Rally Sweden Hello. So, Snow. Except This Time the Story's About The
The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Sweden Hello. So, snow. Except this time the story’s about the snow’s Swedish no- snow. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions. -

FACTBOOK 2019 WRC FACTBOOK 2019 / PROGRADE PHOTO OF THE YEAR WRC FACTBOOK 2019 / INTRO WRC FACTBOOK 2019 The 2018 WRC season will be remembered as the most exciting and dramatic in a generation. It is 15 years since a drivers’ title fight of similar magnitude and a compelling season-long battle involving three drivers was finally resolved on the last morning of the season in Australia. It was a similar story in the manufacturers’ championship. All four teams won rallies and three made the long journey Down Under still with an opportunity to claim the crown. Following a similarly enthralling and unpredictable 2017 cam- paign, when new-era World Rally Cars headlined a raft of major changes to the championship, it is clear our sport is in the midst of an unforgettable period in its history. Away from the close competition, the WRC has grown in stature. The year opened with a major launch at Birmingham’s Autosport International show and finished with a glamorous end of season gala in Sydney and with the cars showcased once more in front of Milan’s iconic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo. Our pioneering WRC+ All Live channel revolutionised the way in which fans could enjoy the sport as it happened. Every special stage from each round was streamed live, featuring stunning onboard and helicopter footage. It was supplemented by expert analysis and reactions from across the service park – adding up to more than 325 hours of live coverage. Our traditional TV coverage thrived too. The WRC’s global audi- ence and the number of broadcast hours continue their positive trend of the last years. -

2017 Geoff Hall / Paul Bosdet : Photo Courtesy of Tony North Volume 8 : Issue 11 : November 2017 : Maurice Ellison Chairman's Chat For me October included trips to the Isle of Mull and North Wales (via Cheshire), one an enjoyable trip and one a little less so. On the Isle of Mull were the two events, which replaced the cancelled Mull Rally, and I marshalled on the Targa Rally and did my usual radio job on the Rally Time Trial. Both events were well organised given the short time available to achieve them and all the competitors and I enjoyed them. For more on these see my article on pages 23 to 30, “Isle of Mull October 17”. In Cheshire/Wales it was of course the WRGB when I controlled the recce for the Cholmondeley Castle stage on the Wednesday then spent three days based in the North Wales Regional Centre acting as a link between stag- es, the NW Regional Manager and Rally HQ in Deeside. Needless to say I never saw a competing car but then again that’s the usual case when controlling stages on the top of a mountain !! On a positive note, congratula- tions to Elfyn Evans &Daniel Barritt for winning the event, Sebastien Ogier & Julien Ingrassia for clinching the WRC Championship and, best of all, for M-Sport for taking the WRC Manufacturers title. On a negative note, sadly the event once again attracted some less savoury characters, those, spectators and even a media chap, hailing abuse or bottles at marshals or cars having had a few too many sherberts. -
Stars of the Stage
STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Right: Sébastien Ogier powers his Citroën to third in the 2019 Argentine Rally Rallying’s first World Champion proved that while sublime skill and dogged determination are both prerequisites for victory, ruthlessness Björn is not. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events. -

Rally Australia Showcases One of the Most Beautiful Regions of Australia
The Tunnock’s guide to… Coates Hire Rally Australia Welcome from Rally Australia organisers: Rally Australia showcases one of the most beautiful regions of Australia. Located between the Pacific Ocean and rainforest-clad mountains, the Coffs Coast enjoys a sub-tropical climate all year round; in particular, the spring weather in September will be delightfully warm. Tourism and rural industries, including cattle-raising, wine-making and the iconic banana plantations that cover the local hillsides underpin a vibrant economy. But for rally people, perhaps the immediate attraction is the sporting challenge of the Rally Australia roads. Competitors widely praised last year’s special stages. The 50-kilometre Nambucca stage was hailed as one of the best in the world and I’m pleased to confirm it remains in the 2015 itinerary. Yet we have listened to feedback in making further improvements. There are three new Friday stages in the Nambucca region that we believe are the most exciting we’ve offered on the Coffs Coast event – surpassing even the Nambucca stage itself – plus a traditional night stage in the countryside to close Saturday’s leg, a first for Rally Australia, and a new stage on Sunday. The new stages are fast, technical and set in beautiful forest and open country. The itinerary, based around the same Coffs Harbour Service Park, remains one of the most compact and efficient on the WRC calendar. Dates and data: FIA World Rally Championship round 10/13 WRC – WRC2 Date: September 10-13, 2015 Based: Coffs Harbour, New South Wales Service: -
Petter Solberg Is Widely Regarded As One of World RallyingS Ascendant Stars
Date of Birth: 18 November 1974 Place of Birth: Askim, Norway Lives: Spydeberg, Norway Marital status: Lives with Pernilla Walfridsson and son Oliver First rally: 1996 WRC debut: 1998 Sweden Hobbies: Cycling, squash, films Website: www.pettersolberg.com Career Highlights: 2000 Signed by Subaru World Rally Team 1998 Group A Norwegian Rally Champion 1997 Norwegian hillclimbing Champion 1996 Norwegian rallycross and hillclimbing Champion 1995 Norwegian rallycross and hillclimbing Champion Petter Solberg is widely regarded as one of world rallyings ascendant stars. He joined the Subaru World Rally Team in 2000, and the effervescent Norwegian looks set to follow in the footsteps of previous talented newcomers like Richard Burns and Colin McRae, who became World Champions with Subaru. A tough act to follow? Like last years team-mate and reigning World Champion Richard Burns, Petter started his driving career at the same age and in similar fashion. From eight years old he was driving cars on the fields around his parents farm in Spydeberg, 50 km east of Oslo. Petters parents were both keen rallycross drivers, and naturally Petter and his older brother Henning inherited their fascination with cars. The 11-year old Petter helped his parents build and maintain their autocross cars. Still far too young to compete himself, Petter raced radio-controlled cars and was Norwegian Champion at 13. Second race, first win His competition debut came in a round of the Norwegian Autocross Championship the day after he passed his driving test at the end of 1992. His second race took place the following year and he won! He quickly progressed from autocross to rallycross and then to hillclimbing, using a Ford Escort MK2 which his brother had given him. -
