Many international scholars; be them from the east and west, Muslims or non-Muslims; recognize Muslim scholarship in Religionswissenschaft (Religious Studies). In sum, comparative study of religions is regarded as one of the great contributions of Muslim’s civilization to mankind’s intellectual progress. Nevertheless, when referring to the popular works of Muslim scholars in this discipline, most people will refer to only some treatises with negligence to the great bulk of Muslim Heritage in Religionswissenschaft.

Södertörn University | School of Historical and Contemporary Studies Bachelor thesis 15 hp | Religious studies | Fall 2014 The program of Journalism target religious studies “Fight is an inside path” – A minor field study of how members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order perceive religious freedom in Mexico By: Sandra Forsvik Supervisor in Sweden: Simon Sorgenfrei Supervisor in Mexico: Israel Rojas Cámara Abstract The interests for academic studies of contemporary Sufism and Sufism in non-Islamic countries have become more popular, but little has been done in Latin America. The studies of Islam in this continent are limited and studies on Sufism in Mexico seem to be an unexplored area. As a student of journalism target religion I see this as an important topic that can generate new information for the study of Sufism. This thesis is therefore aimed to describe the group of Sufis I have chosen to study, Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order in Mexico, linked to Human Rights in form of how members of the Sufi order perceive Religious Freedom in Mexico. A minor field study was carried out in Colonia Roma, Mexico City during October and November 2014. The place was chosen because this is the place where Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order exists in Mexico. The investigation is qualitative and based on an ethnographic study of eight weeks and semi structured interviews with three dervishes of the Sufi order, where two of them are men and one is a woman. Based on my purpose I have formulated the following questions: – How do members of Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi

Abstract This article attempts to deliberate on the child custody laws in classical Islamic texts and the contemporary Muslim World with special focus on development of child custody laws in Pakistan. For classical Islamic law, the article refers to the laws as stated in the compendiums of fiqh of sunni and shi’ i schools of thought as well as decisions of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) his companions and leading Muslim jurists. For the purpose of this study, contemporary Muslim world is divided into Muslim majority regions of Central Asia and Caucasus, South Asia, Southeast Asia, North Africa, South Africa, West Africa, Horn of Africa and Middle East. A thorough analysis of customary practices, personal status laws and trends of courts in these Muslim majority regions is carried out. Effort is made to bring out similarities, differences and developments in child custody laws in contemporary Muslim world. • Title: Women of Agency: the Penned Thoughts of Bengali Muslim
Title: Women of Agency: The Penned Thoughts of Bengali Muslim Women Writers of 9th 20th the Late 1 and Early Century Submitted by: Irteza Binte-Farid In Fulfillment of the Feminist Studies Honors Program Date: June 3, 2013 introduction: With the prolusion of postcolornal literature and theory arising since the 1 9$Os. unearthing subaltern voices has become an admirable task that many respected scholars have undertaken. Especially in regards to South Asia, there has been a series of meticulouslyresearched and nuanced arguments about the role of the subaltern in contributing to the major annals of history that had previously been unrecorded, greatly enriching the study of the history of colonialism and imperialism in South Asia. 20th The case of Bengali Muslim women in India in the late l91 and early century has also proven to be a topic that has produced a great deal of recent literature. With a history of scholarly 19th texts, unearthing the voices of Hindu Bengali middle-class women of late and early 2O’ century, scholars felt that there was a lack of representation of the voices of Muslim Bengali middle-class women of the same time period. In order to counter the overwhelming invisibility of Muslim Bengali women in academic scholarship, scholars, such as Sonia Nishat Amin, tackled the difficult task of presenting the view of Muslim Bengali women. Not only do these new works fill the void of representing an entire community. they also break the persistent representation of Muslim women as ‘backward,’ within normative historical accounts by giving voice to their own views about education, religion, and society) However, any attempt to make ‘invisible’ histories ‘visible’ falls into a few difficulties.

  • Rebuilding Sufi Traditions in Nahdlatul Wathan Madrasas
Vol. 7 No. 1 (2020): 17-30 Received: 2020-02-21 Accepted: 2019-03-10 Published: 2020-04-30 Original Article Islamic Educational Tradition: Rebuilding Sufi Traditions in Nahdlatul Wathan Madrasas Prosmala Hadisaputraa*, Ahmad Bin Yussufa & Tengku Sarina Aini Binti Tengku Kasima a Islamic Education Program, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur * Prosmala Hadisaputra, email; [email protected] ABSTRACT This article discusses Sufi tradition as an Islamic educational tradition in the Nahdlatul Wathan (NW) madrassas. The article was examined through a literature review supported by interviews and analyzed through a sociological approach. We put the document as primary data, while the results of the interview as secondary data. These documents are works of Shaykh Zainuddin, founder of the NW organization, which houses around 1600 madrassas throughout Indonesia. In addition, we also used documents written by his students. As for the interviews, we carried out with three key informants. We concluded that Sufi rituals as the educational traditions in the NW madrassas are the original traditions of the Sufis which were rebuilt and modified both in terms of practice and material. The emergence of these traditions in two ways. Some of it arises through the bottom, which was traditions that occurred spontaneously, and partly arise through the above, namely a tradition that occurs utilizing being planned, promoted, and emphasized. The process of changing the old Sufi tradition into the NW version is in line with the formulation of the sociologist, Piotr Sztompka. He argues that changing tradition is a necessity, and human psychology always wants to realize its ideas.

  • The 21 Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain And
The 21st Century New Muslim Generation Converts in Britain and Germany Submitted by Caroline Neumueller to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Arab and Islamic Studies October 2012 1 2 Abstract The dissertation focuses on the conversion experiences and individual processes of twenty-four native British Muslim converts and fifty-two native German Muslim converts, based on personal interviews and completed questionnaires between 2008 and 2010. It analyses the occurring similarities and differences among British and German Muslim converts, and puts them into relation to basic Islamic requirements of the individual, and in the context of their respective social settings. Accordingly, the primary focus is placed on the changing behavioural norms in the individual process of religious conversion concerning family and mixed-gender relations and the converts’ attitudes towards particularly often sensitive and controversial topics. My empirical research on this phenomenon was guided by many research questions, such as: What has provoked the participants to convert to Islam, and what impact and influence does their conversion have on their (former and primarily) non-Muslim environment? Do Muslim converts tend to distance themselves from their former lifestyles and change their social behavioural patterns, and are the objectives and purposes that they see themselves having in the given society directed to them being: bridge-builders or isolators? The topic of conversion to Islam, particularly within Western non-Muslim societies is a growing research phenomenon. At the same time, there has only been little contribution to the literature that deals with comparative analyses of Muslim converts in different countries.
