Lifeguarding Class at the Hinckley Pool

The HF Community Education will be sponsoring an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. This course trains lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Topics include: water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, , breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more.

Participants must demonstrate a professional attitude and mature behavior, be prepared for all class activities, including appropriate swimwear for all in-water skill session. Complete reading assignments. Behave appropriately during activities. Make an effort to improve skills during practice sessions. Treat others with respect. Follow all pool safety rules and any additional safety precautions as explained throughout the course.

Students needing Waterfront component must identify that on registration and will at the Pine City later in the year as it includes some skills that can’t be done at the pool. Prerequisites found on back of this flyer. Cost includes: Instruction, Red Cross Fee, CPR Mask/Whistle/Fanny Pack, and textbook. (If you digitally, download your book a $25 discount will be given at the time of the class.)

The prerequisite skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the course. Please bring a swimsuit and towel everyday for class.

To successfully complete the course, you must attend the entire course, participate in all skill sessions/drills, activities and scenarios, demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios, and pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent. Participants must be 15 years old by the conclusion of class Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an electronic American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/ First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for 2 years. Please make sure you have a valid email listed on registration form.

Lifeguarding Prerequisites for entry-level participants at all facility types:

 Certification: Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED–valid 2 years  Prerequisites:  Must be at least 15 years old on or before the last day of class  Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing  Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs  Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: . Starting in the water, swim 20 yards . Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 -10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object . Return to Surface and swim 20 yards on back with both hands holding object . Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Waterpark Skills - For waterpark environments and multi-attraction facilities: . Certification: Waterpark Skills: valid only with Lifeguarding or Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/ CPR/AED—valid 2 years . Prerequisites: Same as for Lifeguarding course

Waterfront Skills- For non-surf open-water areas at public parks, resorts, camps and campgrounds: . Certification: Waterfront Skills: Valid only with Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED–valid 2 years . Prerequisites: o Must be at least 15 years old on or before the last day of class o Swim 550 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing o Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs o Complete a timed event within 1 minutes, 40 seconds:  Starting in the water, swim 20 yards  Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object  Surface and swim 20 yards on back with both hands holding object  Exit the water without using a ladder or steps o Complete an underwater event:  Starting in the water, swim 5 yards (the face may be in or out of the water)  Submerge, swim under water & retrieve 3 dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water  Return to the surface after picking up all three dive rings and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence
