    NATIONAL AWARDS JNANPITH AWARD he Jnanpith Award, instituted on May 22, 1961, is given for the best creative literary T writing by any Indian citizen in any of the languages included in the VIII schedule of the Constitution of India. The use of this notion in actual legal practice, gathered from various judgments, provides a glimpse of the current debates in India that address the relationships between humans and animals. Judgments explicitly mentioning ‘compassion’ cover diverse issues, concerning stray dogs, trespassing cattle, birds in cages, bull races, cart-horses, animal sacrifice, etc. They often juxtapose a discourse on compassion as an emotional and moral attitude, and a discourse about legal rights, essentially the right not to suffer unnecessary pain at the hands of humans (according to formulae that bear the imprint of British utilitarianism). In these judgments, various religious founding figures such as the Buddha, Mahavira, etc., are paid due tribute, perhaps not so much in reference to their religion, but rather as historical icons—on the same footing as Mahatma Gandhi—of an idealized intrinsic Indian compassion.     FACULTY OF ARTS, UNIVERSITY OF JAFFNA Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE PROGRAM Structure of the Degree programme 1.0 Introduction In accordance with the re-structuring of existing External Degree Program as per the Commission Circular no 932, Faculty of Arts, University of Jaffna, proposing a new structure, incorporating the provisions of the credit valued system. The new regulations shall be effective for the new entrants of the forthcoming academic year 2011/2012 onwards. 2.0 Structure of study program All study programs have designed to suit the semester based course unit system and Grade Point Average (GPA) evaluation and marking scheme. 2.1 Degrees The Faculty of Arts offers the following Degree programs. 2.1.1 B.A general Degree program of 03 years duration. (SLQF level – 05) 2.1.2 B.A special degree program of 04 years duration. (SLQF level – 06) The General Degree program offers a minimum of 90 credits, to be completed within a period of 03 years. (06 semesters of 20 weeks duration including examination period), with provision to extend up to a maximum of 06 years, depending on the students choice.     Megastar: Chiranjeevi and Telugu Cinema After N T Ramo Rao/ S.V

    After NTR Telugu Mass Film and Cinematic Populism Tn the previous chapter, I discussed the critical importance of the •J. social history of the cinema hall. Now I will focus on films, which are, after all, the reason why the populace gathers before the screen. In my examination of the films of Chiranjeevi, I will ask if there is anything at all in these films that can give us insights into the 'excessive' responses we encountered in the previous chapter. While I have suggested that these responses are usefully located as cinephiliac, the task of demonstrating their relationship to the screen remains. In this chapter and the rest of the book, I examine the Telugu film 'genre' locally known as the mass film, which was, by far, the most influential and economically important genre in the Telugu film industry in the 1980s and 1990s. Chiranjeevi is closely identified with the mass film but all other major Telugu stars of his generation featured in films of this genre. The mass film is useful for opening up the question of how the cinema may be political. This question will be an important focus of my discussion of the genre. Furthermore, in the mid-1990s the mass film and its stars became a part of a major crisis in the Telugu film industry. The crisis was, in part, a result of the collapse of the mass film, as also its past success. The examination of the mass film allows us to see how populism and blockage dovetail and in turn implicate Telugu cinema's superstars.
