspective Study
The Controversy of "Nur Muhammad" Concept in Malay Manuscripts: Tajalliy and Faidhun's Perspective Study Sangidu1, Harun Joko Prayitno2, Elita Ulfina3, Sherif Sa’ad El-Jayyar4, Awla Akbar Ilma5 {[email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] } Universitas Gajah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia1, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Surakarta, Indonesia2, IAIN Surakarta,Surakarta, Indonesia3, Bany Suef University, Egypt4, Suez Canal University, Egypt5 Abstract. The issue of the concept of "Nur Muhammad" in the general perspective still cannot resolve the nature of beings and life. This research is intended to explore the controversy surrounding the concept of "Nur Muhammad", focusing particularly on the manuscript Hikayat Nur Muhammad but also considering other Malay manuscripts to explore how "Nur Muhammad" was understood. In the context of Islamic philosophy, the concept of tajalliy (emanation) holds that everything in the universe, including human beings, originate from the "Nur Muhammad", the Almighty, viewed as the source of all light. Disagreement over the process through which the universe and its contents were created, including human beings, has created conflict between the Ahlu Wachdatil-Wujūd (Syaikh Hamzah Fansuri, Syaikh Syamsuddin As-Samatrani, and their followers) and the Ahlu Wachdatisy-Syuhūd (Syaikh Nuruddin Ar-Raniry and his followers). This research has found that the Ahlu Wachdatil-Wujūd have held that the process through which "Nur Muhammad" spread from ta`ayyun tsāniy (second reality) or a`yān tsābitah (fixed reality) to a`yān khārijiyyah (reality outside Dzāt, Wujūd, and His essence) was not a process of creation, but rather one of radiance or tajalliy.
