Christian Karner School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Lincoln, Lincoln, UK Email: [email protected] Abstract The “Ibiza affair,” a succession of scandals triggered by undercover recordings of the FPÖ’s former head, Heinz-Christian Strache, in compromising discussions with a purported Russian oligarch’s niece has pro- foundly altered Austria’s political landscape and public debates. This article offers a historically contextual- https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms ized analysis of the multiple voices and competing truth claims articulated by diverse actors in the course of the scandal’s fallout. Empirically, this discussion offers a systematic analysis of political and media discourses focused on “Ibiza” between May 2019 and June 2020. Conceptually, the argument builds on Michel Foucault’s approach outlined in I, Pierre Rivière and its subsequent applications within nationalism studies. This analysis thus examines data through the questions as to who speaks about the event in question, how they do so, what is being claimed and disputed, and which political strategies and trajectories this enables. The com- peting, partly shifting positions revealed are the following: Strache’s initial regret that soon turned to a self- ascribed “victim-cum-martyr” status; the FPÖ’s distancing and eventual rupture from its long-standing Bundesparteiobmann; the Kronen Zeitung’s attempted ideological repositioning; the ÖVP’s need and oppor- tunity to shift its positions vis-à-vis its political competitors; and critical voices calling for far-reaching struc- tural changes.

Wir schafften es, traurigerweise, an die Weltspitze bei den COVID-19 Neuinfektionen im Verhältnis zur Einwohnerzahl! Der letzte Weltrekord begründete sich im Lebensalter unseres Bundeskanzlers, geb. 27. August 1986, also 34 Jahre alt! Weltweit gibt es keinen jüngeren Regierungschef! Im für Vergleiche üblichen sieben Tages Schnitt liegt Österreich mit 831 Neuinfektionen pro Million Einwohner vor Georgien, der Schweiz und Tschechien. Während die Schweiz und Tschechien ihre Neuinfektionen zuletzt einbremsen konnten, sind jene in Österreich seit Mitte Oktober ungebremst gestiegen und mündeten im November in Siebentausender-Zahlen pro Tag, bei 8,9 Millionen Einwohner!     Economic and Financial Analysis 26 June 2019 Austria: Business as usual Article Despite political chaos and external uncertainties, the Austrian economy remains on a solid growth path thanks to private consumption and gross fixed capital formation Source: Shutterstock Austrian Federal Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein Content - Austrian growth revised downwards - Once again, politics take the spotlight Austrian growth revised downwards First quarter growth in Austria came in at a solid 0.4% quarter on quarter, with domestic demand and investment in equipment and construction expanding nicely. However, exports and imports reflect a slowing dynamic, with the cooling world economy and Europe's industrial slowdown starting to leave its mark on the country. While we have revised down our growth forecasts, from 2.2% to 1.9% for this year, with risks skewed to the downside, overall the Austrian economy remains on a solid growth path with a robust labour market and persistently strong consumption. Once again, politics take the spotlight While the economy is running smoothly, the political scandal around the released tape of the ex-vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, showing him talking about public contracts for campaign-support, has led to the resignation of Strache, snap elections in September, the dismissal of FPÖ’s interior minister Herbert Kickl, the subsequent resignation of all FPÖ government members, and a successful motion of no confidence against Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and the ÖVP’s government members. An interim cabinet is now in charge until new elections in September, featuring Austria’s first female chancellor, Brigitte Bierlein. The current political uncertainty should not have any impact on the economy for the time being So far, the political mess seems to have benefited former Chancellor Kurz’ ÖVP, while it has left its mark on former junior coalition partner FPÖ, according to recent polls.

A sign of this reciprocal rudeness materialized shortly after the party’s inauguration, when a collection of former senior European leaders signed a letter urging current EU governments not to receive the six ministers of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) led by Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache. Among the signatories was former Canadian prime minister Kim Campbell. The letter, published in Le Monde, also called for the boycott of Austria’s EU presidency that is slated to commence in the second half of 2018. The result of this potential boycott leaves the Trudeau government in an awkward predicament: publicly voice disapproval, but risk igniting a diplomatic row.
