Your room will first be opened in the afternoon the day your contract starts, so if you arrive 3am you should make sure the contract starts the day before arrival. If your contract starts in the weekend your room will be opened at Friday afternoon (Samskipnaden opens your room and leaves the key inside, so you don’t need to worry about not being able to access your room) Rifles: If you want to borrow rifles (you need them when leaving town) during your stay please read the rifle part http://www.unis.no/studies/student-life/new-students/ Q: What do I need to pack? http://www.unis.no/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/PACKING-LIST.pdf - When it comes to equipment and how warm clothing you need it is up to what you plan to do and how easily you freeze - You should bring or buy a pair of thin liner gloves to wear under thicker mittens. During field work you will find that it is very hard to write with the thick scooter mittens, and that is awfully cold to do anything bare handed in -20 degrees celsius - Liner gloves can be very nice to have during the safety course, you will do part of it outside. -

Rapport 11- 2019 Status of Echinococcus multilocularis in Svalbard - Final Report to Svalbard Environmental protection Fund NORWEGIAN VETERINARY INTSTITUTE Status of Echinococcus multilocularis in Svalbard Preface This is the final report of the project “Status of Echinococcus multilocularis in Svalbard” 16/42. Funding for this project was allocated by the Svalbard Environmental Protection Foundation in the spring of 2016. The project was carried out by a team of researchers from the Norwegian Veterinary Institute and the Norwegian Polar Institute, who for the first time collaborated in this project. The Norwegian Veterinary Institute has contributed with expert knowledge on E. multilocularis, pathology, parasitological and molecular methods, and the Norwegian Polar Institute with specific expertise on Arctic foxes, sibling voles, E. multilocularis and environmental aspects. In addition, we have benefitted from working together with Fredrik Samuelsson, Svalbard guide with an MSc in Parasitology, whose local knowledge has greatly facilitated the sample collection. The results of our project were presented to locals at a seminar at the University Centre in Svalbard 19.11.2018. We gratefully acknowledge the Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund for supporting our project. We would also like to thank Paul Lutnæs/the Govenor of Svalbard, Rupert Krapp from the Norwegian Polar Institute and the Svalbard Vets for assisting in collecting samples for the project; Longyearbyens Hundeklubb, commercial dog sledging companies and private dog owners who kindly let us collect faecal samples from their dogs; arctic fox hunters who donated foxes for our study, and inhabitants in Longyearbyen who helped trapping sibling voles. PAMARCMiP’ 2011 - Campaign Report: 25.03. – 06.05.2011 PAMARCMiP 2011 [Polar Airborne Measurements and Arctic Regional Climate Model Simulation Project] GENERAL OVERVIEW / INTRODUCTION The Arctic environment is changing more rapidly than most other regions of the world. The dramatic decrease in Arctic sea ice cover is well documented [Serreze et al., 2007; Overland et al., 2009, Haas et al., 2010]. Many other processes and variables, such as the surface- atmosphere radiation balance, cloud cover, aerosol properties, and trace gas concentrations [Bottenheim et al., 2009, Stone et al., 2010, Lampert et al., 2011] are also changing but are not easily monitored from space. Surface observations are sparse, particularly over the central Arctic, where changes may be pronounced. The Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) plays a crucial role for exchange processes of momentum, heat, water vapour, trace gases and aerosol particles involving the cryosphere, land and sea surface and the atmosphere. Accurate representations of the vertical structure of the stable Arctic ABL still pose a serious challenge for climate models [Tjernström et al., 2004, Dorn et al., 2009]. Our ability to understand present changes and to predict future developments are further complicated by two-way feedbacks and interactions between the sea ice cover and the atmosphere, affecting the radiation balance as well as the fluxes of momentum, heat, moisture, gases, and aerosols. Satellites do not yet provide synchronous, coincident observations of various relevant sea ice and atmospheric parameters, nor possess sufficient spatial, temporal, and vertical resolution for the improvement of models. Satellite retrievals also require careful validation in the Arctic [Liu et al., 2010]. -

Ulvang Mastergradsoppgave i nordisk språkvitenskap Fakultet for humaniora, samfunnsvitenskap og lærerutdanning Institutt for språkvitenskap Universitetet i Tromsø Høsten 2012 Forord I mitt tidligere liv tilbragte jeg to år som radiotelegrafist (1964-66) og ett år som stasjonssjef (1975-76) ved Isfjord Radio1 på Kapp Linné. Dette er nok bakgrunnen for at jeg valgte å skrive en masteroppgave om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Seks delemner har utgjort halve mastergradsstudiet, og noen av disse førte meg tilbake til arktiske strøk. En semesteroppgave omhandlet Norske skipsnavn2, der noen av navna var av polarskuter. En annen omhandlet Språkmøte på Svalbard3, en sosiolingvistisk studie fra Longyearbyen. Den førte meg tilbake til øygruppen, om ikke fysisk så i hvert fall mentalt. Det samme har denne masteroppgaven gjort. Jeg har også vært student ved Universitetet i Tromsø tidligere. Jeg tok min cand. philol.-grad ved Institutt for historie høsten 2000 med hovedfagsoppgaven Telekommunikasjoner på Spitsbergen 1911-1935. Jeg vil takke veilederen min, professor Gulbrand Alhaug for den flotte oppfølgingen gjennom hele prosessen med denne masteroppgaven om stedsnavn på Svalbard. Han var også min foreleser og veileder da jeg tok mellomfagstillegget i nordisk språk med oppgaven Frå Amarius til Pardis. Manns- og kvinnenavn i Alstahaug og Stamnes 1850-1900.4 Jeg takker også alle andre som på en eller annen måte har hjulpet meg i denne prosessen. Dette gjelder bl.a. Norsk Polarinstitutt, som velvillig lot meg bruke deres database med stedsnavn på Svalbard, men ikke minst vil jeg takke min kjære Anne-Marie for hennes tålmodighet gjennom hele prosessen. -

Cultural heritage sites on Svalbard This booklet is intended as a guide for those who want to learn more about the cultural heritage sites in Longyearbyen and tour them on their own. It tells the story of a place that has evolved from a small mining town where the mining company operated every- thing to a local community with democracy, a university, tourism and a more diverse economy. Longyearbyen has many cultural monuments. The traces left behind by the mining industry are numerous and clear. Some people may view them as scars on the landscape, but they are important cultural monuments from the activities that provided Longyear City 1906. Her work appears in National Geographic, Wired, the New York Times, and elsewhere. Mark Sabbatini fi rst noticed the cracks in his apartment’s concrete walls in 2014. It had been six years since he moved to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago far out in the Barents Sea, about halfway between Norway’s northern tip and the North Pole. He was an itinerant American writer drawn by promises of an open, international society—and jazz music. Every winter the community of Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town at 78 degrees North latitude, holds a jazz festival to liven up the perpetual darkness. Residents, university students, tourists and visiting scientists min- gle in music halls, clinking champagne glasses to melodious tones as winds howl through RUSSIA the surrounding mountains. On his fi rst visit ARCTIC OCEAN Sabbatini had arrived just in time for the festivities.
