Accepted 29 September, 2011 An attempt was made to divide the Suru-Zanskar Valley of Ladakh division into agro-ecological zones in order to have an understanding of the cropping system that may be suitably adopted in such a high altitude region. For delineation of the Suru-Zanskar valley into agro-ecological zones bio-physical attributes of land such as elevation, climate, moisture adequacy index, soil texture, soil temperature, soil water holding capacity, slope, vegetation and agricultural productivity have been taken into consideration. The agricultural productivity of the valley has been worked out according to Bhatia’s (1967) productivity method and moisture adequacy index has been estimated on the basis of Subrmmanyam’s (1963) model. The land use zone map has been superimposed on moisture adequacy index, soil texture and soil temperature, soil water holding capacity, slope, vegetation and agricultural productivity zones to carve out different agro-ecological boundaries. The five agro-ecological zones were obtained. Key words: Agro-ecology, Suru-Zanskar, climatic water balance, moisture index. Sri G.S. Pathak- A Tribute* His Excellency Shri R. Venkataraman President of India It gives me great pleasure to visit the historic precincts of the Allahabad High Court to unveil the portrait of one of the noblest sons of India, the late Sri Gopal Swarup Pathak. I would like at the outset to extend my thanks to Shri Justice Jeevana Reddy, Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. and his predecessors who originally extended this invitation to me, for giving me an opportunity to do so. Purity and nobility of character marked Sri Gopal Swarup Pathak's life. He maintained the highest standards of integrity in both his personal and his professional transactions. He was, in other words, a complete man who lived a life that was fully integrated in its inner and outer dimensions. As all those who came in contact with Sri Pathak would testify, integrity was his watchword and he sought to maintain the highest ethical standards in his individual, professional and public life. Sri G.S. Pathak's father was a humble employee of the North-Western Railway's accounts department. Gopal Swarupji, therefore, had very modest beginnings: -'Due to the financial circumstances of the family, he was urged by his father to set up a small business immediately after finishing High School. But young Gopal Swarup was disinclined to do so. He had rendered a very good account of himself and had achieved excellence at school. Keen to pursue further studies; Gopal Swarupji thereupon entered the Government College at Lahore on a scholarship. While at college, he continued to perform brilliantly and was clearly cut out for a promising career in the Sciences. -

India's planners have realized that rapid economic growth, which has begun to be taken for granted by the public, depends on the availability of energy. Coupled with the single-minded and successful efforts of the other big emerging nation, China, in locking up energy supplies, the realization dawned that India needed to redouble its own efforts. The result has been a number of efforts to tie up supplier relationships around the globe in a variety of areas: oil, natural gas, nuclear, and also hydro-electric power from neighbors. Unfortunately, these efforts have not been as successful as China's efforts. In the medium term, it still appears as though India is going to be dependent on external sources of supply of hydrocarbons for its energy needs. There is perhaps a lack of strategic inten{ There is no clearly-articulated idea that energy is something that Indian fully intends to capture, whatever the cost. Therefore, India's energy security does not look very assured, and the Chinese are considerably more successful in their quest for energy. If there are no major oil and gas finds in Indian territorial waters, India may be forced down a perilous path that includes a massive increase in the use of coal- with the attendant environmental issues - as well as increasing dependence on nuclear power. -

Killer Khilats, Part 1: Legends of Poisoned ªrobes of Honourº in India
Folklore 112 (2001):23± 45 RESEARCH ARTICLE Killer Khilats, Part 1: Legends of Poisoned ªRobes of Honourº in India Michelle Maskiell and Adrienne Mayor Abstract This article presents seven historical legends of death by Poison Dress that arose in early modern India. The tales revolve around fears of symbolic harm and real contamination aroused by the ancient Iranian-in¯ uenced customs of presenting robes of honour (khilats) to friends and enemies. From 1600 to the early twentieth century, Rajputs, Mughals, British, and other groups in India participated in the development of tales of deadly clothing. Many of the motifs and themes are analogous to Poison Dress legends found in the Bible, Greek myth and Arthurian legend, and to modern versions, but all seven tales display distinc- tively Indian characteristics. The historical settings reveal the cultural assump- tions of the various groups who performed poison khilat legends in India and display the ambiguities embedded in the khilat system for all who performed these tales. Introduction We have gathered seven ª Poison Dressº legends set in early modern India, which feature a poison khilat (Arabic, ª robe of honourº ). These ª Killer Khilatº tales share plots, themes and motifs with the ª Poison Dressº family of folklore, in which victims are killed by contaminated clothing. Because historical legends often crystallise around actual people and events, and re¯ ect contemporary anxieties and the moral dilemmas of the tellers and their audiences, these stories have much to tell historians as well as folklorists. The poison khilat tales are intriguing examples of how recurrent narrative patterns emerge under cultural pressure to reveal fault lines within a given society’s accepted values and social practices. -

Geochemical Modeling of Groundwater in Chinnar River Basin: a Source Identification Perspective

Geochemical modeling techniques using PHREEQCI will aid in demarcating the main factors and mechanisms controlling the chemistry of groundwater. An attempt has been made in hard rock terrain of Chinnar basin, Dharmapuri district of Tamilnadu, India to interpret the processes and factors controlling hydrogeochemistry of groundwater. The area is made up of rock units belonging to Charnockite and Granitic Gneiss. Groundwater chemistry has been attempted + + 2+ 2+ - - - - based on laboratory observations of major cations like Na , K , Ca and Mg and anions like Cl , HCO3 , NO3 , F , 2- 3- SO4 and PO4 . Piper diagram reveals higher bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium along the recharge zones and tend to decrease along the flow path and vice versa for ions like sodium, potassium and chloride. Two flow paths based on piper and saturation index were identified for two major lithounits. The granitic terrain shows precipitation of calcium and sulfate minerals and dissolution of silicate minerals. The charnockite terrain shows precipitation of silicates and dissolution of calcium and sulfate minerals. From initial to final solution slight variation in calcium and sulfate stability were identified but drastic change with reference to silicate minerals stability due to effective dissolution of silicate minerals from the litho units of the study area. -

However, state-level nuclear capability has previously only included nuclear weapons, limiting this application to a handful of states. Current scholarship lacks a detailed examination of state-level nuclear capability to determine if greater nuclear capabilities lead to conflict success. Ignoring other nuclear capabilities that a state may possess, capabilities that could lead to nuclear weapons development, fails to account for the potential to develop nuclear weapons in the event of bargaining failure and war. In other words, I argue that nuclear capability is more than the possession of nuclear weapons, and that other nuclear technologies such as research and development and nuclear power production must be incorporated in empirical measures of state-level nuclear capabilities. I hypothesize that states with greater nuclear capability hold additional bargaining power in international crises and argue that empirical tests of the effectiveness of nuclear power on crisis bargaining must account for all state-level nuclear capabilities. This study introduces the Nuclear Capabilities Index (NCI), a six-component scale that denotes nuclear capability at the state level.
