Never-the-less, in came Sam Varcoe, Jack Coman and, after several seasons absence, Ryan Turner returned and took the gloves. Even without these players, our top 3 Senior teams – Prems, Reserves and Thirds, all recorded resounding wins last weekend! On Day 1. (10 Dec.) we restricted Takapuna to 81/4 before the rain came. Day 2. – thankfully fine! Looked good – Takapuna soon reduced to 120/7 then successive stands of 36, 18 and, quite heartbreaking, 49 for the 10th. Elliot Herd was their hero – 52 off 43 balls and he got great support from his partners. Eventually spin got them and it was time for us to battle further. It was not looking good – wickets fell at 7, 35, 42 and 53. Sam Varcoe had looked confident but was lbw for 18. Then a real captain’s knock – Dave joined Mitch McCann and the situation was retrieved. Where we had delayed using spin, Takapuna opened with off spinner Herd and our first four wickets fell to lbws, three to Herd. However, by sensible, positive batting, Dave and Mitch took the total to 160. Two more wickets – more nervousness – but Josh, coming in at 8, settled the matter in a resounding way. Strong hitting brought up the 1st innings win and play continued until Mitch, who had steered the ship magnificently, bought up his hugely deserved ton. Mitch, brought up in the Bay of Plenty as a team mate of Kane Williamson, showed all the latter’s attributes in getting us to this win. 1. Jocelyn was indisposed on Day 1. Saturday and Sue Aldworth (left) stood in for her as scorer. Thanks Sue who, earlier that morning, had done a stint for Rotary collecting food for City Mission at Remuera New World. Sue scores for our Reserves when they play at Home. Jocelyn was back for Day 2. 2. Jacob Burt – water boy on both days. GOOD WORK FROM OUR BOWLERS ESPECIALLY ON DAY 1. 1. Rav – captured the 1st wicket & another, O’Dowd, just before the rain came. Harder work on Day 2. 2. Ganesh, no wickets but good support with tight bowling on Day 1. Josh – adds fire and skittled Brad Cachopa for a duck Tom – had Will O’Donnell caught in his 1st over David – that 10th wicket at last after 103 runs added by Taka’s last 3 batsmen and, Dave batting – a real captain’s knock, perhaps his best for many seasons Mitch – a 4 to bring up his century, a “sublime innings” as rightly described on the ACA web. And Josh – all the bravado of youth, 40* off just 23 balls Thanks Mitch – 103* to secure a win over last season’s champions HEDLEY HOWARTH TROPHY POINTS TABLE AT 18 DEC. 2016 TEAM P W L T D WKTS TAKEN RUNS FOR PTS BONUS PTS TOTAL PTS 1 Parnell 5 5 0 0 0 58 1424 30 28.74 58.74 2 Papatoetoe 5 3 2 0 0 67 1364 22 30.39 52.39 3 Ak University 5 3 1 0 1 57 1631 17 30.56 47.56 4 Howick Pak. 5 1 1 0 3 52 1512 15 28.12 43.12 5 Takapuna 5 2 3 0 0 68 1125 12 28.25 40.25 6 East Coast Bays 5 1 4 0 0 65 1749 6 33.74 39.74 7 Cornwall 5 2 2 0 1 39 1319 15 22.93 37.93 8 Suburbs NL 5 1 3 0 1 49 1100 9 23.25 32.25 EDITOR’S COMMENT ON BONUS POINTS: A glance at the above Table shows that the HH Trophy can be decided, not on wins/losses but on Bonus Points that have little relevance to how, where or why the games are played. Note that the 6th Team, East Coast Bays, has more Bonus Points that we, Parnell, have earned. Yet Parnell has won all 5 games, East Coast Bays just 1 – where is the relevance of such points? Not the groundsmen's problem, he did his best with late notice and a week of rain!! We were able to bowl 11.3 overs on the day rain sent us home early. Kharun Phogat took the only wicket, being the last ball bowled that day. Grafton 20 for 1 wicket Day two, 17th Dec, Grafton continued to bat with a set number of overs available to them, scoring 120 all out with a few overs in the bank for Parnell as a result of them not using all their overs. Wicket takers for Parnell: Tom Urry lead the attack with figures of: 13 overs - 6 maidens - 4 wickets - 23 runs K Phogat continued with his run of bowling form: 14 overs - 2 maidens - 3 wickets - 28 runs James Bevin 11.4 overs - 1 maiden - 2 wickets - 36 runs with Razin chipping in with 1 wicket off 4 overs Our "very positive" day continued with an amazing display of power batting, annihilating the Grafton bowling, losing only one wicket in the process. James Mulvey hitting an aggressive 47 off 48 balls. Captain Tom Landrigan played supporting role in a 74 run partnership until James was out bowled. Lalit Bose joined Tom and they upped the anti. Tom scoring a well played 51 not out off 48 balls and Lalit added 28 not out off 14 balls, an innings that comprised 6 boundaries and two singles finishing the game in style with a huge 6 over extra cover. Adding another 57 run unbroken partnership Partnerships won the day All this off 19 overs!! What a great end to a very positive start to the 2016/7 cricket season. We will go into the 2nd part of the season at the head of the points table. In closing: At the post match "debrief" the lads reiterated that we must return from the Christmas break and ensure that we are up and firing from day one. It was great to be part of the team that have worked together well and enjoyed their cricket and "post match functions." • Weekly Update – 24 October 2009
Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.186: 2019/20 – Club of the Year! The 2019/20 Season may have ended a fraction prematurely but, for Parnell, it was a resounding success. Over it’s long history, 163 years, the Club has won many championships and produced some of New Zealand’s finest cricketers but few seasons have produced the results and accolades gained in 2019/20. COVID 19 has meant the postponement of the Annual Awards Dinner but Auckland Cricket has just announced the trophy winners and a superb collection of silverware comes to Parnell and our Players: “Club of the Year” – the Simmonds & Osborne Trophy awarded to Parnell Cricket Club Parnell last won this Award 27 years ago. The Trophy dates from 1905/06 when it was awarded jointly to City, Grafton, North Shore and Parnell Cricket Clubs. Parnell was the sole awardee in 1909/10 and North Shore won in 1910/11 but, then, till 1926/27 there were No Awards made. Reinstated the next season, From then it was awarded each year to WW 2 with Parnell winning in 1933/34. No awards during the War but from 1946/47 it has been presented annually again and Parnell won it the next season,1947/48. Next, and represented by Eastern Districts (Parnell, Orakei, Ellerslie and Panmure CCs), we won in 1959/60. The District Scheme ended in 1966 but Parnell did not win the Trophy again until 1992/93. That season Mike Simpson, our present Patron, was both President and Chairman. It has taken another 27 years to win again.
