  • Rally Sweden Hello. So, Snow. Except This Time the Story's About The
The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Sweden Hello. So, snow. Except this time the story’s about the snow’s Swedish no- snow. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions.

  • Mission Accomplished for Sordo and Marti
Acropolis Rally of Greece (11-14 June, 2009) – Day 3 Mission accomplished for Sordo and Marti After restarting under the SupeRally ruling for the third and final day of the 2009 Acropolis Rally of Greece, Dani Sordo and Marc Marti achieved their aims by scoring four points for Citroën in the Manufacturers’ world championship. Day 3 of the Acropolis Rally was held near the service park in Loutraki. The day began with a loop comprising three stages, including a run through Aghii Theodori, a daunting 33 km stage. After restarting in 17th position in the overall standings, the only goal for Dani Sordo and Marc Marti was to finish in order to score a handful of points for Citroën in the Manufacturers’ championship. Arriving in Loutraki for the midday service, Dani Sordo was fully focused on the job in hand: “It’s never easy to run at a controlled pace but I’m taking no risks. I’m staying in the middle of the road – at times, it feels like we’re doing a recce!” Following the cancellation of a stage, the rally concluded with a second run through Aghii Theodori. Running at the same pace, Dani finished in 12 th position, which is worth four points in the Manufacturers’ standings. “Dani and Marc did a perfect job,” concluded Citroën Total World Rally Team team manager Sven Smeets. “These points are even more important because our rivals once again took a maximum score. We’re already looking ahead to the next rally. We’ll be going to Rally Poland even hungrier for a win!” RALLY FACTS Dani Sordo / Marc Marti Stage Overall SS13 : Loutraki 1 (8,98 km) 3rd +1’’5 16 th +19’33’’0 SS14 : Aghii Theodori (33,00 km) 5th +10’’0 14 th +19’21’’1 SS15 : New Pissia (11,30 km) 2nd +0’’2 14 th +19’10’’7 SS16 : Loutraki 2 (8,98 km) SS CANCELLED SS17 : Aghii Theodori (33,00 km) 2nd +5’’3 12 th +18’41’’0 Stage wins Day 1 – SS1 : Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford Focus) – SS2 : Dani Sordo (Citroën C4) – SS3 : annulée – SS4 : Evgeny Novikov (Citroën C4) – SS5 : Sébastien Ogier (Citroën C4) – SS6 : Mikko Hirvonen (Ford Focus).

FACTBOOK 2019 WRC FACTBOOK 2019 / PROGRADE PHOTO OF THE YEAR WRC FACTBOOK 2019 / INTRO WRC FACTBOOK 2019 The 2018 WRC season will be remembered as the most exciting and dramatic in a generation. It is 15 years since a drivers’ title fight of similar magnitude and a compelling season-long battle involving three drivers was finally resolved on the last morning of the season in Australia. It was a similar story in the manufacturers’ championship. All four teams won rallies and three made the long journey Down Under still with an opportunity to claim the crown. Following a similarly enthralling and unpredictable 2017 cam- paign, when new-era World Rally Cars headlined a raft of major changes to the championship, it is clear our sport is in the midst of an unforgettable period in its history. Away from the close competition, the WRC has grown in stature. The year opened with a major launch at Birmingham’s Autosport International show and finished with a glamorous end of season gala in Sydney and with the cars showcased once more in front of Milan’s iconic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo. Our pioneering WRC+ All Live channel revolutionised the way in which fans could enjoy the sport as it happened. Every special stage from each round was streamed live, featuring stunning onboard and helicopter footage. It was supplemented by expert analysis and reactions from across the service park – adding up to more than 325 hours of live coverage. Our traditional TV coverage thrived too. The WRC’s global audi- ence and the number of broadcast hours continue their positive trend of the last years.

2017 Geoff Hall / Paul Bosdet : Photo Courtesy of Tony North Volume 8 : Issue 11 : November 2017 : Maurice Ellison Chairman's Chat For me October included trips to the Isle of Mull and North Wales (via Cheshire), one an enjoyable trip and one a little less so. On the Isle of Mull were the two events, which replaced the cancelled Mull Rally, and I marshalled on the Targa Rally and did my usual radio job on the Rally Time Trial. Both events were well organised given the short time available to achieve them and all the competitors and I enjoyed them. For more on these see my article on pages 23 to 30, “Isle of Mull October 17”. In Cheshire/Wales it was of course the WRGB when I controlled the recce for the Cholmondeley Castle stage on the Wednesday then spent three days based in the North Wales Regional Centre acting as a link between stag- es, the NW Regional Manager and Rally HQ in Deeside. Needless to say I never saw a competing car but then again that’s the usual case when controlling stages on the top of a mountain !! On a positive note, congratula- tions to Elfyn Evans &Daniel Barritt for winning the event, Sebastien Ogier & Julien Ingrassia for clinching the WRC Championship and, best of all, for M-Sport for taking the WRC Manufacturers title. On a negative note, sadly the event once again attracted some less savoury characters, those, spectators and even a media chap, hailing abuse or bottles at marshals or cars having had a few too many sherberts.

  • Stars of the Stage
STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Right: Sébastien Ogier powers his Citroën to third in the 2019 Argentine Rally Rallying’s first World Champion proved that while sublime skill and dogged determination are both prerequisites for victory, ruthlessness Björn is not. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events.

  • Four Aces in the Pack for the Citroën Junior Team
Rally of Great Britain (22-25 October 2009) – Preview Four aces in the pack for the Citroën Junior Team For the first time the Citroën Junior Team will enter four Citroën C4 WRCs on the Rally Great Britain: the final round of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship. The regular Citroën Junior Team crews of Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia and Conrad Rautenbach/Daniel Barritt will be joined on this occasion by Petter Solberg/Phil Mills and Aaron Burkart/Michael Kölbach. Three weeks after a first-rate performance on the rapid asphalt of Catalunya, the Citroën Junior Team will field four C4 WRCs on the all-gravel Rally Great Britain. Petter Solberg, who was fourth in Spain on his debut with the C4 WRC, joins the Citroën Junior Team and is nominated to score points in the manufacturers’ championship. The 2003 World Rally Champion has triumphed in Wales four times, and he starts this year’s event with high hopes. “The Citroën Junior Team has given me a great chance to show what I can do with a competitive car,” he said. “My goal is obviously to be fighting at the front. I’ve already been extremely impressed with the performance of the C4 WRC and I hope to be able to seize every opportunity that comes my way on these stages that I really love.” Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia, who currently lie eighth in the World Rally Championship, are returning to the event where they made their debut at the wheel of the C4 WRC in 2008.
