Conclusion _____________________________________________________ 17 References _________________________________________________________ 21 ii Europeanisation and 'Internalised' Conflicts: The Case of Cyprus George Kyris # ABSTRACT This article investigates the role of the EU in conflict resolution, taking Cyprus as a case of an 'internalised' conflict, whereby a side of the dispute has become a member state (Greek-Cypriots), while the rest of actors (Turkey, Turkish Cypriots) remain outside but are still developing relations to the EU. In exploring the impact of the EU on Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot and Turkish policies towards the dispute, this work engages with the Europeanisation debate. The argument advanced is that internalisation of the conflict limits the ability of the EU to act in the dispute and triggers inflexible policies, which are counterproductive to resolution. This work contributes to the Europeanisation discussion and the impact of the EU on domestic policies, especially in conflict situations. With a series of conflicts in the European periphery but also disputes within the EU (e.g. separatists tensions), this is an important contribution to the understudied topic of 'internalised conflicts'. -

Female Property Ownership and Status in Classical and Hellenistic Sparta Stephen Hodkinson University of Manchester 1. Introduction The image of the liberated Spartiate woman, exempt from (at least some of) the social and behavioral controls which circumscribed the lives of her counterparts in other Greek poleis, has excited or horrified the imagination of commentators both ancient and modern.1 This image of liberation has sometimes carried with it the idea that women in Sparta exercised an unaccustomed influence over both domestic and political affairs.2 The source of that influence is ascribed by certain ancient writers, such as Euripides (Andromache 147-53, 211) and Aristotle (Politics 1269b12-1270a34), to female control over significant amounts of property. The male-centered perspectives of ancient writers, along with the well-known phenomenon of the “Spartan mirage” (the compound of distorted reality and sheer imaginative fiction regarding the character of Spartan society which is reflected in our overwhelmingly non-Spartan sources) mean that we must treat ancient images of women with caution. Nevertheless, ancient perceptions of their position as significant holders of property have been affirmed in recent modern studies.3 The issue at the heart of my paper is to what extent female property-holding really did translate into enhanced status and influence. In Sections 2-4 of this paper I shall approach this question from three main angles. What was the status of female possession of property, and what power did women have directly to manage and make use of their property? What impact did actual or potential ownership of property by Spartiate women have upon their status and influence? And what role did female property-ownership and status, as a collective phenomenon, play within the crisis of Spartiate society? First, however, in view of the inter-disciplinary audience of this volume, it is necessary to a give a brief outline of the historical context of my discussion. -

The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC. -

HIRAM OF TYRE AND SOLOMON Edward Lipiński University of Leuven Josephus Flavius took a particular interest in the relations between Hiram, king of Tyre, and Solomon. Describing their friendly relation- ship, maintained on a basis of equality, Josephus undoubtedly aimed at underscoring the importance of Solomon in the eyes of his non- Jewish readers, he was addressing in Jewish Antiquities, followed soon by Against Apion. 1. Josephus and His Sources The sources of Josephus were not only the biblical Books of Kings and the Books of the Chronicles, but also some Hellenistic historiogra- phers of the 2nd c. BCE, like Menander of Ephesus, Dius, and Eupo- lemus. Menander and Dius quote translated extracts from the Tyrian annals, while Eupolemus’ work contains letters allegedly exchanged between Hiram and Solomon. Although the writings of Menander and Dius were no primary sources, they were works independent from the Bible and, in consequence, had more appeal for the heathen readers of Josephus. They are unfortunately lost, and the quotations from both authors preserved by Josephus have most likely been excerpted from the History of Phoenicia compiled ca. 70–60 BCE by Alexander Polyhistor,1 who had copied large passages from his predecessors’ writ- ings. Josephus stresses the importance of the Hiram-Solomon relation- ship in his Jewish Antiquities and in the somewhat later booklet Against 1 Alexander Polyhistor, a native of Miletus, an ancient city on the Anatolian shore of the Aegean Sea, compiled excerpts from several Hellenistic historiographers, related to Phoenicia. LXXIV, Z. 1, 2021, (s. 197–199) DOI 10.24425/ro.2021.137251 Recenzje / Reviews Hélène Le Meaux and Françoise Briquel Chatonnet, Le sarcophage d’Eshmunazor (Collection SOLO 72), Éditions El-Viso, Paris 2019, 56 pp. The anthropoid sarcophagus of Eshmunazor II, son of Tabnit I, kings of Sidon, was discovered in 1855 in the necropolis Magharat Ablūn, south-east of Saida (Sidon), and it is now in the Marengo crypt of the Louvre Museum. The booklet under review offers photographs and a study of the sarcophagus with its perfectly preserved Phoenician inscription. Its copy is presented according to the Corpus Inscriptionum Semiticarum I, pl. III; it is followed by a transliteration and a translation of this historically important text. The discovery of the anthropoid sarcophagus of Tabnit I in 1887 increased scholarly attention to Eshmunasor’s sarcophagus and its inscription, for it became clear that the death of the young king was unexpected and sudden. This explains why Tabnit was buried in a sarcophagus prepared for the Egyptian general Penptah, as indicated by the hieroglyphic epitaph, while his first and unique son Eshmunazor was born after Tabnit’s death. The most likely explanation is that Tabnit was killed or deadly wounded at the battle of Salamis in 480 B.C., where he commanded the Sidonian war ships belonging to Xerxes’ fleet. At first Xerxes was victorious everywhere, but his attack of the Greek fleet under unfavourable conditions at Salamis ended on September 28 in a disastrous defeat of the Persian fleet, composed largely of Phoenician war ships, the Sidonian fleet being the most important one. -

Dr. J. Paul Tanner Old Testament III Ezek 26–28: Tyre Oracles SESSION SEVENTEEN THE "TYRE ORACLES" OF EZEKIEL Ezekiel 26–28 I. THE INTERPRETATIVE PROBLEM Chapters 26–28 of Ezekiel, dealing with the oracle against Tyre, occur in the context of chapters 25– 32 in what is often referred to as the "doom oracles." In this series of oracles, God speaks judgment against several neighboring nations of Israel. One people group that receives extended treatment is the city of Tyre (26–28). The concluding chapter to this segment (ch 28) singles out the leader(s) of Tyre for special condemnation. The one who is addressed as the “king of Tyre” in 28:11-19 has received particular attention because of the many superhuman things said of him. Various solutions have been proposed: (1) Ezekiel was describing Tyre's human king who served as the representative (a "guardian cherub") for Tyre's patron deity Mekart;1 (2) Ezekiel was describing the pagan "god" behind the king of Tyre and who empowered the human king (possibly Baal); (3) Ezekiel was describing Tyre's king, Ethbaal in highly poetic language, comparing him with Adam (so Merrill2); and (4) Ezekiel was actually referring to Satan (several conservative interpreters including Chafer, Feinberg, and Ryrie take this view). Most all admit that this is one of the more difficult passages in the OT to interpret, and the problem is compounded by the fact that the figure in view is never designated specifically by name in the text. Yet this is not a moot question, because the answer we give to this has a bearing on our theology of Satan. -

Kapera THE JEWISH PRESENCE IN CYPRUS BEFORE AD 70 In the time of Sergius Paulus (Acts 13, 7), Cyprus was inhabited by indigenous Cypriots, Greeks (from Greece and Egypt), Phoenicians, some Romans (few in comparison with other groups), and a large community of Jews. What is surprising is the almost total absence of Greek (or Aramaic) synagogue inscriptions, especially since we know from the Acts of the Apostles and other sources that a substantial group of people of Jewish origin was living on the island.1 G. Hill2 and T. B. Mitford3 suggested some decades ago that the first Jews settled in Cyprus in the time of Ptolemy Philadelphus. According to the Talmudic sources, they were very probably obliged to supply wine annually for the services in the Jerusalem Temple.4 However, today we are able to date the first Jewish settlers as early as the fourth century BC. Found in ancient Kition were three Phoenician inscriptions with evidently Jewish names: Haggai, son of Azariah, and Asaphyahu.5 Commercial contacts are later confirmed by finds of Hasmonaean coins in Nea Paphos.6 The first epigraphical proof is provided by a Greek inscription from Kourion of a late Hellenistic date, where a Jew named Onias is mentioned.7 The next attestation of Jews, also of the late Hellenistic or early Roman period, comes from a text dealing with permanent habitation of Jews in Amathus. According to Mitford the text seems to concern “the construction in cedar wood of the doorway of a synagogue” in that city.8 If the Jews built a synagogue, they had a community there.
