PASSIE GEEFT VLEUGELS Luchtvaarterfgoed in musea en daarbuiten THEMA LUCHTVAARTERFGOED 1 VOORWOORD Icaros, de brokkenpiloot uit de Griekse mythologie, is beroemder dan zijn vader Daedalos, die er wel in geslaagd is de vlucht van Kreta naar Athene te maken. Terwijl de hoogmoedige Icaros in de Egeïsche Zee stortte, koos Daedalos de gulden middenweg tussen zee en zon en wist veilig te landen, met zijn grote vleugels, gemaakt van vogelveren die hij met bijenwas op een houten constructie had gekleefd. Sindsdien is de mens blijven dromen van vliegen. Fantasierijk zijn de tekeningen die Leonardo da Vinci eind vijftiende eeuw maakte van allerlei vliegende tuigen. Hilarisch zijn de beelden uit de beginjaren van de film van mannen die zich, net als Daedalos, vleugels hebben aangemeten, een sprintje inzetten en klapwiekend van een heuveltje springen om dan, Icaros achterna, neer te vallen. Alles veranderde toen Orville en Wilbur Wright op 17 december 1903 met hun Flyer op het winderige strand bij Kitty Hawk in North Carolina verschenen om geschiedenis te schrijven. De eerste vlucht allertijden duurde 12 seconden en de tweedekker had 37 meter afgelegd. Vanaf dan ging het steeds sneller, verder en hoger, al moesten de pioniers-piloten eerst nog vele keren rechtkrabbelen uit hun neergestorte ‘vliegmachienen’. Dit themanummer schetst de geschiedenis van de luchtvaart, van de eerste vlucht met de ‘montgolfière’ in 1783 tot en met de F-16 van vandaag. Het is een bezoek aan de gigantisch hal van het War Heritage Institute, de nieuwe naam van Legermuseum in Brussel. Het is meteen een tocht langs historische momenten, vooral conflicten, geïllustreerd door vele tientallen vliegtuigen, die vaak boeiende verhalen vertellen. -

We have a wonderful group of teachers offering a variety of classes. Classes 100 Chrysanthemum — All levels ~ Sylvia Fellows Chrysanthemum Lace is a tape lace that has some elements resembling Brugges Lace. It is characterized by the "Split Spider" stitch on one side of each tape. The "petals" formed can look like a chrysanthemum flower, a popular motif in this lace. It uses, usually, only 8 pairs of bobbins or less. 101 Milanese Lace — All levels ~ Louise Colgan Milanese Lace is characterized by special decorative stitches that become integral features of each design. The creative nature of this type of lace makes it suitable for both traditional and contemporary interpretation. A variety of projects will be offered to cover all levels of Milanese techniques. Students will be given the option of using colored threads to make their own unique pieces from the selected patterns. A solid foundation in basic Bobbin Lace skills is required. Diagram-reading skills are also recommended. NOTE: Continuing “Louise” projects are also welcome. 102 Tatting — All levels ~ Randy Houtz There are several methods and applications for tatting split rings. Class time will be spent examining a different technique and/or application: the basic split ring; woven split rings; adding a ring to the split ring; and adding rings to both sides are examples. Prerequisites: Students should be comfortable with tatting rings, chains and joins. It is helpful to know other tatting methods but not necessary. -

The workshop is one of three produced in collaboration between DATS and the V&A, funded by the Renaissance Subject Specialist Network Implementation Grant Programme, administered by the MLA. The purpose of the workshops is to enable participants to improve the documentation and interpretation of collections and make them accessible to the widest audiences. Between the 11th and the 15th of August 2017, the city centre will be submerged in an absolute botanical bounty: from the moment you arrive at the Grand-Place, you will be struck by the overwhelming sensuality of our 2017 theme, a festive fusion of flowers and fruits! International Organization of Lace, Inc. & Doris Southard Lace Guild cordially invite you to attend July 27 through August 2, 2015 at the Marriott Coralville Hotel & Conference Center, Coralville, Iowa. Note: the convention begins on MONDAY. The International Organization of Lace, Inc. (I.O.L.I.) holds a convention each summer for people who are interested in making lace, collecting lace or just learning about lace. Many classes are offered throughout the week, including 12-hour, 24-hour and 30-hour classes, and there will be some 3-hour, 5-hour and 6-hour classes. Our teachers come from the United States, Germany, England, Scotland and Japan. Learn to make bobbin lace and needle lace, or how to make lace by knitting, crocheting, tatting, and doing Hardanger embroidery. Classes range from beginning to advanced and from traditional to contemporary. Our Vendor Room brings together businesses from around the country, who sell lace books and patterns, thread, tools and other lacemaking supplies, and even antique lace. The Exhibit filled with very special lace and lace-related items will be open daily to convention attendees. Thursday and Saturday will be Public Days when the general public is welcome to visit the Vendor Room and Exhibit. Tuesday evening there will be an opportunity to get an oral appraisal for lace items. This activity will be free with a full registration and $5 for the public to attend. Appraisals will be done to benefit the convention, $5 for one item or $10 for three items. Other events include a fun “competition” called the Tat-Off, an optional evening meal including delicious Iowa sweet corn, the Teachers’ showcase, a dinner, a luncheon and a banquet, favors and a raffle. -

HE task of the author of this work has not been an attempt to brush the dust of ages from the early history of lace in the •^ hope of contributing to the world's store of knowledge on the subject. His purpose, rather, has been to present to those whose rela- tion to lace is primarily a commercial one a compendium that may, perchance, in times of doubt, serve as a practical guide. Though this plan has been adhered to as closely as possible, the history of lace is so interwoven with life's comedies and tragedies, extending back over five centuries, that there must be, here and there in the following pages, a reminiscent tinge of this association. Lace is, in fact, so indelibly associated with the chalets perched high on mountain tops, with little cottages in the valleys of the Appenines and Pyrenees, with sequestered convents in provincial France, with the raiment of men and women whose names loom large in the history of the world, and the futile as well as the successful efforts of inventors to relieve tired eyes and weary fingers, that, no matter how one attempts to treat the subject, it must be colored now and again with the hues of many peoples of many periods. The author, in avowing his purpose to give this work a practical cast, does not wish to be understood as minimizing the importance of any of the standard works compiled by those whose years of study and research among ancient volumes and musty manuscripts in many tongues have been a labor of love.
