ECB resumed it’s first innings at 51/3 having lost Andy Lane to the last ball of Day 1. Billy Sanger, recruited from our Reserves to replace the injured Ganesh, was in his element. Billy, a Taranaki lad, bowled superbly and captured his first Premier 5 wicket bag. Rav, too, bowled magnificently – wickets fell regularly and only a last wicket stand of 42 held up our capturing of 1st innings points. Not a great PCC 2nd innings aside from Tim’s exceptional contribution. Wickets fell willy nilly – 4/31 when theSkipper came to the crease and, with Tim, settled things down. Tim just carried on in unruffled style – runs coming steadily until Dave departed at 118 with a declararation imminent. Tim then unleashed - hitting 20 off an over to bring up his second ton of the game and enabled Dave to declare. The target – 229 needed off approximately 37 overs. ECB came to the party – needing points desperatly they attacked from the start. The first wicket put on 48 quick runs but, from there they were in strife. Whilst Billy got some stick, Rav bowled magnificently, Dave tempted them and then Tom Hills and Sam Varcoe chimed in very opportunely. Andy Lane, aided by Smith, kept their score moving but ECB was never really in the hunt. The outright win has brought Parnell to the top of the Table and all now rests with the final game against Takapuna over the next two Saturdays. Falling short of a 1st innings points by just 6 runs, the Reserves, very sadly, lost any opportunity of heading their Table and earning promotion to the upper, or Major, tier. The Minor tier is not the best platform to provide support for our Prems – a very important aspect of Reserve play. And despite coming up from what is, in reality, 4th Grade (2 Premier tiers, 2 Reserve tiers) those that have been called to the Prems all have done well or, at the very least, “have not let the side down”. Billy Sanger, in particular, excelled but the difference in standard beteen the grades is alarming – Sam Varcoe hit 163 for the Reserves but couldn’t repeat last season’s form when back with the Prems. Ben Rainger struggled for runs when promoted and had no opportunity to bowl (nor repeat his 6/13 which he took for the Reserves). Ben, however, has gained hugely from his Prem experiences and has fielded for them outstandingly. Commenting on this last game – great to see Sam Fastier back with us after performing very usefully for Taranaki with scores of 10, 47, 46, and 31 (out of 127). Sam, time you knocked up a 50+ or, better still, 3 figures! And Stu Wood – into his 35th over on the trot (must have been more of a crawl for the last 2 or 3!). What stamina! Stu, are you in training to emulate Pete Legget in the next Ironman? Elliot Humphries 3/32 (7) RESULT: MATCH DRAWN – 1st innings points to Birkenhead Skipper Pete Hickman reporting: The 3rds travelled to East Coast Bays having already lost first innings, but seeking to redeem ourselves, which I am pleased to say we did. ECB declared earlier than expected, with a lead of 108 and just under 6 hours left to play. Pick of the bowlers was Elliot Humphries, who picked up 3 wickets from his 7 overs for 32 runs. Also successful debuts for Richard Calver and Arthur Pickthorn, both picking up wicket each. With the conditions not favouring batting, the decision was made to try and bat out the day to earn the draw. In a fantastic display, our top 4 all delivered. Finishing the day at 134 for 2 from 66 overs. Scott Hillman and Ben Gresson opened the batting, Scott finishing 11 from 33, Ben 27 from 89. Matthew Vercoe-Curtis came in at 3 for what would be one of the innings of our season, finishing 73 from 179 balls, batting for nearly five and a half hours. He was well supported by Ben, then Josh Milne coming in at 4, who finished 23 from 106 balls. Overall a great days play, especially from our top order. Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.

Heroes of the Weekend: Callum Douglas – 118* Lalit Bose – 219 off 113 balls Karun Phorgat – 6 for 43 1 & 2: Callum Douglas and Lalit Bose – for our Thirds vs. Grafton United, Callum scored 118* on his Parnell Senior debut and Lalit hit a colossal 219 off only 113 balls.Their 2nd wicket partnership of 292 falls just short of the Parnell Lower Grade Record for that wicket – 297 set by R Bracefield and J Wallace in 2013/14. Callum comes to us from the King’s College 1st XI, for whom he scored a ton last month, and he has previously represented Parnell in EDCA Age Group teams and Auckland Under 17s. Lalit arrived a fortnight ago from UK having recently graduated from Durham University. He represented the University in a 1st Class match, vs. Warwickshire, in 2015 but his real claim to fame is that in 2012 he hit a century for his school, Harrow, at Lord’s vs. Eton. 2: Karun Phorgat – the smile says it all, a 6 for for the Reserves. Karun, “Special K” to the Reserves for whom he is the spearhead, is originally from India but has played Premier Grade cricket in Melbourne. This is his first season with Parnell and is making his mark with his enthusiasm and, particularly, his quick bowling. He is the Reserves leading wicket taker with figures of 4/37, 4/50, 4/31 and 1/58 before getting this first 5 for! Men’s Premier Grade: Hedley Howarth Trophy – Major 2 Day Championship Round 4.

  • The Hedley Howarth Trophy Is Ours at Last!
Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 The Hedley Howarth Trophy is Ours at Last! Our victorious Premier Team at Orakei Domain last Saturday Auckland University CC defeated by an innings and 168 runs and over 21 points clear of 2nd placed Takapuna CC, Parnell, as part of Eastern Districts CC, last won the 2 Day Championship in 1965/66 and, in Parnell’s own name, way back in 1948/49. The ‘48/49 Team was exceptionally strong as it contained Merv Wallace, Bert Sutcliffe and Johnny Hayes. These three were selected, that season for NZ’s 1949 tour of England. Wallace started the tour in exceptional form and almost scored 1000 in May. Sutcliffe then scored over 2600 runs for the season, a total only exceeded by Don Bradman as an overseas tourist. Hayes, the fastest bowler in the side, was injured early on the tour and it wasn’t till some years later that he fulfilled his great promise. The 1965/66 Team, captained by Ross Morgan, contained Geoff Rabone, Terry Jarvis, and Bob Sutton. The first three all played for NZ and Sutton, a fast left armer was exceedingly unlucky not to have made the Test side. 1965/66 - Eastern Districts, 2 Day Champions 1. 2.
