  • APPENDIX 1 a Full Text of the Interview with Gauri Deshpande Who Was A
APPENDIX 1 A full text of the interview with Gauri Deshpande who was a sub-editor of the weekly for nearly two years during the seventies. R. S.: How did you get into The Weekly' ? G. D.: I was offered the job by Mr. Khushwant Singh who liked m«y published work and met me in Pune where he was giving some lectures. He first asked me to do some freelance work for him and then offered me the job when he approved of that too. R.S.: was there any definite policy for the fiction section of "The Weekly' ? What was it ? How was it different from the preceding policy ? B.D.: As far as I could judge the "policy" depended entirely on the editor's taste. The sub-editor had the right of refusal but not of acceptance. The final selection was made by the editor. He seemed to like well - written, "clever" stories; he also liked "discovering" people (e.g. me II) R.S.: 'The Weekly' was not a fictional magazine. Even then almost all the issues of the periodical had stories and poems. How did it fit into the general scheme of the magazine ? G.D.: The general endeavour of the editor was to 298 make 'The Weekly' into a brighter, more popular, more accessible paper; less 'colonial' if one can say that. The changes he made in typography, layout, covers, photographs, even payment scales, all point to this. The often controversial themes of his main photo features (e.g. communities of india) and the bright new look fiction were part of the general policy.

  • Rig Veda Samhita
V.Madhurima Here are a few articles written by me on some aspects of vedism. The six systems of Indian Philosophy Salient features of Vedic Literature Sign Guestbook V.Madhurima I Introduction Man’s glory is not in what he is but in what he makes possible by the study of himself and nature [1]. Philosophy is defined as the study of elements, powers, or causes and laws that explain the facts and existences [2]. Philosophy is subjected to the influence of the race and culture [5] and the practice of religion is nothing but a quest for the facts of inner life [6]. In India philosophy and life are inter- linked and helped to withstand numerous external invasions and internal disturbances [3]. Except for Charvakas who believed that materialistic gains lead to salvation, there was no place for materialistic gains in the Indian thought. Philosophy in India deals with both the cleansing of body and mind a concept well known to Indians. Indeed philosophy in India is Aatma vidya, knowledge of the self and "Aatmaanam Viddhi", know the self, sums up the Indian thought [3]. Although Indian philosophy (Darshana, to see) uses reasoning extensively yet it believes that intuition is the only way by which the ultimate truth can be known because in Indian philosophy truth is not known but realised. Acceptance of Vedas as source of ultimate knowledge, intuition and inference unifies the various philosophical schools of India. Although all schools use words like avidya, maya, purusha and jiva, their interpretation is given differently [6]. Another common feature of the different schools is in their non-acceptance of the Buddhist philosophy.

  • Jnanpith Award
Jnanpith Award JNANPITH AWARD The Jnanpith Award is an Indian literary award presented annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature". Instituted in 1961, the award is bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India and English, with no posthumous conferral. The Bharatiya Jnanpith, a research and cultural institute founded in 1944 by industrialist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain, conceived an idea in May 1961 to start a scheme "commanding national prestige and of international standard" to "select the best book out of the publications in Indian languages". The first recipient of the award was the Malayalam writer G. Sankara Kurup who received the award in 1965 for his collection of poems, Odakkuzhal (The Bamboo Flute), published in 1950. In 1976, Bengali novelist Ashapoorna Devi became the first woman to win the award and was honoured for the 1965 novel Pratham Pratisruti (The First Promise), the first in a trilogy.
