However, she also wrote other, lesser known short prose texts about Jerusalem. These texts introduce Jerusalem to a Swedish public, and in them Jerusalem also serves as an exotic place that can be juxtaposed with a Swedish national identity; thus promoting a notion of Swedishness. The Jerusalem constructed in these texts also functions as a code to Christian cultures. The main questions posed in this chapter concern how the Jerusalem code plays out in these texts, more precisely how the concept of the “Holy Land” can be interpreted in them. Moreover, the question of how religious faith plays into the national discourse is explored. At the peak of the Swedish migration to the West (North America), Selma Lagerlöf (1858–1940) wrote a novel about migration in the opposite direction, to the East (Fig. 22.1).1 In her novel Jerusalem (1901–1902), a group of farmers from the region of Dalarna is motivated not by the economic reasons common to migrants to the West, but by another shared reason: the longing for freedom, in this case religious freedom, more precisely, a longing for the heavenly Jerusalem.

  • Time, Elements and the Phoenix Hour in Lives and Poetry of Nobel Laureates and Their Celestial Twins
Time, Elements and the Phoenix Hour in Lives and Poetry of Nobel Laureates and their Celestial Twins. Elizabetha Levin Haifa, Israel E-mail: [email protected] We see that human creativity and innovation can be understood as the amplification of laws of nature… Ilya Prigogine {NL, Air} Abstract. In our times both the works and the biographies of the Nobel laureates {NL} are accessible to empirical study. Their biographic materials portray distinguished personalities as real people with their faults and weaknesses. Such biographic studies become available mainly because in our epoch the quality and quantity of psychological observation have increased dramatically. By opening the books of their own life stories, the Nobel laureates invite us to witness the circumstances of their growth and to gain a better understanding of the limits of free will and of "Zeitgeist" dynamics. Assuming that poetry is an even more valuable source of authors' attitudes towards life than their respective autobiographies, the Nobel laureates in Literature who were awarded their prizes explicitly for poetry, constitute the most informative group for biographical research. Furthermore, according to Alfred Nobel's will (1895), the poetry of the laureates should be also "the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." The ability of such laureates to inspire entire societies makes them attractive for historical research. This paper is a pioneer venture into temporology. It seamlessly blends three different types of time: calendar times, the primordial cycles of the elements and the factor of birth-time (the Theta-factor). To make this fusion possible, this essay opens with a brief Introduction written in four parts, each part being a thumbnail sketch of one of the following basic temporal aspects: definitions of time, the four elements, the Effect of the Celestial Twins (ECT) and the model of the Phoenix Clock.

Kvinnliga svenska sja¨lvbiografier fra˚n Agneta Horn till Fredrika Bremer (Litteratur Teater Film, Nya serien, 13), Lund U.P., 1996, 448 pp., is an impressive study of Swedish women’s autobiographies from the period 1647–1856 and the Swedish history of the genre. The aim has been to portray women’s views on themselves, their world, their writings, and the female writer, using some of the material in the 1991 bibliography that lists women’s autobiographies and diaries in the years 1650–1989 (no. 6 of the same series). The main focus is on Agneta Horn, Queen Kristina, and Fredrika Bremer, and reference is made to international research into language and fiction, genre, text, and the self. Less space is devoted to female religious autobiographers; mention is made of Jesper Swedberg, Hedvig Charlotta Nordenflycht, P. D. A. Atterbom, and Malla Silfverstolpe. Christina Sjo¨blad, Min vandring dag fo¨r dag. Kvinnliga dagbo¨cker fra˚n 1700-talet (Litteratur Teater Film, Nya serien, 16), Lund U.P.–Carlssons, 384 pp., is another study within the same project; here the focus is on the diaries, or journals, of a handful of Swedish 18th-c. women in a general European context; future plans include the diary genre in the 19th c. After introductory surveys of the European diary and early diary writing in Sweden, four representative female journals are explored against the ideological background of women’s status at the time, namely those of Metta Lillie (1737–50), Christina Charlotta Hia¨rne (1744–1803), Queen Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotta (1775–1817), and ‘A˚ rstafrun’, Ma¨rta Helena Reenstierna (1793–1839).

The Nobel Prize instituted on the lines of its mentor and founder Alfred Nobel's last will to establish a series of prizes for those who confer the “greatest benefit on mankind’ is widely regarded as the most coveted international award given in recognition to excellent work done in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. The Prize since its introduction in 1901 has a very impressive list of winners and each of them has their own story of success. It is heartening that a seminar is being organized annually focusing on the Nobel Prize winning work of the Nobel laureates of that particular year. The initiative is indeed laudable as it will help teachers as well as students a lot in knowing more about the works of illustrious recipients and drawing inspiration to excel and work for the betterment of mankind. I am sure the proceeding to be brought out on the occasion will be highly enlightening.
