When I was looking into getting a graduate degree, Kanalu was the graduate student advisor. He remembered me from my undergrad years, which at that point had been nine years earlier. He was open, inviting, and supportive of any idea I tossed at him. We had several more conversations after I joined the program, and every single one left me dizzy. I felt like I had just raced through two dozen different ideas streams in the span of ten minutes, and hoped that at some point I would recognize how many things I had just learned. I told him my thesis idea, and he went above and beyond to help. He also agreed to chair my committee. I was orignally going to write about Pana Oʻahu, the stories behind places on Oʻahu. Kanalu got the Pana Oʻahu (HWST 362) class put back on the schedule for the first time in a few years, and agreed to teach it with me as his assistant. The next summer, we started mapping out a whole new course stream of classes focusing on Pana Oʻahu. But that was his last summer. -

[No further land records listed] Ke/Kekuhaupio's claim was contested by James Mahony (LCA 3121, NR 162.2; FT 119.2/ NT 446.3) on the testimony of his wife Naki, a kaikamahine (niece) of Ke's. She claims her makuakane (father) Maoheau [Ke's brother] had been given the land, and she got it in 1831 (or 1835). Witness Puaapila says Ke had neglected to pay the yearly rent for the land, and Naki had paid it for many years, so the konohiki, [K/A] Ioela Kuaana awarded the land to Naki. Aimaka, Ke's widow, admits Ke had not paid the land rent, but presents Mahele award from the king (NT 608.3) M.A. 57 RP 8304 to Ke: Hi Pau, Kaneohe, Oahu 13 acres (Aw. Bk. 3:336, Indices 398) Claim 729 [FF trans.] NR 389.2 Ke says this pahale [in Honolulu] was an old one, from the time of Kamehameha I. "We (makou) came from Hawaii in the time of the Russians [1816], and my kahu was living there, and so was I. But before these gentlemen hit the scene there was another musical legend, Alfred Apaka, the pioneer who first introduced the world to Hawai‘i’s music. Alfred Apaka, frequently known as the Golden Voice of Hawai‘i, has created a legacy for himself as he headlined venues such as the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the Moana Surfrider, Don at the Beachcomber, and Kaiser’s Hawaiian Village where he entertained thousands of visitors and locals alike. -

Borgerson University of Exeter 2 The Hawaiian Islands are of volcanic origin and are edged with coral reefs. Generally fertile with a mild climate, they are sometimes called “the paradise of the Pacific” because of their spectacular beauty: abundant sunshine; acres of green plants and gaily colored flowers; coral beaches with rolling white surf and fringed with palms; and, rising with sober majesty to solitary heights, cloud covered volcanic peaks. (Columbia Encyclopedia, 5th ed., s.v “Hawaii”) Hawaii was packaged for promotion and plunder. The objective of this paper is to focus attention on the image of Hawaii – a state, an ethnic identity, a race, and a cultural form – as a compelling example of how representation by dominant groups enables a colonialist process of objectification and imperialism. Representation often requires political, economic, and ideological choices made by those in power. We present a case study of how narratives and images were deftly combined and organized in the popular culture artifact, the Hawaiian record album, which encapsulates intersecting colonial interests.
