    Transdev Australasia submission for: NTC - Developing a heavy vehicle fatigue data framework Company Overview Transdev Australasia (Transdev) is a public transport operator in Australia and New Zealand − delivering more than 120 million customer journeys each year. The company employs 5,300 staff across five modes of transport in seven distinct locations across Australasia. Transdev has light rail operations in Sydney, and bus operations in metropolitan Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin. It operates ferries in Brisbane and in Sydney in a joint venture with Transfield Services. Response for consideration Summary of Fatigue issues – In principle, Transdev considers that the heavy vehicle fatigue data framework (the framework) is a step in the right direction for industry. The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and framework should encapsulate every aspect of compliance, monitoring and review across all states and territories prior to establishing standard data criteria for the framework. This means that legislation, policy, enforcement, medical standards, data capturing and reporting all need to be consistent or standardised across all jurisdictions. The HVNL currently regulates heavy vehicle driver fatigue in every Australian jurisdiction except WA and the NT. With regards to priorities in the operation of Metropolitan and Regional busses, it is the quantity and quality of sleep that impacts on driver well-being, which in turn affects their fitness to work and should be examined together as a whole. The framework was established for heavy vehicle drivers who typically do long haul journeys that are most at risk. The current framework has a minimal focus on Metropolitan/Regional bus drivers, who work shifts and fluctuate under / above the 100km radius.

My own research on the Carment and Inglis families’ histories represents one such journey that began about half a century ago. As a boy in Sydney, I was curious about my mainly Scottish ancestry and asked my parents and other relations about it. Although I was Australian-born and never travelled outside Australia until I was an adult, Scottish associations and influences were prominent during my childhood. My Carment and Inglis grandmothers were born in Scotland, while my Carment grandfather received his university education and worked there. Scotland was often mentioned in family conversations.

    ABSENCE AND PRESENCE: A HISTORIOGRAPHY OF EARLY WOMEN ARCHITECTS IN NEW SOUTH WALES Bronwyn J. Hanna Faculty of the Built Environment University of New South Wales 1999 A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ABSTRACT Women architects are effectively absent from architectural history in Australia. Consulting first the archival record, this thesis establishes the presence of 230 women architects qualified and/or practising in NSW between 1900 and 1960. It then analyses some of these early women architects’ achievements and difficulties in the profession, drawing on interviews with 70 practitioners or their friends and family. Finally it offers brief biographical accounts of eight leading early women architects, arguing that their achievements deserve more widespread historical attention in an adjusted canon of architectural merit. There are also 152 illustrations evidencing their design contributions. Thus the research draws on quantitative, qualitative, biographical and visual modes of representation in establishing a historical presence for these early women architects. The thesis forms part of the widespread political project of feminist historical recovery of women forebears, while also interrogating the ends and means of such historiography. The various threads describing women’s absence and presence in the architectural profession are woven together throughout the thesis using three feminist approaches which sometimes harmonise and sometimes debate with each other. The items were researched to address specific questions from the project curator, or to provide context and broad themes, and did not involve exhaustive research on any topic.
