4 49 “KYRENIA SHIP”

In 1965 a Cypriot diver, Andreas Kariolou, accidentally discovered in the depths of the sea outside of the town of Kyrenia (in Cyprus) the trails of a unique relic of antiquity, a ship that later became known as the “Kyrenia Ship”.

The Kyrenia Ship was built in the early 4th century B.C. and sank approximately between 300 B.C. The importance of the Kyrenia Ship is significant, as it is the oldest Greek vessel ever discovered and the most-preserved ship of the Classical period of Greek civilization ever found to date. It is important to note that 75% of the ship, which measures 14,75 meters in length, has been preserved as it was safeguarded under a protective layer of sand. Amongst the cargo recovered were 400 amphorae used for wine carrying and for the storage of almonds. Furthermore, a number of querns were found (possibly being carried as ballasts) as well as bronze coins.

The hauling up procedure of the ship and all of its findings began in 1967 and continued for 5 years thereafter. The necessary repairs were made and since then, the ship and its findings have been displayed at the Castle of Kyrenia which is presently occupied by Turkey.
