Rocky Report by Coach Al

A YEAR IN REVIEW – 2020 – ’21 Let me introduce myself. My name is Al Fontes and I am new to the Rocky Mountain wrestling family. Prior to moving to Idaho in August of 2020, I resided in Livermore, California, located in the East Bay Area. My wife and I worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for thirty years, a research and development complex under the Department of Energy. In addition, I was the state editor for the California Wrestler Newsletter (25 years) and also a contributing editor with several of the national wrestling publications and websites (i.e., Wrestling USA Magazine, WIN Magazine, Amateur Wrestling News, etc.). The sport of wrestling has been an integral part of my life for 43 years as a competitor, coach, mentor, promoter, and writer. No other sport has taught me more about life lessons than the sport wrestling. Unlike many other sports I had participated in, the rigor and intensity that goes with the day-to-day physical training, coupled with the mental fortitude required to set foot on the mat to do battle, is beyond comparison. As a coach, I have had the honor and privilege to coach hundreds of kids at all skill levels. Each and every one of them is a true warrior and a member of a small club of athletes in the world’s toughest and most demanding sport.

From the first day I entered the wrestling room at Rocky, I knew it was going to be a great fit for me. In no time, I was able to build strong bonds with the kids and look forward to our journey ahead. The coaching staff (with a combined years of experience well over a century) is totally committed to the growth and improvement of the Rocky program at the district and state levels and is great to work with (Heritage staff inclusive). I am honored to be part of the Rocky wrestling family and very eager to coach and promote the program for many years to come. This newsletter, The Rocky Report, will come out periodically during the regular and post seasons and

Edition – 1.1 Rocky Mountain High School (est. 2008) June 2021

be distributed to the families and fans via e-mail, as well as other outlets yet to be determined (e.g., Rocky Facebook group page). My primary goal is to highlight the exceptional things that are happening with our program, its history, and the achievements of our wrestlers.

During my years involved in wrestling, I have never experienced a season anywhere close to the one we had in 2020-’21. It will definitely be one to remember for many years to come. Simply put, the COVID-19 pandemic was a shock to our nation and the world, causing a rippling affect that has altered our normal way of life, coaching sports, and our future outlook moving forward. Unlike a large percentage of the country, the state of Idaho made the decision to authorize youth sports to continue, but with some caveats that required all programs to implement newly established COVID protocols to practice and compete (e.g., minimum number of kids in the room at a given time). This was a small price to pay to ensure our kids were provided the opportunity to have a semi-normal season…the means definitely justified the end. To be honest, in the wake of the COVID pandemic, I did not have a great deal of optimism at the beginning of our season (in November) that we would navigate our way to the Idaho State Championships in late February with a full team. There were so many unknown factors that it was very difficult to know week by week whether our season would continue or not. Regardless, our coaching staff pressed forward and to our fortune, we made it through districts and to the state championships held at the Ford Center in Nampa. Among the most important goals for a coach (or staff) to achieve is to train each individual athlete to mentally and physically peak and reach their full potential at the right time during the season, the post season District and State Championships being the targeted end game. This is a large undertaking considering every athlete on the team has his/her own unique challenges or capabilities. As stated prior, the reality of the COVID pandemic, coupled by an array of protocols (e.g., wearing masks) designed to minimize the probability of being infected by or spreading the virus, presented our coaching staff with challenges unforeseen or ever experienced. Despite these challenges, we did everything in our power to create an “as normal” environment in our practice room and at competitions (dual meets and tournaments). The following is a year in review for the 2020 – ’21 season. Our first tournament of the season (December) was the Tim Matthews Invitational held at Jerome High School (Coach Bullocks’ alma mater). Overall, the team wrestled well considering it was very early in the season. Winning individual titles for the Grizzlies were senior Justin Kozlowski (285s) and juniors Tyler Jones (138s) and Mason Jacobsen (220s). Also reaching the championship finals, but finishing runner-up were Zachary Loretto (113s) and junior Luke Jensen (132s). Other medalists include frosh standout Cael Bullock (3rd – 106s), Zac Henderson (5th – 145s), and Treygan Price (6th – 170s). Overall, it was a great team performance with Rocky finishing third out of fifteen schools in the team standings.

2020 Tim Mathews Invitational - Jerome

The Rollie Lane Invitational is one of the toughest competitions in the state of Idaho. Traditionally, the Rollie Lane fields the best of the best from Idaho (5A, 4A, 3A, and 2A divisions) and has attracted high caliber individuals and teams from adjacent states. (This year, many out of state teams and individuals did not travel to Rollie as a result of the COVID pandemic). This year’s event had sixteen mats spanning the large floor area of the Ford Idaho Horse Park (Ford Center, Nampa), conducting competitions in the varsity, JV, and girl’s divisions. Rocky sent a large contingent of wrestlers to this event and came home with some hardware. The varsity team realized from round 1 forward that this competition is the measuring stick for state and much more. Battling through the stiff competition to make it to the medal rounds were Tyler Jones (3rd – 138s), Mason Jacobsen (5th – 220s), and senior Bronson Staley (6th – 195s), who defaulted to 6th place after sustaining an injury in the semi-finals. In the girl’s division, returning state medalists Alexandra Garvin (3rd – 130s) and Mia Furman (2nd – 130s) wrestled very well and proved that they are among the elite in Idaho. In the JV division, Rocky only sent a few kids to this competition with frosh standout Tyler Wells reaching the championship finals, placing second in a hard fought match. The majority of the JV (Varsity B team) competed at the Middleton Tournament, producing thirteen medalists in the top six with Hunter Horvath bringing home the lone individual championship title at 120s.

2021 District III Championships

ROCKY FINISHES THIRD AT THE 5A DISTRICT III CHAMPIONSHIPS

Rocky entered the post season with an 8-4 dual meet record, a large percentage of its wrestlers being underclassmen (19 out of 21 – 90%). The road map to the Idaho State Championships is through the District III Championships (D3), rated among the most competitive qualifying tournaments in the 5A state division. Unlike a majority of states where only the top varsity wrestler is able to qualify to their respective state championships, the D3 qualifier in the 5A division grants each school the opportunity to enter two wrestlers per weight group (Varsity A and B). In my humble opinion this is good for the sport of wrestling, especially for keeping a substantial number of wrestlers active throughout the post season, which provides increased opportunity to excel to the next level. The name of the game to win the D3 Championships is to qualify as many wrestlers possible, thirty being the max with fifteen weight groups. Entering the 2021 Championships with 21 entrants, Rocky’s young team had an outstanding performance with 10 wrestlers qualifying to the State Championships. Leading the Rocky contingent was senior Bronson Staley (195s), who became the eighth wrestler in Rocky history to win a D3 title (won his third district medal), the last being in 2017 by now assistant coach, Nate Cooper. Following Staley is senior Justin Kozlowski (285s), placing second and earning his fourth district medal, the sixth Rocky wrestler to join this small club. Also reaching the championship finals is returning state placer, Tyler Jones (138s), who lost a hard fought match against Meridian’s Cade White, the returning state champion. Other notable wrestlers qualifying to the state championships include junior Luke Jensen (3rd – 126s), Cael Bullock (3rd – 106s), Titus Nichols (4th – 126s), Mason Jacobsen (3rd – 220s), Chase Jensen (6th – 98s), and Noah McGhee (6th – 113s). As I had mentioned prior, among the many goals of a coaching staff is for its athletes to peak at the right time of the season. Entering the D3 unseeded, frosh standout Brady Abbott (145s) found himself in a tough position; win his final placing match or not qualify to the state championships. Against all odds, he battled his opponent with a “never quit” attitude and prevailed by winning in a major decision. Only a few weeks prior, Abbott had lost to this opponent (2020 state qualifier) by a technical fall…If you believe, you can achieve!!! In the end, Rocky placed a solid third place (second time in the school’s history – since 2008) behind state powers Meridian (ranked #1 in state) and Kuna (ranked #2 in state – 2020 4A State Champs). Also receiving D3 recognition awards was Head Coach Guy Bullock (Coach of the Year) and Todd Hine (Assistant Coach of the Year). Well deserved!

JONES AND STALEY REACH CHAMPIONSHIP STATE FINALS

As of this writing, I am still astounded that we were able to navigate our program through the uncertainties of the COVID pandemic to finally reach the District III and State Championships without losing one athlete to the virus. I couldn’t begin to state what the probability statistic is for a situation of this nature. Nonetheless, we made it to the Big Show, qualifying 10 wrestlers to the 5A State Championships (80% underclassmen). Since the establishment of Rocky Mountain High School in 2008, the Rocky program has produced a total of 39 state medals, averaging 3 medals per year. This year’s young team performed above the annual average with 5 medalists placing in the top 6. Making his second trip to the state finals, senior team captain Bronson Staley had to settle for runner-up once again. Leading up to the finals, Staley had three straight pins only to face Rylan Rogers of Coeur d’ Alene, rated among the top “blue chip” prep wrestlers in the country (Rogers was a National Prep Champion for Blair Academy of New Jersey prior to transferring to Coeur d’ Alene). Also producing a second state medal, junior Tyler Jones (138s) earned his first trip to the finals, coming up short in a highly contested match against cross-town rival Cade White of Meridian (2x State Champ). Other Rocky wrestlers coming home with hardware include underclassman Cael Bullock (106s – 3rd), Titus Nichols (126s – 5th), and Mason Jacobsen (220s – 3rd). Overall, Rocky had a good showing at the state championships placing 7th in the team standings. Considering the number of returning wrestlers for the 2021 – ’22 season, I truly believe Rocky will challenge for a top 3 or 4 placing or higher in the years to come.

FURMAN AND GARVIN BECOME ROCKY’S FIRST TWO-TIME GIRL’S STATE MEDALISTS

The first unofficial girls state wrestling championships was conducted in 2019 at Pocatello High School with approximately 60 wrestlers. The numbers nearly doubled in 2020 and this season the trend continued upward with around 130 wrestlers. Unbeknownst to many outside the wrestling circles, girls wrestling at all levels has been exponentially growing across the United States, and for the last several years, has been the fastest-growing high school sport. On September 29, 2020, the Idaho School Activities Association (IHSAA) approved girls to conduct its first official state high school wrestling championships beginning during the 2021-’22 season, making Idaho the 29th state to add girls wrestling (with the exception of Wyoming, the other twelve western states sponsor girls wrestling in the high school division). During the 2020 – ’21 season, sophomores Mia Furman and Alexandra Garvin established themselves among the elite in Idaho by placing in the top 3 in all competitions they had entered. At the girl’s state championship Furman made her second trip to the championship finals, winning the 129 pound state final by coming back in the waning seconds of the third period by earning a fall. Also earning a second state medal, Garvin placed fifth in the same weight group as Mia. Both Rocky wrestlers are pioneers in the future of girl’s wrestling in Idaho.

SENIOR NIGHT 2021

It has been a tradition at Rocky, as well as many schools across the country, to celebrate their senior class athletes before departing from high school to their journey in life. This season, Rocky celebrated three outstanding seniors that not only lead by example in the wrestling room, but off the mat, too. Seniors Justin Kozlowski, Bronson Staley, and Treygan Price were true leaders among their teammates and exhibit an outstanding work ethic. I wish you all the best for your future, wherever that may be.

ROCKY’S FEEDER PROGRAM, HERITAGE MIDDLE SCHOOL WINS 9TH DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

The success of any high school program begins at the grassroots level. For Rocky Mountain High School, Heritage Middle School (Led by Rocky Coach Todd Hine) is one of a couple feeder programs in the area that is a stepping stone for many on our current roster. The other being Sawtooth MS (Led by Rocky Coach Richard Gines), but a result of recent district wide boundary changes will join Star MS next season as the main feeder programs for Meridian’s newest high school, Owayhee. Normally, the middle school season is held from October to November, but due to the COVID pandemic the regular 2020 season was rescheduled and held after the 2021 High School State Championships. This season, I had the opportunity to join the coaching staff at Heritage, which is made up of several Rocky coaches, fathers with vast wrestling experience, and Rocky alumni. I have coached at the middle school level off and on for the last forty years and have to say that my experience this year was beyond my initial expectation…this is the best group of middle school kids I have every had the privilege to coach. The 2020 team continued the long tradition of winning the District Championships by going undefeated in dual meets and winning their nineth title since the early 2000s (est. 2007). Overall, Heritage had sixteen wrestlers earn medals in the top 4 with Hayden Nye (105s), Kylan Mills (160s), Ian Morrison (175), Logan Shearing (190s), and Hunter Lara (HWT) winning championship titles. Heritage middle schoolers also competed at the Folkstyle State Championships and had thirteen wrestlers bring home medals with Hunter Lara winning the state title at heavyweight.

IDAHO GRIZZ WRESTLING CLUB

Welcome to the Idaho Grizz Wrestling Club, home to Rocky’s freestyle and Greco-Roman style wrestling for wrestlers ranging from elementary to high school age groups. There is the old saying, “summer wrestling makes winter champions.” I can attest to this from my own experience and achievements. This post season, the Idaho Grizz has been very busy competing at local, state, and regional competitions. Currently, the Idaho Grizz WC is experiencing a greater increase of members at the middle school level (a great sign for the future growth of the high school program). More recently, the club had an outstanding showing at the Idaho Freestyle/Greco- Roman State Championships with Hayden Nye (double champ – 106s), Hunter Lara (double champ – 250s), Logan Shearing (187s), and Talea Nichols (14U) winning state titles. At the Western Regionals, Rocky standout Tyler Jones (145s) placed 4th, while Talea Nichols from Heritage Middle School earned a championship in the girl’s division. In addition, the Idaho Grizz WC took first place at the Idaho Gold Rush tournament producing twelve champions and numerous medalists in the top 5. Moreover, Rocky’s Mia Furman earned All-American honors at the High School National Recruiting Showcase and Girls Folkstyle Nationals (16U). Congratulations to all Grizz wrestlers…Our future looks bright!
