Geoff Hall / Paul Bosdet : Photo Courtesy of Tony North 2017 Geoff Hall / Paul Bosdet : Photo Courtesy of Tony North Volume 8 : Issue 11 : November 2017 : Maurice Ellison Chairman's Chat For me October included trips to the Isle of Mull and North Wales (via Cheshire), one an enjoyable trip and one a little less so. On the Isle of Mull were the two events, which replaced the cancelled Mull Rally, and I marshalled on the Targa Rally and did my usual radio job on the Rally Time Trial. Both events were well organised given the short time available to achieve them and all the competitors and I enjoyed them. For more on these see my article on pages 23 to 30, “Isle of Mull October 17”. In Cheshire/Wales it was of course the WRGB when I controlled the recce for the Cholmondeley Castle stage on the Wednesday then spent three days based in the North Wales Regional Centre acting as a link between stag- es, the NW Regional Manager and Rally HQ in Deeside. Needless to say I never saw a competing car but then again that’s the usual case when controlling stages on the top of a mountain !! On a positive note, congratula- tions to Elfyn Evans &Daniel Barritt for winning the event, Sebastien Ogier & Julien Ingrassia for clinching the WRC Championship and, best of all, for M-Sport for taking the WRC Manufacturers title. On a negative note, sadly the event once again attracted some less savoury characters, those, spectators and even a media chap, hailing abuse or bottles at marshals or cars having had a few too many sherberts. As I said last year why don’t they just stay away and don’t ruin it for the vast majority of spectators who were well behaved. “ISLE OF MULL OCTOBER 17” The Beaton’s Mull Targa Rally – Friday 13th October The event took crews all around the island with a mixture of regularity sections interspersed with various tests and using both public roads and private land including some forest sections. It was good to see a 70 car entry list with a full mix of rally cars, historic and modern, to very basic family cars. When Derek Bedson and I arrived to sign on on the Thursday afternoon we were told most places had been filled so we should go to Regularity Section 2 (RS2) in the morning and Regularity Section 4 (RS4) in the afternoon and help wherever the section commander suggested. So on the Friday morning we arrived at the start of RS2 and due to a no show we were asked to man the finish of the section which we were happy to do. The section ran along a forest track which runs parallel to the Glen Aros Road but in most places it was fairly smooth and hard. Although we were well wrapped up against the weather it didn’t actually rain apart for a very brief spell. It was good to do something different from our usual radio jobs as we got to talk to the crews and it soon became apparent that the vast majority of the crews were thoroughly en- joying the event, typically shown when they arrived at the controls with broad grins on their faces. Obviously some had struggled to master the regularity timing (don’t ask me it’s probably nearly 40 years since I did one) but that didn’t seem to matter they were just having fun. One navigator said he had not had so much fun since he did road rallies back in the 80’s. After a bite of lunch we headed to Gribun Rocks for RS4 when again another no show resulted in us manning one of the intermediate controls right on the edge of the loch, a particularly windy spot but we still didn’t get wet. As you would expect from a rally there were a few less cars this time but once again the crews were still enjoying the event. One significant thing on both the sections we marshalled was that many of the crews thanked us for marshalling and we event got a sweetie for our trouble from one driver. It’s so good to hear this. Beaton’s Building Supplies Mornish Rally Time Trial – Saturday 14th October The trial took place on a forest track from near Calgary to the Hill Road above Dervaig and included a 3.1 mile ‘stage’. We were on Post 4, of 11, and for once had a reasonable view of part of the stage. Following a low speed recce run of the stage the 24 crews that started got 6 competitive runs through the stage apart from 2 crews who shared a car and each one missed a run or two due to the time for them to get round the public road back to the start. There were a couple of mechanical drop outs but there were no accidents. After Run 4 there was a lunch break and the Safety and Sweeper Cars delivered a burger to everyone who signed on, a great gesture by the organisers and the venison burgers were very tasty. Even after a couple of unforeseen delays the event finished by mid afternoon and again I believe everyone en- joyed the day. It was obviously a huge disappointment when the Mull Rally was cancelled but Saltire Rally Club and Mull Car Club along with the Guardians of Mull Rally put on two great events enjoyed by crews and marshals alike and with much more sociable hours compared to the Mull Rally ! Well done to all those involved in making these events happen in the short time available. Understandably the island was much quieter than usual this year but the locals I spoke to were all glad that so many people still came to the island. Let’s hope very soon that the re- port on the accident injury is published and with positive results such that it will be back to normal with the island buzzing with rally folk next year.     The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Sweden Hello. So, snow. Except this time the story’s about the snow’s Swedish no- snow. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions.

The WRC’s global audi- ence and the number of broadcast hours continue their positive trend of the last years.

    STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events.

Camping is available and toilets available but sorry no showers!! All competitors that are not competing and need to validate points for either QRC or Clubman this would be your perfect opportunity! Reminder that this year Rally HQ is at GYMPIE DUCK PONDS from 0900 - 1230 and then at GLADSTONBURY SHOWGROUNDS HALL between the hours of 1230 - 2330 on Saturday.

Este mes pasado hemos estado de viaje por Barcelona y Madrid cubriendo algunos eventos de mucha importancia tanto automovilística como “slotera”, así que en este número de abril os traemos los reportajes de sendos viajes que son por un lado el ya tradicional ForoSlot de Madrid y la concentración de clásicos en la 4ª edición del Espíritu de Montjuic en el circuito de Montmeló. Aparte en nuestra recién inaugurada sección de “a prueba” os mostramos uno de los duelos del momento. Hemos analizado el Aston Martin tanto de NSR como el del nuevo fabricante Black Arrow. Son unos coches que ya llevan un par de meses entre nosotros pero no podíamos dejar pasar la oportunidad de hacerles un análisis. Cruzamos los Pirineos para presentaros como nuestro gran piloto del mes a Didier Auriol, el primer francés que ganó un mundial de rallyes. Además nuestro colaborador Demoslot nos trae también un artículo muy interesante sobre el Pegaso Z 102 Berlinetta con unas fotos y una puesta en escena preciosas. Y finalmente pero no por ello menos importante hemos aprovechado el viaje a Montmeló para hacer también una visita a uno de nuestros patrocinadores, Aloyshop, que hace unos meses que estrenó un lavado de cara completo a su tienda y hemos decidido dedicarles un reportaje.
