Nonlinear Hedonic Pricing: a Confirmatory Study of South African Wines
International Journal of Wine Research Dovepress open access to scientific and medical research Open Access Full Text Article ORIGINAL RESEARCH Nonlinear hedonic pricing: a confirmatory study of South African wines David A Priilaid1 Abstract: With a sample of South African red and white wines, this paper investigates the Paul van Rensburg2 relationship between price, value, and value for money. The analysis is derived from a suite of regression models using some 1358 wines drawn from the 2007 period, which, along with red 1School of Management Studies, 2Department of Finance and Tax, and white blends, includes eight cultivars. ROBERSON WINE FINE WINE TASTINGS ANTINORI’S SUPER TUSCANS: TIGNANELLO & SOLAIA Thursday 28th April 2011 ANTINORI’S SUPER TUSCANS THE ESTATE The family The Antinori family are well entrenched as part of Tuscan wine royalty, their involvement in the trade dating back to 1385 when Giovanni di Pierso Antinori first joined the winemakers’ guild. For many years, as was the case with other famous wine families like the Frescobaldis and Ricasolis, they were involved in the buying and selling of wine estates as well as having interests in many other trades. In 1506 Nicolo Antinori purchased the beautiful palazzo in Florence which, to this day, remains the HQ of today’s Marchese Piero Antinori and his sprawling wine empire which encompasses 24 estates in 6 different countries. For hundreds of years after the Marchese and his descendents had moved in to the palazzo, the wines of the Antinori family established a reputation as an excellent source for Tuscan wines and they began accumulating land in some of the region’s most famed viticultural areas - in particular Chianti Classico. By 1863, the family business was doing well enough that the ‘Fattoria dei Marchesi Lodovico e Piero Antinori’ was formed in order to fully professionalise what they were doing and with the aim of “establishing some order among the various winegrowing activities developed by the previous generations of Antinoris since the XIV century.”. Before long, this new company had become one of the star performers and the family’s influence continued to grow as the wines were exported throughout the world. This ambassadorial role was continued by today’s Marchese, Piero, who is widely heralded as the most important man in Tuscan wine thanks to his wide reaching efforts to improve the quality and reputation of Tuscan wines. -

IN THE CRADLE OF AN ANCIENT CULTURE WE PRODUCED WINE FOR FAMILY PLEASURE FOR DECADES. NOW WE WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO LET OUR ISLAND, SARDINIA, SHINE THROUGH ITS MOST OUTSTANDING AREAS - MEILOGU AND GALLURA. WITH A NEW VISION: THE CRU CONCEPT THE ORIGINS We decided to start from our homeland, the Meilogu, renowned for its production of grapes and cherries. Meilogu – in sardinian language - means “place in the middle”, and in fact is an area in the center of the Logudoro – “gold place” in sardinian language - a beautiful region in northern Sardinia. It is an untouched land, which has preserved the suggestions of our early history. It is a land that hosted, just until a few years ago, one of the Sardinia largest areas of quality grapes’ production, reaching over 1,000 hectares of vineyards. It is the wine area that remained on the private memory of our great mentor and guide - the celebrated winemaker Giacomo Tachis – used to visit these places, for the selection of grapes and musts. THE MEILOGU Here, in the village named Bonnanaro, where we grow our vines, it is possible to discover some of the remains of an ancient culture, which preceded the “Nuraghi” era. It is easy to understand why our ancestors chose this region, and built here one of the most magnificent Nuraghe: “sa Domo de su Re” (the house of the king), and the nuragic village of “Santu Antine”. Meilogu is a sweet land, exposed to light and wind, perfect for vineyards, fields, orchards and flocks. The grapes ripe near cherry trees, the vines take strength from our sandy and limestone earth. -

However, Swedish wines remain largely unknown internationally. In this study, the typicality and sensory space of a set of twelve wines, including five Swedish Solaris wines, was evaluated blind by Swedish wine experts. The aim of the work was to evaluate whether the Swedish wine experts have a common concept of what a typical Solaris wines should smell and taste like or not and, also, to bring out more information about the sensory space and chemical composition of Solaris wines. The results showed a lack of agreement among the wine experts regarding the typicality of Solaris wines. This, together with the results from the sensory evaluation, could suggest the possibility of different wine styles for Solaris wines. -

Why this success? Because it touched a raw nerve. And these balance advocates weren’t the first ones either. Cathy Corison has been practising balance at her Napa winery for nearly 30 years. Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat has been talking this language since the 1980s and is a bit miffed that the new flag-wavers are claiming the balance idea is all theirs, when he’s been banging the drum for 35 years. -
