Domesday Project - Maps

1. The County Council holds master copies of Ordnance Survey maps at various scales covering most of the County. It has a licence to copy these for educational purposes. Copies are of course very much cheaper than originals bought directly from the OS.

2. For Land Cover mapping purposes the Primary Support Team recommend that the best 'value for money' is provided by 1/5,000 scale maps (approximately 12 inches to the mile). A sample is attached, and you will notice that a 1 kilometre square at this scale fits neatly onto an A4 sheet of paper - handy for photocopying, clipboads, etc. (The map is produced from a 1/2,500 original, reduced by a half).

3. Twelve of these maps will cover your block. They cost 53p each, making a total cost of £6.36. To order a set telephone Catherine Walter at County Hall on extension 5756 and quote your block number and an SO/D number. She will work out the individual map numbers and place the order with the printing section.

4. For the built up areas you may need a larger scale map, perhaps the basic 1/2,500 (25 inches to 1 mile). It is cheaper to enlarge parts of your 1/5,000 scale map using a photocopier than to produce a full map, and the Primary Support Team will do this for you if you do not have access to a suitable photocopier.

5. In the towns of Taunton, and no 1/5,000 scale maps are available, only 1/2,500 on an A4 sheet or 1/1,250 on A2 originals, each covering an area~ kilometre square. Thus to cover your block you may need up to 48 A4 sheets, but you will need at least this scale to map your information.

Domesday Project

I am afraid we are running a little late on this and I apologise for the fact that we have simply been too busy to deal with it as promptly as we would have liked.

I You will find enclosed a list of grid allocations. I confess I have been somewhat arbitrary in this since it would have been pretty hopeless to do it in a committee of umpteen interested parties. The allocation has been made according to a few principles, notably those of propinquity and age-appropriateness. Where several schools are close together you will understand the difficulty and I considered it appropriate to give large schools blocks with the major built-up areas. I also recognised that larger schools could handle the problem of distance better than smaller ones. If you think you have strong reason to appeal, please, do so. Likewise, if you feel you cannot take on the number of blocks allocated.

On the enclosed sheets you will find against the grid reference number the school allocated that block. I have left blocks available for other groups which are indicated as predominantly in Somerset or the neighbouring authority. I make the preliminary assumption that largely out-county blocks will be allocated by the other counties.

I have now passed responsibility as coordinator on to Jon Rose, Education Officer (Curriculum and Assessment) and have asked Primary Inspectors and especially our Inspector for Computer Education to take on the next stages of consultation.
