University of Tabriz- Iran Philosophical Investigations Vol. 11/ No. 21/ Fall & Winter 2017 Philosophical Rationalism in Shia Kalam* Seyyed Mohammad Ali Dibaji** Associate professor, university of Tehran Abstract One important question that the emergence of philosophical or rational Kalam has raised is what rationalism in the so-called Kalami (theological) schools actually means. This paper investigates the answers to the aforementioned question in Shi’a Kalam. Also, we have a comparative look at the philosophical Kalam and the rational one, concluding the identity of Shi’a Kalam with Shi’a philosophy. In this work, we have referred to three types of rationalism: personal, Vahmi (imaginal), and Hikmi (philosophical) rationalism. In short, our answer to the above question would be that, Shi’a Kalam – specially in Khaje Nasir’s works – is based on Hikmah (philosophy), and so, rationalism in this school does not refer but to this approach. This type of rationalism is in contrast to the personal or Vahmi rationalism. The 21st Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain and Germany Submitted by Caroline Neumueller to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Arab and Islamic Studies October 2012 1 2 Abstract The dissertation focuses on the conversion experiences and individual processes of twenty-four native British Muslim converts and fifty-two native German Muslim converts, based on personal interviews and completed questionnaires between 2008 and 2010. It analyses the occurring similarities and differences among British and German Muslim converts, and puts them into relation to basic Islamic requirements of the individual, and in the context of their respective social settings. Accordingly, the primary focus is placed on the changing behavioural norms in the individual process of religious conversion concerning family and mixed-gender relations and the converts’ attitudes towards particularly often sensitive and controversial topics. My empirical research on this phenomenon was guided by many research questions, such as: What has provoked the participants to convert to Islam, and what impact and influence does their conversion have on their (former and primarily) non-Muslim environment? Do Muslim converts tend to distance themselves from their former lifestyles and change their social behavioural patterns, and are the objectives and purposes that they see themselves having in the given society directed to them being: bridge-builders or isolators? The topic of conversion to Islam, particularly within Western non-Muslim societies is a growing research phenomenon. At the same time, there has only been little contribution to the literature that deals with comparative analyses of Muslim converts in different countries. -

Artículos & Ensayos Históricos, sociológicos & religiosos sobre Persia & el actual Irán Los Barmakíes, la saga de ministros del califato abbasí Joaquín Rodríguez Vargas Orígenes Los Barmakíes o Barmécidas eran originariamente monjes budistas persas que regentaban en Balj, en el actual Afganistán, un monasterio llamado Nobahâr, forma persa del vocablo sánscrito nava-vihâra, que significa «nuevo monasterio», lugar venerado por los budistas de toda la zona y donde acudían multitud de peregrinos a cumplir con sus obligaciones religiosas y a ofrecer sus presentes; desde los más humildes hasta los reyes, allí se dirigían a rendir culto al buda principal que presidía la gran sala e iban besando la mano del sacerdote dirigente del monasterio. El nombre de Nobahâr, lo primero que evoca a la mente de un hablante de persa es el significado de «nueva primavera» (no, nuevo, Bahâr, primavera). En efecto, los historiadores que han escrito sobre los Barmakíes, en su mayoría persas, no sólo han confundido la etimología verdadera de esta denominación sino que incluso han justificado con historias, reales o no, sus argumentos. Esta confusión se hace más comprensible al saber que había ciudades en Asia Central (cerca de Samarcanda y Bujara) que se llamaban de la misma manera y que, obviamente, los persas del lugar entendían como «nueva primavera». Tuvo que ser el inglés Rawlinson quien a mediados del siglo XIX se percató de la verdadera etimología de Nobahâr. Los historiadores musulmanes relatan historias inverosímiles sobre este desconocido monasterio cuya ubicación, aún en el día de hoy, no ha podido ser localizada con exactitud. centre of islamic studies, cambridge The Centre of Islamic studies seeks to develop a constructive and critical understanding of Islam in the modern world. Its priority is to develop high-quality research and outreach programmes about Islam in the United Kingdom and Europe. Through its roster of scholarship, symposia, reports and interactive educational events, the Centre is committed to engaging with academics, policy-makers and wider society. This report is exclusively about female converts to Islam in Britain. Conversion implies continuity and change, association and, at times, involuntary dissociation. It looks back, and it looks forward in a journey with meanings which vary with time and from person to person. Female conversion to Islam in particular challenges the binaries of tradition versus modernity and faith versus secularism, by combining in the person of the convert – and her body – both the insider and the outsider, and doing so in a way that has the capacity to dilute the rough and ready distinction between ‘us’ and ‘them’. In the person and body of the female convert to Islam, the ‘twain shall and do meet’. Review Article The Need for a Sacred Science: An Intellectual Defence of the Tradition By Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Albany: State University of New York Press, SUNY Series in Religious Studies, 1993. Looking through humanity's experience of history one finds, in a vari ety of ways, a tendency to go beyond time. 1 This was true in premodem man and is equally prevalent in the postmodern view of human spirituality, even though postmodemism as an entity has failed to recognize the need and logic of such an idea. 2 In response, contemporary religious thinkers, philosophers, and spiritualists have argued for the revival of "tradition," religious values, and spirituality. Some of the main proponents of this "tra ditionist school" (p. 53) are Huston Smith, Frithjof Schuon, Gai Eaton, Titus Burckhardt, Martin Lings, and, of course, Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Nasr has written on several topics within the field of Islamics as well as other related disciplines. However, the major portion of his writings have been permeated with such themes as scientia sacra, perennial phi losophy, and the revival of spiritual traditions. These are indicative of his concern for and commitment to the cause of the revival of tradition. In the words of Jane Smith, he is the "defender of the sacred."3 His works on Islam, especially on Sufism, the philosophy of religion, Shi'ite thought, and various topics in world religions are too innumerable to be accounted for here. 3 But Nasr's relevance extends far beyond the areas of Islamic studies and comparative religion, for he writes for the specialist and for the wider public and appeals to those who are interest ed not only in religion and spirituality as such but also in their interrela tion to philosophy, science, social science, policy making, art, and youth issues. -

This study critically explores and analyses through content analysis method on available published ‘Islamic’ documents, which are purposively sampled based on relevancy to the existence. We shared what we found related to existential psychotherapy using cognitive behavior therapy for depressed Muslim clients in supporting the current call for integrating Islamic teachings and practice. Mainly, being intersubjective is very crucial for therapists’ competency because Muslim clients are from diverse Islamic backgrounds.
