Rally Sweden Hello. So, Snow. Except This Time the Story's About The
The Loudon-clear guide to… Rally Sweden Hello. So, snow. Except this time the story’s about the snow’s Swedish no- snow. It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions. -

Racing Families – the Andrettis Hello and Welcome to a Brand New Episode in the Racing Families Mini-Series from Sidepodcast
Racing Families – The Andrettis Hello and welcome to a brand new episode in the Racing Families mini-series from Sidepodcast. As you may expect we’re looking at the great and the good from the world of motorsport, but particularly those that are keeping it in the family. Today, it’s time for a sprawling family legacy, and the name? Andretti. You’ve probably heard of Mario Andretti. He’s tried his hand at pretty much every type of racing there is on four wheels, and been largely successful too. The 73 year old American is now, naturally, retired, but in his sporting career he added to a long list of titles, and broke far too many records to mention. Mario was F1 World Champion in 1978, driving for Team Lotus, having joined the sport ten years earlier. Before that, in 1969, he won the Indy 500, which he continued to participate in for 29 years altogether. After his F1 stint, with a little bit of a crossover, he appeared in the CART series, winning that championship in 1984. He’s also tried his hand at NASCAR and the Le Mans 24 Hour race, with his best finish an overall second place. With this kind of DNA, it’s hardly surprising that the Andretti family are one of the more extensive in racing. Mario Andretti has a twin brother called Aldo, and in their very early days of racing, they built up a stock car together and took turns behind the wheel. They continued racing for about ten years, between 1959 and 69, but after two serious accidents, Aldo gave it up. -

FACTBOOK 2019 WRC FACTBOOK 2019 / PROGRADE PHOTO OF THE YEAR WRC FACTBOOK 2019 / INTRO WRC FACTBOOK 2019 The 2018 WRC season will be remembered as the most exciting and dramatic in a generation. It is 15 years since a drivers’ title fight of similar magnitude and a compelling season-long battle involving three drivers was finally resolved on the last morning of the season in Australia. It was a similar story in the manufacturers’ championship. All four teams won rallies and three made the long journey Down Under still with an opportunity to claim the crown. Following a similarly enthralling and unpredictable 2017 cam- paign, when new-era World Rally Cars headlined a raft of major changes to the championship, it is clear our sport is in the midst of an unforgettable period in its history. Away from the close competition, the WRC has grown in stature. The year opened with a major launch at Birmingham’s Autosport International show and finished with a glamorous end of season gala in Sydney and with the cars showcased once more in front of Milan’s iconic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo. Our pioneering WRC+ All Live channel revolutionised the way in which fans could enjoy the sport as it happened. Every special stage from each round was streamed live, featuring stunning onboard and helicopter footage. It was supplemented by expert analysis and reactions from across the service park – adding up to more than 325 hours of live coverage. Our traditional TV coverage thrived too. The WRC’s global audi- ence and the number of broadcast hours continue their positive trend of the last years. -

2017 Geoff Hall / Paul Bosdet : Photo Courtesy of Tony North Volume 8 : Issue 11 : November 2017 : Maurice Ellison Chairman's Chat For me October included trips to the Isle of Mull and North Wales (via Cheshire), one an enjoyable trip and one a little less so. On the Isle of Mull were the two events, which replaced the cancelled Mull Rally, and I marshalled on the Targa Rally and did my usual radio job on the Rally Time Trial. Both events were well organised given the short time available to achieve them and all the competitors and I enjoyed them. For more on these see my article on pages 23 to 30, “Isle of Mull October 17”. In Cheshire/Wales it was of course the WRGB when I controlled the recce for the Cholmondeley Castle stage on the Wednesday then spent three days based in the North Wales Regional Centre acting as a link between stag- es, the NW Regional Manager and Rally HQ in Deeside. Needless to say I never saw a competing car but then again that’s the usual case when controlling stages on the top of a mountain !! On a positive note, congratula- tions to Elfyn Evans &Daniel Barritt for winning the event, Sebastien Ogier & Julien Ingrassia for clinching the WRC Championship and, best of all, for M-Sport for taking the WRC Manufacturers title. On a negative note, sadly the event once again attracted some less savoury characters, those, spectators and even a media chap, hailing abuse or bottles at marshals or cars having had a few too many sherberts. -
Stars of the Stage
STARS OF THE STAGE When the World Rally Championship first began in 1973, only the car manufacturers fought for a crown; it wasn’t until 1979 that the drivers were recognised with their own world title. They soon made up for lost time, however, and over the past four decades the WRC has been a constant source of drama, heroism and displays of unbelievable skill. So as the Festival celebrates 40 years of the World Rally Drivers’ Championship this weekend, we remember some of those who have fought for and won the sport’s greatest prize STORY BY ANGUS FRAZER Left: Petter Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills celebrate victory in the 2002 Rally GB. Right: Sébastien Ogier powers his Citroën to third in the 2019 Argentine Rally Rallying’s first World Champion proved that while sublime skill and dogged determination are both prerequisites for victory, ruthlessness Björn is not. Described by those who knew him as a true gentleman (and sometimes as a teddy bear), the late Björn Waldegård won the inaugural World Rally Drivers’ Championship in 1979 (prior to that, the competition had Waldegård been held for two years as an FIA ‘Cup for Drivers’, won by Sandro Munari in 1977 and Markku Alén in 1978). All through that season, Waldegård battled Hannu Mikkola, his team-mate not just at Ford in the pace-setting Escort RS but also at Mercedes-Benz. The German company had 1979 hired the duo to pilot the powerful if unwieldy 5.0-litre V8 automatic 450SLC Coupé on the Safari and Ivory Coast events. -
Racing Families – Series 1 Omnibus the Rosbergs
Racing Families – Series 1 Omnibus The Rosbergs Hello and welcome to a Brand new mini-series From Sidepodcast - Racing Families. As you may expect we’ll be taking a look at the great and the good From the world oF motorsport, But particularly those that are keeping it in the family. I’m always intrigued By fathers, sons, Brothers and cousins, all carrying on the family name, and if you’re the same, then this is the mini series For you. We’ll cover seven diFFerent Families over the course oF a week with a short show each day, and today we are starting with... Rosberg. Of the current crop oF Formula One racers, one of the biggest Family names is Rosberg. Nico Rosberg drives For Mercedes, and has done so For the previous three seasons. BeFore that he was with the Williams team, with whom he made his F1 debut. Rosberg races as a German but he has dual nationality with both Germany and Finland. His mother is German, and his Father is the Finnish Formula One driver Keke RosBerg. Keke was the First Full-time Finnish F1 driver, joining the series in 1978. He had worked his way through various junior formulae beFore being signed to the Theodore F1 team. The early results weren’t promising due to the aBility of the car, but Rosberg outdrove his machinery and raised eyebrows at the bigger teams. In 1982, he was signed to the Williams outfit, where he started picking up regular podium finishes. 1982 was a diFFicult season, Full oF politics Both in the sport and within team and driver relationships.
