Vol. 3 No. 3 January 2016 ISSN: 2321 – 788X MAHARAJA SERFOJI II -THE FAMOUS THANJAVUR MARATHA KING Dr. S. Vanajakumari Associate Professor, Department of History, Sri Meenakshi Govt. College (W), Madurai- 625 002 Abstract The place of Thanjavur in Tamilnadu (South India) has a long past history, fertile region and capital of many kingdoms. Thanjavur was a part of the kingdom of the Sangam Cholas. Later Thanjavur was ruled by the Kalabhras, the Pallavas and the Imperial Cholas. Then it was for a short period under the rule of the Pandyas and Vijayanagar Kings who appointed Sevappa Nayak as a viceroy of Thanjavur. Keywords: Thanjavur, Sangam, Kalabhras, Pandyas, Vijayanagar, Pallavas, Marathas, Chattrapathy Shivaji Establishment of Marathas power in Thanjavur Sevappa Nayak (1532-1560) was the founder of Thanjavur Nayak dynasty.1 Vijayaraghava (1634-1674) the last king of this dynasty, lost his life in a battle with Chokkanatha Nayak of Madurai in the year 1662. The Madurai Nayak appointed Alagiri, as the Governor of Thanjavur. This was followed by a long civil war in the Thanjavur kingdom. Alagiri wanted to rule independently and it restrained the relationship between Alagiri and Chokkanatha Nayak. Sengamaladas was the infant son of Vijayaraghava. Venkanna the Rayasam of Vijayaragava desired to make Sengamaladas as the Nayak of Thanjavur and sought the help of Bijapur Sultan who send Ekoji alias Venkogi to capture Thanjavur. He defeated Alagiri and crowned Sengamaladas. But, Venkanna did not get any benefit from Sengamaladas. So he induced Ekoji to usurp the power and got victory. Thus, in 1676 Ekoji established Maratha rule in the Tamil country.

India is renowned in producing students of high calibre and it is necessary that our aspiring students are able to pursue the right education. As we are all aware that engineering education is gaining new heights and contributes a substantial share in the overall education system, the youngsters pursuing engineering studies need to be well equipped and updated with the latest technological trends and industrial requirements. This is possible only when the students undergo studies with an updated and evolving curriculum to match global scenario. I congratulate AICTE for developing a model curriculum with the help of academic and industry experts for various disciplines of Undergraduate Degree courses in Engineering & Technology which will be available for Universities and Institutions. This adoption will be advantageous for the students to enhance their skills and employability. Introduction of mandatory Induction program for students belonging to diverse backgrounds to adjust themselves in the new environment of Engineering degree courses is praise worthy. • An Indian Summer: Corruption, Class, and the Lokpal Protests

The Author(s) 2013 An Indian summer: Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav Corruption, class, and DOI: 10.1177/1469540513498614 the Lokpal protests joc.sagepub.com Aalok Khandekar Department of Technology and Society Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University, The Netherlands Deepa S Reddy Anthropology and Cross-Cultural Studies, University of Houston-Clear Lake, USA and Human Factors International Abstract In the summer of 2011, in the wake of some of India’s worst corruption scandals, a civil society group calling itself India Against Corruption was mobilizing unprecedented nation- wide support for the passage of a strong Jan Lokpal (Citizen’s Ombudsman) Bill by the Indian Parliament. The movement was, on its face, unusual: its figurehead, the 75-year- old Gandhian, Anna Hazare, was apparently rallying urban, middle-class professionals and youth in great numbers—a group otherwise notorious for its political apathy. The scale of the protests, of the scandals spurring them, and the intensity of media attention generated nothing short of a spectacle: the sense, if not the reality, of a united India Against Corruption. Against this background, we ask: what shared imagination of cor- ruption and political dysfunction, and what political ends are projected in the Lokpal protests? What are the class practices gathered under the ‘‘middle-class’’ rubric, and how do these characterize the unusual politics of summer 2011? Wholly permeated by routine habits of consumption, we argue that the Lokpal protests are fundamentally structured by the impulse to remake social relations in the image of products and ‘‘India’’ itself into a trusted brand.
