WHAT HAS BECOME OF THE SLENDANG? CHANGING IMAGES OF WOMEN AND JAVA Sita van Bemmelen and Mies Grijns The images of women in Java as depicted in academic studies, like their realities, have changed over the last half-century. An illuminating analogue can be found in the use of the slendang, a wide shawl originally made from batik cloth or from lurik, a striped coarsely woven material for daily use. To us, the transformation of the slendang over the past decades runs parallel to the development of studies on women in Java. The slendang is a predominantly female attribute, used by women and girls. Men occasionally use a slendang, but only for carrying small children. The anthropologist Hildred Geertz describes the slendang in the 1950s as more than just a piece of cloth for practical use: “Carrying a baby in a shawl is called nggéndong; and it is this action that is usually re-enacted as symbolic of the mother’s total care — for instance, at the wedding ceremony or at the harvest when the first ears of rice are carried home in a slendang. The slendang represents complete security…” (Geertz 1961:94). Women also use the slendang as a working “tool,” to transport other loads than babies such as firewood, trading goods, or jamu. The saying “sapikul, sagendong” depicts the different ways men and women carry goods: men in two baskets on a bamboo shoulder-pole, women in one basket fastened in a slendang on their backs.

    Antara Biografi dan Historiografi ANTARA BIOGRAFI DAN HISTORIOGRAFI (Studi 36 Buku Biografi di Indonesia ) Safari Daud PPs UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta [email protected] Abstract The writing of the religious leaders in Indonesia ranks the second after political figures ones. This ranking is the result of Gerry van Klinken’ research on biographies writings in Indonesia from 1950 to 2000 as many as 2,629 books . As the domain of science history , the quantity of writing biographies have not shown the quality of historiography. A total of 36 biography books that the writer analyzed using prevalence history method found out four historiographical issues. First, in the writing of character’s biography about his life has an impact on a critical attitude gap between academic interests of biographer and psychological pressure from mainstream figures who has written. Second, there is a plurality of the biographer rated from reporter, historians, scholars and experts from various professions with their own characteristics of literacy. Third, a biography written by historian is more scientific which shows the portion of the balance in the selection of figures, while the non- historian biographer is more interested in contemporary issues and prefer well-known figures. A variety of professions of the biographer is one of a consequences of the biography writing that much or even related to historiography. Abstrak Penulisan tokoh agama di Indonesia menempati urutan kedua setelah tokoh politik. Peringkat ini merupakan hasil penelitian Gerry van Klinken terhadap penulisan biografi di Indonesia dari tahun 1950 sampai tahun 2000 sebanyak 2.629 buku. Sebagai ranah keilmuan sejarah, kuantitas penulisan biografi belum menunjukkan kualitas historiografi.

    The Student Movement and the Rise and Fall of Suharto By Eric Beerkens In a hospital in Jakarta, the former president of the Republic of Indonesia is fighting for his live. Suharto’s 32 year reign over the archipelago has brought development at a high cost. For most, his name is inextricably connected with corruption, collusion and nepotism. Only few will remember him as Bapak Pembangunan (the ‘father of development’, as Suharto was fondly called in his better days). Among the few bright spots in his dark history is his realisation of near universal primary education. In terms of higher education, his legacy includes the expansion of the Indonesian higher education system by establishing universities in all provinces in the vast country and by allowing private providers. But the activities in and around these institutions became under increasingly strict control of his New Order regime. Students and academics have played a major role throughout the modern history of Indonesia and especially in the Suharto Era. Many courageous men and women have given their lives in the struggle for change and freedom. First in the movement towards independence from the Dutch, later in the transition from the Old to the New Order that brought Suharto into power and ten years ago, in the Reformasi movement that ultimately led to his fall. The 1960s: Helping Suharto in the saddle Suharto’s rise to power started with the 30 September movement, an event surrounded by mysteries, even after more than 40 years. History has shown that the work of art as a man- made product in the society receives influence from many different angles such as power and technology. That influence has grown bigger and wider as globalization expands. The development in the world of technology and information gives a different yet significant impact to people’s lives. What has happened in the increased global world leads to the formation of borderless society. The intertwined cultural identities became the root of the revolutionary changing in the reinvention of kebaya designs. The reproduction of kebaya designs shows that the designs have shifted from the main stream designs to the borderless designs. The old patterns of kebaya are modified by combining materials and new patterns that have never been appeared in the main stream kebaya designs. Based on the above explanation, this paper explores the reinvention of kebaya by Anne Avantie (Indonesian remarkable designer) and the rapid distribution of the copies in this digital technology era. The result of this study shows that the borderless kebaya designs are well accepted by the society.
